Apsines and Pseudo-Apsines (Attribution of Greek rhetorical treatises)

    Get PDF
Citations of Apsines by name in the treatise transmitted under his name are inconsistent with the traditional attribution. Editors remove the problem by treating these citations as interpolations, but there is no text-critical warrant for this. Since rhetorical technical texts were often misattributed, and there is no compelling internal or external evidence to support the traditional attribution, the traditional attribution should be abandoned. It is then possible to accept that Apsines was the author of [Hermogenes] On Invention, sometimes cited under his name. A number of testimonia can be explained on the assumption that [Apsines] was a pupil of Apsines named Aspasius, perhaps Aspasius of Tyre. Internal evidence is consistent with this conclusion

    Longinus On Sublimity

    Get PDF
The traditional attribution of On Sublimity to the third-century critic Cassius Longinus has been rejected by most scholars since the early nineteenth century. The arguments against a third-century date are examined and shown to be unfounded. It is argued that the interest in sublimity and a number of aspects of the treatise’s vocabulary show distinctive points of contact with the evidence for Cassius Longinus, and with authors influenced by him. There is therefore a balance of probability in favour of the traditional attribution

Simple and efficient classification scheme based on specific vocabulary

Assuming a binomial distribution for word occurrence, we propose computing a standardized Z score to define the specific vocabulary of a subset compared to that of the entire corpus. This approach is applied to weight terms (character n-gram, word, stem, lemma or sequence of them) which characterize a document. We then show how these Z score values can be used to derive a simple and efficient categorization scheme. To evaluate this proposition and demonstrate its effectiveness, we develop two experiments. First, the system must categorize speeches given by B. Obama as being either electoral or presidential speech. In a second experiment, sentences are extracted from these speeches and then categorized under the headings electoral or presidential. Based on these evaluations, the proposed classification scheme tends to perform better than a support vector machine model for both experiments, on the one hand, and on the other, shows a better performance level than a Naïve Bayes classifier on the first test and a slightly lower performance on the second (10-fold cross validation

Citations of \u27noster\u27 John Pecham in Richard Fleming\u27s Trinity Sunday sermon: evidence for the political use of liturgical music at the Council of Constance

This article examines a sermon for Trinity Sunday that was delivered by Richard Fleming at the Council of Constance in 1417. The author argues that Fleming’s citation of liturgical chant and a homily composed by John Pecham, together with certain external evidence, suggests that he was trying to bolster the reputation of the English Church in order to counter attempts to deprive the English delegation of its status as a ‘nation’ within the council. As such, it constitutes an interesting confluence of pulpit oratory, liturgical music, and ecclesiastical politics at this council

Text Analytics – An analysis of Political Media: Technical Report

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research project is to delve into political media and gain an insight into how politicians use text to communicate with their audience. Politics is a driving force in the world; they use power of persuasion, mass media and influence to gain supporters. The way that politicians do this is through their speeches and other modes of texts. The goal of this project is to use different text analytics tools to explore the domain of political media. Using NLP, analysis will be conducted to determine sentimentality tone, personality insights, similarity of politicians, how audience react and which buzzwords are used as form of influence. Analysis was conducted on presidential speeches and twitter as a source of political debate. An analysis of the emotional tone and psychological factors gathered from a politician’s text allow us to see how they apply influence in their media. Sentiment analysis from Twitter shows how powerful the micro blogging platform is as a means of influencing political factors. The steps of this project are discussed in detail through applying the KDD methodology along with suggestions for further work

Presbyterian Imitation Practices in Zachary Boyd’s Nebuchadnezzars Fierie Furnace

The university administrator, preacher and poet Zachary Boyd (1585–1653) relied heavily on epithets and similes borrowed from Josuah Sylvester's poetry when composing his scriptural versifications Zion's Flowers(c. 1640?). The composition of Boyd's adaptation of Daniel 3, Nebuchadnezzars Fierie Furnace, provides an unusually lucid example of the reading and imitation practices of a mid-seventeenth-century Scottish Presbyterian in the years preceding civil war. This article begins by re-considering a manuscript transcription of Fierie Furnace held at the British Library previously described as an anonymous playtext from the early 1610s, then establishes the nature of Boyd's reliance on Sylvester by analyzing holograph manuscripts held at Glasgow University Library, a sermon Boyd wrote on the same theme, and the copy of Sylvester's Devine Weekes, and Workes that Boyd probably used.Arts and Humanities Research Counci

In our paper we present a corpus of transcribed Lithuanian parliamentary speeches. The corpus is prepared in a specific format, appropriate for different authorship identification tasks. The corpus consists of approximately 111 thousand texts (24 million words). Each text matches one parliamentary speech produced during an ordinary session from the period of 7 parliamentary terms starting on March 10, 1990 and ending on December 23, 2013. The texts are grouped into 147 categories corresponding to individual authors, therefore they can be used for authorship attribution tasks; besides, these texts are also grouped according to age, gender and political views, therefore they are also suitable for author profiling tasks. Whereas short texts complicate recognition of author speaking style and are ambiguous in relation to the style of other authors, we incorporated only texts containing not less than 100 words into the corpus. In order to make each category as comprehensive and representative as possible, we included only those authors, who produced speeches at least 200 times. All the texts are lemmatized, morphologically and syntactically annotated, tokenized into the character n-grams. The statistical information of the corpus is also available. We have also demonstrated that the created corpus can be effectively used in authorship attribution and author profiling tasks with supervised machine learning methods. The corpus structure also allows using it with unsupervised machine learning methods and can be used for creation of rule-based methods, as well as in different linguistic analyses.
