Hackathons: Why Co-Location?

We draw on surveys and empirical evidence from participation in such events to conclude that the main incentives for participants are peer-to-peer learning and meaningful networking. We then consider why co-location provides an appropriate framework for these processes to occur, and emphasize the needs for future research in this area

Kantâs indulgences in the philosophy of perpetual peace was a call for nations and individuals to pursue peace and build on it for existential benefits and global peace. His insistence on âlove, virtuous duty to others and respectâ where founded on dignity on man. The objective of the work is to reemphasis that within the ambience of Kantâs philosophy of peace adequate interest into ought to be placed to the study of Arts and Humanities. Contemporaneously, man has experienced terrorism, kidnappings, wars and other forms of conflicts which has impeded peace building and universal harmony. The critical and analytical methods of philosophy as reflected in this work educe that through the instrumentality of Arts and Humanities, advancement of global peace is a possibility through Kantâs perpetual peace. Man therefore needs and desire peace, build on peace for continuous enjoyment of natureâs beneficence
Arts and Humanities Literature: Bibliometric Characteristics of Contributions by Turkish Authors
Scholarly communication in arts and humanities differs from that in the sciences. Arts and humanities scholars rely primarily on monographs as amedium of publication whereas scientists consider articles that appear in scholarly journals as the single most important publication outlet. The number of journal citation studies in arts and humanities is therefore limited. In this article, we investigate the bibliometric characteristics of 507 arts and humanities journal articles written by authors affiliated with Turkish institutions and indexed in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI) between the years 1975â2003. Journal articles constituted more than 60% of all publications. One third of all contributions were published during the last 4 years (1999â2003) and appeared in 16 different journals. An overwhelming majority of contributions (91%) were written in English, and 83% of them had single authorship. Researchers based at Turkish universities produced 90% of all publications. Two thirds of references in publications were to monographs. The median age of all references was 12 years. Eighty percent of publications authored by Turkish arts and humanities scholars were not cited at all while the remaining 20% (or 99 publications) were cited 304 times (anaverage of three citations per publication). Self-citation ratio was 31%. Two thirds of the cited publications were cited for the first time within 2 years of their publications
European Survey on Scholarly Practices and Digital Needs in the Arts and Humanities
This report summarizes the statistical analysis of the findings of a web-based survey conducted by the Digital Methods and Practices Observatory (DiMPO), a working group under VCC2 of the DARIAH research infrastructure (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities).
In order to provide an evidence-based, up-to-date, and meaningful account of the emerging information practices, needs and attitudes of arts and humanities researchers in the evolving European digital scholarly environment, the web survey involved a transnational team of researchers from more than a dozen countries, and addressed digitally-enabled research practices, attitudes and needs in all areas of Europe and across different arts and humanities disciplines and contexts

The hunt for submarines in classical art: mappings between scientific invention and artistic interpretation
This is a report to the AHRC's ICT in Arts and Humanities Research Programme.
This report stems from a project which aimed to produce a series of mappings between advanced imaging information and communications technologies (ICT) and needs within visual arts research. A secondary aim was to demonstrate the feasibility of a structured approach to establishing such mappings.
The project was carried out over 2006, from January to December, by the visual arts centre of the Arts and Humanities Data Service (AHDS Visual Arts).1 It was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) as one of the Strategy Projects run under the aegis of its ICT in Arts and Humanities Research programme. The programme, which runs from October 2003 until September 2008, aims âto develop, promote and monitor the AHRCâs ICT strategy, and to build capacity nation-wide in the use of ICT for arts and humanities researchâ.2 As part of this, the Strategy Projects were intended to contribute to the programme in two ways: knowledge-gathering projects would inform the programmeâs Fundamental Strategic Review of ICT, conducted for the AHRC in the second half of 2006, focusing âon critical strategic issues such as e-science and peer-review of digital resourcesâ. Resource-development projects would âbuild tools and resources of broad relevance across the range of the AHRCâs academic subject disciplinesâ.3 This project fell into the knowledge-gathering strand.

Preservation through access: the AHDS performing arts collections in ECLAP and Europeana
This poster provides an overview of the ongoing rescue of
valuable digital collections that had been taken down and
consequently lost to general access.
The University of Glasgow was home to the Arts and Humanities
Data Service Performing Arts (AHDS Performing Arts) [1], one
of the five arts and humanities data centres that constitute the Arts
and Humanities Data Service (AHDS). Since 1996 AHDS
supported the creation, curation, preservation and reuse of digital
materials for the UK Arts and Humanities research and teaching
community. AHDS Performing Arts, based in Glasgow, supported
research, learning and teaching in music, dance, theatre, radio,
film, television, and performance for thirteen years. Working with
the AHDS Executive, relevant performing arts collections have
been ingested, documented, preserved, and where possible made
available via the AHDS Cross Search Catalogue and Website to
researchers, practitioners, and the general public. Furthermore
strong relationships were developed with research and teaching
community upon a scoping study investigating user needs [2].
In 2007 the co-funders of the AHDS - Arts and Humanities
Research Council (AHRC) for the UK and the Joint Information
Systems Committee (JISC) - withdrew their funding. A detailed
risk assessment report was produced in response to the
withdrawal of core funding [3], but to no avail. When the AHDS
funding stopped, online access to these cultural resources
eventually became discontinued [4].
In 2010, the School of Culture and Creative Arts at the University
of Glasgow joined the EU-funded ECLAP project to ensure that at
least part of these resources could be accessible for the long term
by scholars and practitioners in the performing arts arena, and by
the general public. Below we briefly describe the ECLAP project,
the AHDS Performing Arts collections progressively available
through it and some thoughts on providing preservation through
access for this type of digital cultural resources
