    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to describe media ideology and construct media independence in the 2019 political year. Ideology has a major influence on the determination of media content. It is as if the general election democracy party cannot be separated from the mass media, so that the reporting of events "attacking each other" by the candidate pair cannot be avoided in the general election contestation. The object of the study was Kompas.com reporting on time limitations during the 2019 presidential and vice presidential election campaign. The research method used was qualitative library research. Data collection techniques using documentation. The results showed that the challenge of media ideology in maintaining the independence of media coverage in the political year must use the principles of independence. They are the presence or absence of opinion, personalization, sensation, stereotype, linkage, and accuracy in reporting

Women of the Civil War : the denial of gender assumptions

David W. Levy Prize finalist, Fall 2016A female nurse by the name of Kate Cummings described the following scene in her diary that she had witnessed when she served on a battlefield: "Gray-haired men--men in the pride of manhood--beardless boys...mutilated in every imaginable way, lying on the floor...so close together that it was almost impossible to walk without stepping on them...." The Civil War was an ugly conflict of violence and brutality between citizens on American soil. Historically, battle scenes depicted brave, fallen male soldiers, heavy artillery fire, gruesome conditions, and fellow countrymen attacking each other. Shockingly, not only did brother fight brother, but sister fought sister. Women during the Civil War found various ways to play crucial roles both on and off the battlefield, and the works written by these fearless women reveal the jobs they undertook, despite socially understood "rules" that told them to do otherwise. By taking on roles predominately held by men, the female population defied the laws of sexism and ultimately scrambled pre-existing gender roles during the Civil War era.undergraduat

Pergumulan Adat dan Agama (Nikah Sasusuku di Minangkabau dalam Novel Salah Pilih Karya Noer Sutan Iskandar)

The paradoxical Minangkabau custom makes it a unique thing, the dualism of the power of syarak and adat seems to be able to go hand in hand as sounded in the traditional philosophy, adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi kitabullah. But in reality both are vulnerable to attacking each other because adat and syarak have different perspectives in many ways, these differences carve a history of painful civil war in the Minangkabau (Paderi Movement). The majority of the Minangkabau people view syarak and adat as possible, as if hypnotized by the traditional philosophy that is upheld, this article tries to reveal that the battle of adat and religion still occurs today. It is seen from the marriage case that the entries in the novel were wrongly chosen by Noer Sutan iskandar which was contrary to adat but not according to religion. The technique of collecting data is done by literature studies and interviews, the results are astounding. Criticisms with the theme of un-customary customs and religion have been going on for a long time, even many massive literary works have raised the theme, until now with different epochs of life. religion is never over

A nerve lemma for gluing together incoherent discrete Morse functions

Two of the most useful tools in topological combinatorics are the nerve lemma and discrete Morse theory. In this note we introduce a theorem that interpolates between them and allows decompositions of complexes into non-contractible pieces as long as discrete Morse theory ensures that they behave well enough. The proof is based on diagrams of spaces, but that theory is not needed for the formulation or applications of the theorem.Comment: 4 page

Linguistic Harbingers of Betrayal: A Case Study on an Online Strategy Game

Interpersonal relations are fickle, with close friendships often dissolving into enmity. In this work, we explore linguistic cues that presage such transitions by studying dyadic interactions in an online strategy game where players form alliances and break those alliances through betrayal. We characterize friendships that are unlikely to last and examine temporal patterns that foretell betrayal. We reveal that subtle signs of imminent betrayal are encoded in the conversational patterns of the dyad, even if the victim is not aware of the relationship's fate. In particular, we find that lasting friendships exhibit a form of balance that manifests itself through language. In contrast, sudden changes in the balance of certain conversational attributes---such as positive sentiment, politeness, or focus on future planning---signal impending betrayal.Comment: To appear at ACL 2015. 10pp, 4 fig. Enforcing Civility: Holding Attorneys to a Higher Standard of Conduct

    Get PDF
As there continue to be incidents of attorneys slapping opposing counsel at depositions, attorneys personally attacking each other during litigation (including in one case disparaging remarks about an attorneyā€™s alleged lack of parenting ability), and numerous other rude and disrespectful behavior by attorneys, incivility remains a pervasive problem in the legal profession. The response thus far to incivility by the legal profession includes voluntary civility codes and calls for professionalism. These responses fail to address the systemic issue of incivility in the legal profession. As a result, several states added civility to their oaths of admission, while several jurisdictions took the final step by making civility mandatory. This article discusses how civility can be enforced, as well as the benefits of mandatory civility and the purported disadvantages of mandatory civility. This article concludes that state bars should make civility mandatory and hold attorneys to a higher standard of conduct. As the former United States Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day Oā€™Connor said, ā€œMore civility and greater professionalism can only enhance the pleasure lawyers find in practice, increase the effectiveness of our system of justice, and improve the publicā€™s perception of lawyers.

In this paper we tackle the crisis of political trust and public engagement with politics by investigating new methods and tools to watch and take part in televised political debates. The paper presents relevant research at the intersection of citizenship, technologies and government/democracy, and describes the motivation, requirements and design of Democratic Replay, an online interactive video replay platform that offers a persistent, customisable digital space for: (a) members of the public to express their views as they watch online videos of political events; and (b) enabling for a richer collective understanding of what goes on in these complex media events

    SAsSy ā€“ Scrutable Autonomous Systems

    Get PDF
Abstract. An autonomous system consists of physical or virtual systems that can perform tasks without continuous human guidance. Autonomous systems are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, ranging from unmanned vehicles, to robotic surgery devices, to virtual agents which collate and process information on the internet. Existing autonomous systems are opaque, limiting their usefulness in many situations. In order to realise their promise, techniques for making such autonomous systems scrutable are therefore required. We believe that the creation of such scrutable autonomous systems rests on four foundations, namely an appropriate planning representation; the use of a human understandable reasoning mechanism, such as argumentation theory; appropriate natural language generation tools to translate logical statements into natural ones; and information presentation techniques to enable the user to cope with the deluge of information that autonomous systems can provide. Each of these foundations has its own unique challenges, as does the integration of all of these into a single system.
