Balance constants for Coxeter groups
The - Conjecture, originally formulated in 1968, is one of the
best-known open problems in the theory of posets, stating that the balance
constant (a quantity determined by the linear extensions) of any non-total
order is at least . By reinterpreting balance constants of posets in terms
of convex subsets of the symmetric group, we extend the study of balance
constants to convex subsets of any Coxeter group. Remarkably, we conjecture
that the lower bound of still applies in any finite Weyl group, with new
and interesting equality cases appearing.
We generalize several of the main results towards the - Conjecture
to this new setting: we prove our conjecture when is a weak order interval
below a fully commutative element in any acyclic Coxeter group (an
generalization of the case of width-two posets), we give a uniform lower bound
for balance constants in all finite Weyl groups using a new generalization of
order polytopes to this context, and we introduce generalized semiorders for
which we resolve the conjecture.
We hope this new perspective may shed light on the proper level of generality
in which to consider the - Conjecture, and therefore on which methods
are likely to be successful in resolving it.Comment: 27 page
Information-theoretic lower bounds for quantum sorting
We analyze the quantum query complexity of sorting under partial information.
In this problem, we are given a partially ordered set and are asked to
identify a linear extension of using pairwise comparisons. For the standard
sorting problem, in which is empty, it is known that the quantum query
complexity is not asymptotically smaller than the classical
information-theoretic lower bound. We prove that this holds for a wide class of
partially ordered sets, thereby improving on a result from Yao (STOC'04)
Counting magic squares in quasi-polynomial time
We present a randomized algorithm, which, given positive integers n and t and
a real number 0< epsilon <1, computes the number Sigma(n, t) of n x n
non-negative integer matrices (magic squares) with the row and column sums
equal to t within relative error epsilon. The computational complexity of the
algorithm is polynomial in 1/epsilon and quasi-polynomial in N=nt, that is, of
the order N^{log N}. A simplified version of the algorithm works in time
polynomial in 1/epsilon and N and estimates Sigma(n,t) within a factor of
N^{log N}. This simplified version has been implemented. We present results of
the implementation, state some conjectures, and discuss possible
generalizations.Comment: 30 page
A computational multi-scale approach for brittle materials
Materials of industrial interest often show a complex microstructure which directly influences their macroscopic material behavior. For simulations on the component scale, multi-scale methods may exploit this microstructural information. This work is devoted to a multi-scale approach for brittle materials. Based on a homogenization result for free discontinuity problems, we present FFT-based methods to compute the effective crack energy of heterogeneous materials with complex microstructures
Extensions of the Kahn--Saks inequality for posets of width two
The Kahn--Saks inequality is a classical result on the number of linear
extensions of finite posets. We give a new proof of this inequality for posets
of width two using explicit injections of lattice paths. As a consequence we
obtain a -analogue, a multivariate generalization and an equality condition
in this case. We also discuss the equality conditions of the Kahn--Saks
inequality for general posets and prove several implications between conditions
conjectured to be equivalent.Comment: 25 pages; v3: added conditions to Theorem 1.4 and 1.6, revised
Conjecture in Section 8, added example 1.

Milman.
We study a number of questions from Geometric Functional Analysis using
geometric, analytic and probabilistic methods.
1. Vector balancing problems. We obtain an improved version of a result of
D. Hajela concerning a well-known problem of Komlos. We also generalize
this result to independent random vectors that are uniformly distributed
in the Euclidean unit ball or an arbitrary symmetric convex body, and any
norm.
2. Weighted sums of log-concave random vectors. We obtain upper bounds for
the expected value of the norm of a weighted sum of independent random
vectors distributed according to a log-concave isotropic probability
measure, answering a question of V. Milman. We also present applications
to "randomized" versions of vector balancing problems.
3. Random convex sets. We study two classes of random convex sets and
provide upper and lower bounds for the expected value of their volume.
4. Affine quermassintegrals of random polytopes. We confirm, from an
asymptotic point of view, a related conjecture of Lutwak for some broad
classes of random polytopes.
5. The symmetric average and the MM*-inequality for isotropic convex
bodies. We discuss two known problems from asymptotic convex geometry. The
first problem asks for estimates on the symmetric average sav(K) of a
convex body K, while the second one concerns upper bounds for the mean
width and the mean norm of an isotropic convex body. We provide simpler
proofs for the best, up to now, known results
