Model-Based Performance Anticipation in Multi-tier Autonomic Systems: Methodology and Experiments

Our goal is to introduce performance prediction of a possible target configuration when a self-* feature is planning a system reconfiguration. We propose a global and partially automated process based on queues and queuing networks modelling. This process includes decomposing a distributed application into black boxes, identifying the queue model for each black box and assembling these models into a queuing network according to the candidate target configuration. Finally, performance prediction is performed either through simulation or analysis. This paper sketches the global process and focuses on the black box model identification step. This step is automated thanks to a load testing platform enhanced with a workload control loop. Model identification is based on statistical tests. The identified models are then used in performance prediction of autonomic system configurations. This paper describes the whole process through a practical experiment with a multi-tier application

Report from GI-Dagstuhl Seminar 16394: Software Performance Engineering in the DevOps World
This report documents the program and the outcomes of GI-Dagstuhl Seminar
16394 "Software Performance Engineering in the DevOps World".
The seminar addressed the problem of performance-aware DevOps. Both, DevOps
and performance engineering have been growing trends over the past one to two
years, in no small part due to the rise in importance of identifying
performance anomalies in the operations (Ops) of cloud and big data systems and
feeding these back to the development (Dev). However, so far, the research
community has treated software engineering, performance engineering, and cloud
computing mostly as individual research areas. We aimed to identify
cross-community collaboration, and to set the path for long-lasting
collaborations towards performance-aware DevOps.
The main goal of the seminar was to bring together young researchers (PhD
students in a later stage of their PhD, as well as PostDocs or Junior
Professors) in the areas of (i) software engineering, (ii) performance
engineering, and (iii) cloud computing and big data to present their current
research projects, to exchange experience and expertise, to discuss research
challenges, and to develop ideas for future collaborations
DiPerF: an automated DIstributed PERformance testing Framework
We present DiPerF, a distributed performance testing framework, aimed at
simplifying and automating service performance evaluation. DiPerF coordinates a
pool of machines that test a target service, collects and aggregates
performance metrics, and generates performance statistics. The aggregate data
collected provide information on service throughput, on service "fairness" when
serving multiple clients concurrently, and on the impact of network latency on
service performance. Furthermore, using this data, it is possible to build
predictive models that estimate a service performance given the service load.
We have tested DiPerF on 100+ machines on two testbeds, Grid3 and PlanetLab,
and explored the performance of job submission services (pre WS GRAM and WS

Automation of isogeometric formulation and efficiency consideration
This paper deals with automation of the isogeometric finite element formulation. Isogeometric finite element is implemented in AceGen environment, which enables symbolic formulation of the element code and the expressions are automatically opti- mized. The automated code is tested for objectivity regarding numerical efficiency in a numeric test with the Cooke membrane. This test shows that automatic code generation optimizes the isogeometric quadrilateral element with linear Bezier splines to the degree of only twelve percent overhead against standard displacement quadrilateral element of four nodes. Additionaly, the automated isogeometric element code is tested on a set of standard benchmark test cases to further test the accurancy and efficiency of the pre- sented isogeometric implementation. The isogeometric displacement brick element with quadratic Bezier splines is in all tests compared to a collection of standard displacement element formulations and a
selection of EAS elements. The presented results show su- perior behaviour of the isogeometric displacement brick element with quadratic Bezier splines for coarse meshes and best convergence rate with mesh refinement in most test cases. Despite all optimization of the element code the biggest disadvantage of the isogeo- metric model remains the time cost of the isogeometric analysis. Thus, when considering the ratio between solution error and solution time, the use of stable EAS elements, likeTSCG12, remains preferable

This paper deals with testing of applications based on the principles of cloud computing. It is aimed to describe options of testing business software in clouds (cloud testing). It identifies the needs for cloud testing tools including multi-layer testing; service level agreement (SLA) based testing, large scale simulation, and on-demand test environment. In a cloud-based model, ICT services are distributed and accessed over networks such as intranet or internet, which offer large data centers deliver on demand,
resources as a service, eliminating the need for investments in specific hardware, software, or on data center infrastructure. Businesses can apply those new technologies in the contest of intellectual capital management to lower the cost and increase competitiveness and also earnings. Based on comparison of the testing tools and techniques, the paper further investigates future trend of cloud based testing tools research and development. It is also important to say that this comparison and classification of testing tools describes a new area and it has not yet been done
