Volumetric Lung Nodule Segmentation using Adaptive ROI with Multi-View Residual Learning
Accurate quantification of pulmonary nodules can greatly assist the early
diagnosis of lung cancer, which can enhance patient survival possibilities. A
number of nodule segmentation techniques have been proposed, however, all of
the existing techniques rely on radiologist 3-D volume of interest (VOI) input
or use the constant region of interest (ROI) and only investigate the presence
of nodule voxels within the given VOI. Such approaches restrain the solutions
to investigate the nodule presence outside the given VOI and also include the
redundant structures into VOI, which may lead to inaccurate nodule
segmentation. In this work, a novel semi-automated approach for 3-D
segmentation of nodule in volumetric computerized tomography (CT) lung scans
has been proposed. The proposed technique can be segregated into two stages, at
the first stage, it takes a 2-D ROI containing the nodule as input and it
performs patch-wise investigation along the axial axis with a novel adaptive
ROI strategy. The adaptive ROI algorithm enables the solution to dynamically
select the ROI for the surrounding slices to investigate the presence of nodule
using deep residual U-Net architecture. The first stage provides the initial
estimation of nodule which is further utilized to extract the VOI. At the
second stage, the extracted VOI is further investigated along the coronal and
sagittal axis with two different networks and finally, all the estimated masks
are fed into the consensus module to produce the final volumetric segmentation
of nodule. The proposed approach has been rigorously evaluated on the LIDC
dataset, which is the largest publicly available dataset. The result suggests
that the approach is significantly robust and accurate as compared to the
previous state of the art techniques.Comment: The manuscript is currently under review and copyright shall be

The U-Net-based Active Learning Framework for Enhancing Cancer Immunotherapy
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the world. According to the U.S. Breast Cancer Statistics, about 281,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in 2021 (Smith et al., 2019). The death rate of breast cancer is higher than any other cancer type. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer have been challenging over the last few decades. Meanwhile, deep learning algorithms using Convolutional Neural Networks to segment images have achieved considerable success in recent years. These algorithms have continued to assist in exploring the quantitative measurement of cancer cells in the tumor microenvironment. However, detecting cancerous regions in whole-slide images has been challenging as it requires substantial annotation and training efforts from clinicians and biologists. In this thesis, a notable instructing process named U-Net-based Active Learning is proposed to improve the annotation and training procedure in a feedback learning process by utilizing a Deep Convolutional Neural Networks model. The proposed approach reduces the amount of time and effort required to analyze the whole slide images. During the Active Learning process, highly uncertain samples are iteratively selected to strategically supply characteristics of the whole slide images to the training process using a low-confidence sample selection algorithm. The performance results of the proposed approach indicated that the U-Net-based Active Learning framework has promising outcomes in the feedback learning process as it reaches 88.71% AUC-ROC when only using 64 image patches, while random lymphocyte prediction reaches 84.12% AUC-ROC at maximum
Detection and classification of brain tumours from MRI images using faster R-CNN
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a useful method for diagnosis of tumours in human brain. In this work, MRI images have been analysed to detect the regions containing tumour and classify these regions into three different tumour categories: meningioma, glioma, and pituitary. Deep learning is a relatively recent and powerful method for image classification tasks. Therefore, faster Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks (faster R-CNN), a deep learning method, has been utilized and implemented via TensorFlow library in this study. A publicly available dataset containing 3,064 MRI brain images (708 meningioma, 1426 glioma, 930 pituitary) of 233 patients has been used for training and testing of the classifier. It has been shown that faster R-CNN method can yield an accuracy of 91.66% which is higher than the related work using the same dataset
Application of deep learning technique to manage COVID-19 in routine clinical practice using CT images: Results of 10 convolutional neural networks
Fast diagnostic methods can control and prevent the spread of pandemic diseases like coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and assist physicians to better manage patients in high workload conditions. Although a laboratory test is the current routine diagnostic tool, it is time-consuming, imposing a high cost and requiring a well-equipped laboratory for analysis. Computed tomography (CT) has thus far become a fast method to diagnose patients with COVID-19. However, the performance of radiologists in diagnosis of COVID-19 was moderate. Accordingly, additional investigations are needed to improve the performance in diagnosing COVID-19. In this study is suggested a rapid and valid method for COVID-19 diagnosis using an artificial intelligence technique based. 1020 CT slices from 108 patients with laboratory proven COVID-19 (the COVID-19 group) and 86 patients with other atypical and viral pneumonia diseases (the non-COVID-19 group) were included. Ten well-known convolutional neural networks were used to distinguish infection of COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 groups: AlexNet, VGG-16, VGG-19, SqueezeNet, GoogleNet, MobileNet-V2, ResNet-18, ResNet-50, ResNet-101, and Xception. Among all networks, the best performance was achieved by ResNet-101 and Xception. ResNet-101 could distinguish COVID-19 from non-COVID-19 cases with an AUC of 0.994 (sensitivity, 100; specificity, 99.02; accuracy, 99.51). Xception achieved an AUC of 0.994 (sensitivity, 98.04; specificity, 100; accuracy, 99.02). However, the performance of the radiologist was moderate with an AUC of 0.873 (sensitivity, 89.21; specificity, 83.33; accuracy, 86.27). ResNet-101 can be considered as a high sensitivity model to characterize and diagnose COVID-19 infections, and can be used as an adjuvant tool in radiology departments. © 2020 Elsevier Lt
