    Design of a 5 Degree of Freedom Kinematic Stage for the Dual Crystal Backlighter Imager Diagnostic

    The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is home to the world’s most energetic laser. The facility is one of the leading centers in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments to research and understand sustainable fusion energy. To fully document and understand the physics occurring during experiments, precise diagnostics are used for a wide range of purposes. One diagnostic, the crystal backlighter imager (CBI), allows for X-ray imaging of the target at late stages of its implosion. The aim of this project was to increase the current capabilities of the CBI diagnostic with the addition of a second crystal. This thesis focuses on the design development of the 5 degrees of freedom precision stages used to align each of the crystals. The motivations for the addition of a second crystal are covered in the introduction. A ray tracing model was generated to explore the required range of travel for both crystals, as well as explore potential effects of transitioning to a two-crystal system. The requirements of the precision stage are outlined based on the flaws of the current stage and areas with desired improvements. A dynamic analysis was performed on modified supporting hardware for CBI, to determine areas of interest in redesigning components for the two-crystal system. Further research is performed on commercial and literature methods used to design precision optomechanical stages. Finally, the design development is documented outlining the considered options, modifications to the existing system, and the proposed design solution.     The significance of passive acoustic array-configurations on sperm whale range estimation when using the hyperbolic algorithm

    In cetacean monitoring for population estimation, behavioural studies or mitigation, traditional visual observations are being augmented by the use of Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) techniques that use the creature’s vocalisations for localisation. The design of hydrophone configurations is evaluated for sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) range estimation to meet the requirements of the current mitigation regulations for a safety zone and behaviour research. This thesis uses the Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) of cetacean vocalisations with a three-dimensional hyperbolic localisation algorithm. A MATLAB simulator has been developed to model array-configurations and to assess their performance in source range estimation for both homogeneous and non-homogeneous sound speed profiles (SSP). The non-homogeneous medium is modelled on a Bellhop ray trace model, using data collected from the Gulf of Mexico. The sperm whale clicks are chosen as an exemplar of a distinctive underwater sound. The simulator is tested with a separate synthetic source generator which produced a set of TDOAs from a known source location. The performance in source range estimation for Square, Trapezium, Triangular, Shifted-pair and Y-shape geometries is tested. The Y-shape geometry, with four elements and aperture-length of 120m, is the most accurate, giving an error of ±10m over slant ranges of 500m in a homogeneous medium, and 300m in a non-homogeneous medium. However, for towed array deployments, the Y-shape array is sensitive to angle-positioning-error when the geometry is seriously distorted. The Shifted-pair geometry overcomes these limits, performing an initial accuracy of ±30m when the vessel either moves in a straight line or turns to port or starboard. It constitutes a recommendable array-configuration for towed array deployments. The thesis demonstrates that the number of receivers, the array-geometry and the arrayaperture are important parameters to consider when designing and deploying a hydrophone array. It is shown that certain array-configurations can significantly improve the accuracy of source range estimation. Recommendations are made concerning preferred array-configurations for use with PAM systems

    Replacement bearing for Rocketdyne SSME HPOTPs using alternate self-lubricating retainer materials

    Research was conducted to develop replacement bearings for the Rocketdyne Space Shuttle main engine (SSME) high pressure oxidizer turbopumps (HPOTPs). The replacement bearings consisted of standard balls and races with a special Battelle Self-Lubricating Insert Configuration (BASIC) retainer. The BASIC retainer consists of a phosphor bronze housing with inserts consisting of a polytetrafluoretheylene (PTFE) and bronze compound. The PTFE contacts the balls and the land guiding surface on the outer race. A PTFE transfer film is formed on balls and races, which lubricates the critical interfaces. The BASIC retainer is a one-to-one replacement for the current Armalon retainer, but has superior lubricating properties and is stronger over the broad temperature range anticipated for the HPOTP bearings.     Machine vision and the OMV

    The orbital Maneuvering Vehicle (OMV) is intended to close with orbiting targets for relocation or servicing. It will be controlled via video signals and thruster activation based upon Earth or space station directives. A human operator is squarely in the middle of the control loop for close work. Without directly addressing future, more autonomous versions of a remote servicer, several techniques that will doubtless be important in a future increase of autonomy also have some direct application to the current situation, particularly in the area of image enhancement and predictive analysis. Several techniques are presentet, and some few have been implemented, which support a machine vision capability proposed to be adequate for detection, recognition, and tracking. Once feasibly implemented, they must then be further modified to operate together in real time. This may be achieved by two courses, the use of an array processor and some initial steps toward data reduction. The methodology or adapting to a vector architecture is discussed in preliminary form, and a highly tentative rationale for data reduction at the front end is also discussed. As a by-product, a working implementation of the most advanced graphic display technique, ray-casting, is described

    From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline

    Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed, along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported features.
