    Piecewise Affine System Identification of a Hydraulic Wind Power Transfer System

    Hydraulic wind power transfer systems exhibit a highly nonlinear dynamic influenced by system actuator hysteresis and disturbances from wind speed and load torque. This paper presents a system identification approach to approximate such a nonlinear dynamic. Piecewise affine (PWA) models are obtained utilizing the averaged nonlinear models of hysteresis in a confined space. State-space representation of PWA models is obtained over the allocated operating point clusters. The experimental results demonstrate a close agreement with that of the simulated.     Dynamically Stable 3D Quadrupedal Walking with Multi-Domain Hybrid System Models and Virtual Constraint Controllers

    Hybrid systems theory has become a powerful approach for designing feedback controllers that achieve dynamically stable bipedal locomotion, both formally and in practice. This paper presents an analytical framework 1) to address multi-domain hybrid models of quadruped robots with high degrees of freedom, and 2) to systematically design nonlinear controllers that asymptotically stabilize periodic orbits of these sophisticated models. A family of parameterized virtual constraint controllers is proposed for continuous-time domains of quadruped locomotion to regulate holonomic and nonholonomic outputs. The properties of the Poincare return map for the full-order and closed-loop hybrid system are studied to investigate the asymptotic stabilization problem of dynamic gaits. An iterative optimization algorithm involving linear and bilinear matrix inequalities is then employed to choose stabilizing virtual constraint parameters. The paper numerically evaluates the analytical results on a simulation model of an advanced 3D quadruped robot, called GR Vision 60, with 36 state variables and 12 control inputs. An optimal amble gait of the robot is designed utilizing the FROST toolkit. The power of the analytical framework is finally illustrated through designing a set of stabilizing virtual constraint controllers with 180 controller parameters.Comment: American Control Conference 201

    Learning Image-Conditioned Dynamics Models for Control of Under-actuated Legged Millirobots

    Millirobots are a promising robotic platform for many applications due to their small size and low manufacturing costs. Legged millirobots, in particular, can provide increased mobility in complex environments and improved scaling of obstacles. However, controlling these small, highly dynamic, and underactuated legged systems is difficult. Hand-engineered controllers can sometimes control these legged millirobots, but they have difficulties with dynamic maneuvers and complex terrains. We present an approach for controlling a real-world legged millirobot that is based on learned neural network models. Using less than 17 minutes of data, our method can learn a predictive model of the robot's dynamics that can enable effective gaits to be synthesized on the fly for following user-specified waypoints on a given terrain. Furthermore, by leveraging expressive, high-capacity neural network models, our approach allows for these predictions to be directly conditioned on camera images, endowing the robot with the ability to predict how different terrains might affect its dynamics. This enables sample-efficient and effective learning for locomotion of a dynamic legged millirobot on various terrains, including gravel, turf, carpet, and styrofoam.     Hybrid modeling and control of mechatronic systems using a piecewise affine dynamics approach

    This thesis investigates the topic of modeling and control of PWA systems based on two experimental cases of an electrical and hydraulic nature with varying complexity that were also built, instrumented and evaluated. A full-order model has been created for both systems, including all dominant system dynamics and non-linearities. The unknown parameters and characteristics have been identi ed via an extensive parameter identi cation. In the following, the non-linear characteristics are linearized at several points, resulting in PWA models for each respective setup. Regarding the closed loop control of the generated models and corresponding experimental setups, a linear control structure comprised of integral error, feed-forward and state-feedback control has been used. Additionally, the hydraulic setup has been controlled in an autonomous hybrid position/force control mode, resulting in a switched system with each mode's dynamics being de ned by the previously derived PWA-based model in combination with the control structure and respective mode-dependent controller gains. The autonomous switch between control modes has been de ned by a switching event capable of consistently switching between modes in a deterministic manner despite the noise-a icted measurements. Several methods were used to obtain suitable controller gains, including optimization routines and pole placement. Validation of the system's fast and accurate response was obtained through simulations and experimental evaluation. The controlled system's local stability was proven for regions in state-space associated with operational points by using pole-zero analysis.     Task-Driven Hybrid Model Reduction for Dexterous Manipulation

    In contact-rich tasks, like dexterous manipulation, the hybrid nature of making and breaking contact creates challenges for model representation and control. For example, choosing and sequencing contact locations for in-hand manipulation, where there are thousands of potential hybrid modes, is not generally tractable. In this paper, we are inspired by the observation that far fewer modes are actually necessary to accomplish many tasks. Building on our prior work learning hybrid models, represented as linear complementarity systems, we find a reduced-order hybrid model requiring only a limited number of task-relevant modes. This simplified representation, in combination with model predictive control, enables real-time control yet is sufficient for achieving high performance. We demonstrate the proposed method first on synthetic hybrid systems, reducing the mode count by multiple orders of magnitude while achieving task performance loss of less than 5%. We also apply the proposed method to a three-fingered robotic hand manipulating a previously unknown object. With no prior knowledge, we achieve state-of-the-art closed-loop performance within a few minutes of online learning, by collecting only a few thousand environment samples.Comment: Reproducing code: https://github.com/wanxinjin/Task-Driven-Hybrid-Reduction.     Formal methods for resilient control

    Many systems operate in uncertain, possibly adversarial environments, and their successful operation is contingent upon satisfying specific requirements, optimal performance, and ability to recover from unexpected situations. Examples are prevalent in many engineering disciplines such as transportation, robotics, energy, and biological systems. This thesis studies designing correct, resilient, and optimal controllers for discrete-time complex systems from elaborate, possibly vague, specifications. The first part of the contributions of this thesis is a framework for optimal control of non-deterministic hybrid systems from specifications described by signal temporal logic (STL), which can express a broad spectrum of interesting properties. The method is optimization-based and has several advantages over the existing techniques. When satisfying the specification is impossible, the degree of violation - characterized by STL quantitative semantics - is minimized. The computational limitations are discussed. The focus of second part is on specific types of systems and specifications for which controllers are synthesized efficiently. A class of monotone systems is introduced for which formal synthesis is scalable and almost complete. It is shown that hybrid macroscopic traffic models fall into this class. Novel techniques in modular verification and synthesis are employed for distributed optimal control, and their usefulness is shown for large-scale traffic management. Apart from monotone systems, a method is introduced for robust constrained control of networked linear systems with communication constraints. Case studies on longitudinal control of vehicular platoons are presented. The third part is about learning-based control with formal guarantees. Two approaches are studied. First, a formal perspective on adaptive control is provided in which the model is represented by a parametric transition system, and the specification is captured by an automaton. A correct-by-construction framework is developed such that the controller infers the actual parameters and plans accordingly for all possible future transitions and inferences. The second approach is based on hybrid model identification using input-output data. By assuming some limited knowledge of the range of system behaviors, theoretical performance guarantees are provided on implementing the controller designed for the identified model on the original unknown system
