Emotion research by the people, for the people
Emotion research will leap forward when its focus changes from comparing averaged statistics of self-report data across people experiencing emotion in laboratories to characterizing patterns of data from individuals and clusters of similar individuals experiencing emotion in real life. Such an advance will come about through engineers and psychologists collaborating to create new ways for people to measure, share, analyze, and learn from objective emotional responses in situations that truly matter to people. This approach has the power to greatly advance the science of emotion while also providing personalized help to participants in the research
06302 Abstracts Collection -- Aspects For Legacy Applications
From 26.07.06 to 29.07.06, the Dagstuhl Seminar 06302 ``Aspects For Legacy Applications\u27\u27 was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl.
During the seminar, several participants presented their current
research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of
the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of
seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. The first section
describes the seminar topics and goals in general.
Links to extended abstracts or full papers are provided, if available
CLOUD COMPUTING
Cloud Computing is a new technology that helps us to use the Cloud for compliance our computation needs. Cloud refers to a scalable network of computers that work together like Internet. An important element in Cloud Computing is that we shift processing, managing, storing and implementing our data from, locality into the Cloud; So it helps us to improve the efficiency. Because of it is new technology, it has both advantages and disadvantages that are scrutinized in this article. Then some vanguards of this technology are studied. Afterwards we find out that Cloud Computing will have important roles in our tomorrow life
Evaluating a Personal Stress Monitoring System
Now-a-days, Life is generally much more stressful than in the past. Stress is the word that we use when we feel that we are overloaded mentally in our thoughts and wonder whether we can really cope with those placed upon us. Sometimes, stress gets us going and they are good for us but at other times, it could be the cause to undermine both our mental and physical health. The way we respond to a challenge can be considered as a kind of stress. Part of our response to a challenge is physiological and affects our own physical state. When we are faced with a challenge or a threat, our body releases some resources to protect us against them - either to get away as fast as we can, or to fight against them. This fight-or-flight response is our body\u27s sympathetic nervous system reacting to a stressful event. During this response, our body produces larger quantities of the chemicals such as cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline, which triggers a higher heart rate, heightened muscle preparedness, sweating, and alertness. All these factors help us to protect ourselves in a dangerous or challenging situation. But based on the frequency of stress facing by a person, these changes may affect his or her health negatively. In order to evaluate an individual\u27s stress, I worked on this thesis in developing a personal stress monitoring system to capture the stress undergoing by an individual in his or her daily life
Robot Consciousness: Physics and Metaphysics Here and Abroad
Interest has been renewed in the study of consciousness, both theoretical and applied, following developments in 20th and early 21st-century logic, metamathematics, computer science, and the brain sciences. In this evolving narrative, I explore several theoretical questions about the types of artificial intelligence and offer several conjectures about how they affect possible future developments in this exceptionally transformative field of research. I also address the practical significance of the advances in artificial intelligence in view of the cautions issued by prominent scientists, politicians, and ethicists about the possible dangers of such sufficiently advanced general intelligence, including by implication the search for extraterrestrial intelligence
