Promoting physical activity among university students: a systematic review of controlled trials
Objective:
University study is often accompanied by a decline in physical activity (PA) levels but can offer the opportunity to
promote a lifelong active lifestyle. This review aims to summarize controlled trials of interventions promoting PA among uni-
versity students, describing the quality of the evidence, effective strategies, and deficiencies in the interventions employed, to
provide directions for future research and for practical implementations.
Data Source:
PubMed, PsychINFO, Cochrane Library, Education Source, and SPORTDiscus.
Study Inclusion Criteria:
Randomized or nonrandomized controlled trial, describing an intervention to promote PA in uni-
versity students, where PA was one of the outcomes and results were published in English.
Data Extraction:
Country, study design, participants\u2019 inclusion criteria, participation rate and characteristics, randomization,
blinding, theoretical framework, intervention characteristics, participant retention rate and withdrawal reasons, measures
employed, data analysis, PA results, and findings regarding PA correlates.
Data Synthesis:
Data were synthetized considering study characteristics, strategies used, and outcomes.
Results:
Two thousand five hundred eighty-five articles were identified. Twenty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. Sixteen
studies reported an increase in PA levels.
Conclusion:
Physical Activity promotion interventions should address a range of behavioral determinants. Personalized
approaches and PA sessions should be considered in future studies. The high risk of bias of many studies (mainly due to attrition
and poor reporting) and missing information about intervention components limit the strength of conclusions about the most
effective strategies and the evidence of effectiveness, highlighting the need for further high-quality studies

The role of human factors in stereotyping behavior and perception of digital library users: A robust clustering approach
To deliver effective personalization for digital library users, it is necessary to identify which human factors are most relevant in determining the behavior and perception of these users. This paper examines three key human factors: cognitive styles, levels of expertise and gender differences, and utilizes three individual clustering techniques: k-means, hierarchical clustering and fuzzy clustering to understand user behavior and perception. Moreover, robust clustering, capable of correcting the bias of individual clustering techniques, is used to obtain a deeper understanding. The robust clustering approach produced results that highlighted the relevance of cognitive style for user behavior, i.e., cognitive style dominates and justifies each of the robust clusters created. We also found that perception was mainly determined by the level of expertise of a user. We conclude that robust clustering is an effective technique to analyze user behavior and perception
Dynamics of Content Quality in Collaborative Knowledge Production
We explore the dynamics of user performance in collaborative knowledge
production by studying the quality of answers to questions posted on Stack
Exchange. We propose four indicators of answer quality: answer length, the
number of code lines and hyperlinks to external web content it contains, and
whether it is accepted by the asker as the most helpful answer to the question.
Analyzing millions of answers posted over the period from 2008 to 2014, we
uncover regular short-term and long-term changes in quality. In the short-term,
quality deteriorates over the course of a single session, with each successive
answer becoming shorter, with fewer code lines and links, and less likely to be
accepted. In contrast, performance improves over the long-term, with more
experienced users producing higher quality answers. These trends are not a
consequence of data heterogeneity, but rather have a behavioral origin. Our
findings highlight the complex interplay between short-term deterioration in
performance, potentially due to mental fatigue or attention depletion, and
long-term performance improvement due to learning and skill acquisition, and
its impact on the quality of user-generated content

Mining learning preferences in web-based instruction: Holists vs. Serialists
Web-based instruction programs are used by learners with diverse knowledge, skills and needs. These differences determine their preferences for the design of Web-based instruction programs and ultimately influence learners' success in using them. Cognitive style has been found to significantly affect learners' preferences of web-based instruction programs. However, the majority of previous studies focus on Field Dependence/Independence. Pask's Holist/Serialist dimension has conceptual links with Field Dependence/Independence but it is left mostly unstudied. Therefore, this study focuses on identifying how this dimension of cognitive style affects learner preferences of Web-based instruction programs. A data mining approach is used to illustrate the difference in preferences between Holists and Serialists. The findings show that there are clear differences in regard to content presentation and navigation support. Assessing learning outcomes in web searching: A comparison of tasks and query strategies
Users make frequent use of Web search for learning-related tasks, but little is known about how different Web search interaction strategies affect outcomes for learning-oriented tasks, or what implicit or explicit indicators could reliably be used to assess search-related learning on the Web. We describe a lab-based user study in which we investigated potential indicators of learning in web searching, effective query strategies for learning, and the relationship between search behavior and learning outcomes. Using questionnaires, analysis of written responses to knowledge prompts, and search log data, we found that searchers’ perceived learning outcomes closely matched their actual learning outcomes; that the amount searchers wrote in post-search questionnaire responses was highly correlated with their cognitive learning scores; and that the time searchers spent per document while searching was also highly and consistently correlated with higher-level cognitive learning scores. We also found that of the three query interaction conditions we applied, an intrinsically diverse presentation of results was associated with the highest percentage of users achieving combined factual and conceptual knowledge gains. Implementation-effectiveness trial of an ecological intervention for physical activity in ethnically diverse low income senior centers.
BackgroundAs the US population ages, there is an increasing need for evidence based, peer-led physical activity programs, particularly in ethnically diverse, low income senior centers where access is limited.Methods/designThe Peer Empowerment Program 4 Physical Activity' (PEP4PA) is a hybrid Type II implementation-effectiveness trial that is a peer-led physical activity (PA) intervention based on the ecological model of behavior change. The initial phase is a cluster randomized control trial randomized to either a peer-led PA intervention or usual center programming. After 18Â months, the intervention sites are further randomized to continued support or no support for another 6Â months. This study will be conducted at twelve senior centers in San Diego County in low income, diverse communities. In the intervention sites, 24 peer health coaches and 408 adults, aged 50Â years and older, are invited to participate. Peer health coaches receive training and support and utilize a tablet computer for delivery and tracking. There are several levels of intervention. Individual components include pedometers, step goals, counseling, and feedback charts. Interpersonal components include group walks, group sharing and health tips, and monthly celebrations. Community components include review of PA resources, walkability audit, sustainability plan, and streetscape improvements. The primary outcome of interest is intensity and location of PA minutes per day, measured every 6Â months by wrist and hip accelerometers and GPS devices. Secondary outcomes include blood pressure, physical, cognitive, and emotional functioning. Implementation measures include appropriateness & acceptability (perceived and actual fit), adoption & penetration (reach), fidelity (quantity & quality of intervention delivered), acceptability (satisfaction), costs, and sustainability.DiscussionUsing a peer led implementation strategy to deliver a multi-level community based PA program can enhance program adoption, implementation, and sustainment.Trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov, USA ( NCT02405325 ).
