Distributed Formal Concept Analysis Algorithms Based on an Iterative MapReduce Framework
While many existing formal concept analysis algorithms are efficient, they
are typically unsuitable for distributed implementation. Taking the MapReduce
(MR) framework as our inspiration we introduce a distributed approach for
performing formal concept mining. Our method has its novelty in that we use a
light-weight MapReduce runtime called Twister which is better suited to
iterative algorithms than recent distributed approaches. First, we describe the
theoretical foundations underpinning our distributed formal concept analysis
approach. Second, we provide a representative exemplar of how a classic
centralized algorithm can be implemented in a distributed fashion using our
methodology: we modify Ganter's classic algorithm by introducing a family of
MR* algorithms, namely MRGanter and MRGanter+ where the prefix denotes the
algorithm's lineage. To evaluate the factors that impact distributed algorithm
performance, we compare our MR* algorithms with the state-of-the-art.
Experiments conducted on real datasets demonstrate that MRGanter+ is efficient,

In the present monograph, we will deal with questions of lexical typology in the nominal domain. By the term "lexical typology in the nominal domain", we refer to crosslinguistic regularities in the interaction between (a) those areas of the lexicon whose elements are capable of being used in the construction of "referring phrases" or "terms" and (b) the grammatical patterns in which these elements are involved. In the traditional analyses of a language such as English, such phrases are called "nominal phrases". In the study of the lexical aspects of the relevant domain, however, we will not confine ourselves to the investigation of "nouns" and "pronouns" but intend to take into consideration all those parts of speech which systematically alternate with nouns, either as heads or as modifiers of nominal phrases. In particular, this holds true for adjectives both in English and in other Standard European Languages. It is well known that adjectives are often difficult to distinguish from nouns, or that elements with an overt adjectival marker are used interchangeably with nouns, especially in particular semantic fields such as those denoting MATERIALS or NATlONALlTIES. That is, throughout this work the expression "lexical typology in the nominal domain" should not be interpreted as "a typology of nouns", but, rather, as the cross-linguistic investigation of lexical areas constitutive for "referring phrases" irrespective of how the parts-of-speech system in a specific language is defined
Describing typeforms: a designer's response
The paper sets out an overview of a pragmatic research investigation initiated within a doctoral enquiry, and which continues to inform design practice and pedagogy. Located within the fields of typography and information design, and very much concerned with design history, enquiry emphasized exploration of alternative design research methodologies in the production of a design outcome loaded with pedagogical ambition.
The issue being addressed within the investigation was the limited scope of existing typeface classificatory systems to adequately describe the diversity of forms represented within current type design practice and thus, recent acquisitions to an established teaching collection in London.
Addressing this issue unexpectedly came to utilize the researcherâs own design practice as a methodology for managing emergent enquiry, and for organizing and generating new knowledge through the employment of visual information management methods.
A primary outcome of the enquiry was a new framework for the description of typeforms. This new framework will be described in terms of its operation, divergence from existing models and potential for application

Human-Centered Approaches in Geovisualization Design: Investigating Multiple Methods Through a Long-Term Case Study
Working with three domain specialists we investigate human-centered approaches to geovisualization following an
ISO13407 taxonomy covering context of use, requirements and early stages of design. Our case study, undertaken over three years, draws attention to repeating trends: that generic approaches fail to elicit adequate requirements for geovis application design; that the use of real data is key to understanding needs and possibilities; that trust and knowledge must be built and developed with collaborators. These processes take time but modified human-centred approaches can be effective. A scenario developed through contextual inquiry but supplemented with domain data and graphics is useful to geovis designers. Wireframe, paper and digital prototypes enable successful communication between specialist and geovis domains when incorporating real and interesting data, prompting exploratory behaviour and eliciting previously unconsidered requirements. Paper prototypes are particularly successful at eliciting suggestions, especially for novel visualization. Enabling specialists to explore their data freely with a digital prototype is as effective as using a structured task protocol and is easier to administer. Autoethnography has potential for framing the design process. We conclude that a common understanding of context of use, domain data and visualization possibilities are essential to successful geovis design and develop as this progresses. HC approaches can make a significant contribution here. However, modified approaches, applied with flexibility, are most promising. We advise early, collaborative engagement with data â through simple, transient visual artefacts supported by data sketches and existing designs â before moving to successively more sophisticated data wireframes and data prototypes
About the nature of Kansei information, from abstract to concrete
Designerâs expertise refers to the scientific fields of emotional design and kansei information. This paper aims to answer to a scientific major issue which is, how to formalize designerâs knowledge, rules, skills into kansei information systems. Kansei can be considered as a psycho-physiologic, perceptive, cognitive and affective process through a particular experience. Kansei oriented methods include various approaches which deal with semantics and emotions, and show the correlation with some design properties. Kansei words may include semantic, sensory, emotional descriptors, and also objects names and product attributes. Kansei levels of information can be seen on an axis going from abstract to concrete dimensions. Sociological value is the most abstract information positioned on this axis. Previous studies demonstrate the values the people aspire to drive their emotional reactions in front of particular semantics. This means that the value dimension should be considered in kansei studies. Through a chain of value-function-product attributes it is possible to enrich design generation and design evaluation processes. This paper describes some knowledge structures and formalisms we established according to this chain, which can be further used for implementing computer aided design tools dedicated to early design. These structures open to new formalisms which enable to integrate design information in a non-hierarchical way. The foreseen algorithmic implementation may be based on the association of ontologies and bag-of-words.AN
Conflict Detection for Edits on Extended Feature Models using Symbolic Graph Transformation
Feature models are used to specify variability of user-configurable systems
as appearing, e.g., in software product lines. Software product lines are
supposed to be long-living and, therefore, have to continuously evolve over
time to meet ever-changing requirements. Evolution imposes changes to feature
models in terms of edit operations. Ensuring consistency of concurrent edits
requires appropriate conflict detection techniques. However, recent approaches
fail to handle crucial subtleties of extended feature models, namely
constraints mixing feature-tree patterns with first-order logic formulas over
non-Boolean feature attributes with potentially infinite value domains. In this
paper, we propose a novel conflict detection approach based on symbolic graph
transformation to facilitate concurrent edits on extended feature models. We
describe extended feature models formally with symbolic graphs and edit
operations with symbolic graph transformation rules combining graph patterns
with first-order logic formulas. The approach is implemented by combining
