LMS Adaptive Filters for Noise Cancellation: A Review

    Get PDF
This paper reviews the past and the recent research on Adaptive Filter algorithms based on adaptive noise cancellation systems. In many applications of noise cancellation, the change in signal characteristics could be quite fast which requires the utilization of adaptive algorithms that converge rapidly. Algorithms such as LMS and RLS proves to be vital in the noise cancellation are reviewed including principle and recent modifications to increase the convergence rate and reduce the computational complexity for future implementation. The purpose of this paper is not only to discuss various noise cancellation LMS algorithms but also to provide the reader with an overview of the research conducted

Accelerometry-Based Estimation of Respiratory Rate for Post-Intensive Care Patient Monitoring

This paper evaluates the use of accelerometers for continuous monitoring of respiratory rate (RR), which is an important vital sign in post-intensive care patients or those inside the intensive care unit (ICU). The respiratory rate can be estimated from accelerometer and photoplethysmography (PPG) signals for patients following ICU discharge. Due to sensor faults, sensor detachment, and various artifacts arising from motion, RR estimates derived from accelerometry and PPG may not be sufficiently reliable for use with existing algorithms. This paper described a case study of 10 selected patients, for which fewer RR estimates have been obtained from PPG signals in comparison to those from accelerometry. We describe an algorithm for which we show a maximum mean absolute error between estimates derived from PPG and accelerometer of 2.56 breaths/min. Our results obtained using the 10 selected patients are highly promising for estimation of RR from accelerometers, where significant agreements have been observed with the PPG-based RR estimates in many segments and across various patients. We present this research as a step towards producing reliable RR monitoring systems using low-cost mobile accelerometers for monitoring patients inside the ICU or on the ward (post-ICU)

[[abstract]]For a vehicular hands-free communication system, the sound quality of communication is usually degraded by noise which is known to be detrimental to system performance. In this paper, a novel adaptive filtering algorithm and an integrated system for acoustic echo and noise cancellation are presented. The proposed system includes adaptive noise cancellation, line enhancer, and echo cancellation which are based on a variable step-size affine-projection algorithm (VSS APA). The proposed VSS APA filtering algorithm is a combination of a variable step-size least-mean-square (VSS LMS) and an affine-projection algorithm (APA). The matrix of the APA allows more accurate, thorough input data and transforms the data into the structure of orthogonality, thus making the estimate of the weight vector faster and more accurate. To understand and verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, performance evaluation and comparison were conducted to compare the proposed algorithm and various traditional adaptive filtering algorithms in this application. The results demonstrated that the VSS APA has an effective performance and convergence in sound quality improvement of hands-free communication systems
