    Automatic generation of robot and manual assembly plans using octrees

    This paper aims to investigate automatic assembly planning for robot and manual assembly. The octree decomposition technique is applied to approximate CAD models with an octree representation which are then used to generate robot and manual assembly plans. An assembly planning system able to generate assembly plans was developed to build these prototype models. Octree decomposition is an effective assembly planning tool. Assembly plans can automatically be generated for robot and manual assembly using octree models. Research limitations/implications - One disadvantage of the octree decomposition technique is that it approximates a part model with cubes instead of using the actual model. This limits its use and applications when complex assemblies must be planned, but in the context of prototyping can allow a rough component to be formed which can later be finished by hand. Assembly plans can be generated using octree decomposition, however, new algorithms must be developed to overcome its limitations

    Geometric path planning without maneuvers for nonholonomic parallel orienting robots

    Current geometric path planners for nonholonomic parallel orienting robots generate maneuvers consisting of a sequence of moves connected by zero-velocity points. The need for these maneuvers restrains the use of this kind of parallel robots to few applications. Based on a rather old result on linear time-varying systems, this letter shows that there are infinitely differentiable paths connecting two arbitrary points in SO(3) such that the instantaneous axis of rotation along the path rest on a fixed plane. This theoretical result leads to a practical path planner for nonholonomic parallel orienting robots that generates single-move maneuvers. To present this result, we start with a path planner based on three-move maneuvers, and then we proceed by progressively reducing the number of moves to one, thus providing a unified treatment with respect to previous geometric path planners.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Automated sequence and motion planning for robotic spatial extrusion of 3D trusses

    While robotic spatial extrusion has demonstrated a new and efficient means to fabricate 3D truss structures in architectural scale, a major challenge remains in automatically planning extrusion sequence and robotic motion for trusses with unconstrained topologies. This paper presents the first attempt in the field to rigorously formulate the extrusion sequence and motion planning (SAMP) problem, using a CSP encoding. Furthermore, this research proposes a new hierarchical planning framework to solve the extrusion SAMP problems that usually have a long planning horizon and 3D configuration complexity. By decoupling sequence and motion planning, the planning framework is able to efficiently solve the extrusion sequence, end-effector poses, joint configurations, and transition trajectories for spatial trusses with nonstandard topologies. This paper also presents the first detailed computation data to reveal the runtime bottleneck on solving SAMP problems, which provides insight and comparing baseline for future algorithmic development. Together with the algorithmic results, this paper also presents an open-source and modularized software implementation called Choreo that is machine-agnostic. To demonstrate the power of this algorithmic framework, three case studies, including real fabrication and simulation results, are presented.Comment: 24 pages, 16 figure

    Cooperative Carrying Control for Mobile Robots in Indoor Scenario

    openIn recent years, there has been a growing interest in designing multi-robot systems to provide cost-effective, fault-tolerant and reliable solutions to a variety of automated applications. In particular, from an industrial perspective, cooperative carrying techniques based on Reinforcement Learning (RL) gained a strong interest. Compared to a single robot system, this approach improves the system’s robustness and manipulation dexterity in the transportation of large objects. However, in the current state of the art, the environments’ dynamism and re-training procedure represent a considerable limitation for most of the existing cooperative carrying RL-based solutions. In this thesis, we employ the Value Propagation Networks (VPN) algorithm for cooperative multi-robot transport scenarios. We extend and test the Delta-Q cooperation metric to V-value-based agents, and we investigate path generation algorithms and trajectory tracking controllers for differential drive robots. Moreover, we explore localization algorithms in order to take advantage of range sensors and mitigate the drift errors of wheel odometry, and we conduct experiments to derive key performance indicators of range sensors' precision. Lastly, we perform realistic industrial indoor simulations using Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo 3D visualization tool, including physical objects and 6G communication constraints. Our results showed that the proposed VPN-based algorithm outperforms the current state-of-the-art since the trajectory planning and dynamic obstacle avoidance are performed in real-time, without re-training the model, and under constant 6G network coverage.In recent years, there has been a growing interest in designing multi-robot systems to provide cost-effective, fault-tolerant and reliable solutions to a variety of automated applications.
