Artist Publication. Printed for and commissioned by Antony Hudek for the exhibition 'The Incidental Person' at Apexart, New York, 2010. One of a series of artist publications produced by Office of Experiments. The publication represents research into autonomous forms of research and individual artists dealing with research outside of institutions. In many cases this work seeks to examine information that has been censored or redacted, generating speculation and evidence as it does so . Artist were selected on the basis that they create their own structures - such as Rich Pell and his Center for Post Natural History. Office of Experiments is another example of this. Other featured researchers were involved with Office of Epxeriments own research projects and occupy a contested space between official research and secrecy. All have questioned the authenticity of institutions in relation to knowledge and the work is set in the context of institutional critique. The research reflects Whites work as a former Director of O+I, the group which took over from the Artist Placement Group and on whose ideas Antony Hudek used for the exhibition 'The Incidental Person'

Networked Migrations: Listening to and performing the in-between space (Paper)

Two internet-based sonic performances, Letters and Bridges (between Leicester and Mexico City), and Migratory Dreams (between London and Bogotá), were developed by the artist with the leading question of what the 'in-between' space (Bhaba 1994; Ortega 2008) sounds like in the context of migration. Drawing on a Deep Listening (Oliveros 2005) practice, the artist undertook pre-performance workshops as a way to engage participants in the possibilities of travelling in time and space, and expressing through voice and other sounds feelings that arise when they migrate. The sharing of these sounds through the Internet in real time opened the idea of territory and allowed participants to express feelings towards place, identity and belonging, and to create mixed-reality narratives, within a supportive sound space free from geographical and cultural constraints. High quality bi-directional streaming audio software such as SoundJack and Tube Plug were used, adapted to the performance needs. This paper describes the process of the creation of each performance, considering its sonic, narrative, mediatised and performative aspects, offering a reflection on new auditoriums created for migrants' expression of their experiences in the 'in-between'. It argues that this specific approach helps migrants to expand their sense of space and develop an awareness of their multidimensional condition through sound

Petyarra and Moffatt: 'Looking from the sky'

Moffatt’s Up in the Sky series draws attention to the relation between sky and earth, through the content and camera angles of the images. Similarly, Kathleen Petyarre’s Central Desert acrylic dot painting evokes this relation representing country and Dreaming from a celestial perspective—as she says ‘looking from the sky’. Yet here any association between these artists seems to end with the urban artist refusing to engage Aboriginal tradition and the desert artist focused on Dreaming, country and heritage. However, a further connection between these disparate works may also be discerned as each, in differing ways, transforms our conventional perceptions of space and time. Reading these images in relation to Walter Benjamin’s concepts of the auratic and of messianic time, I suggest that each restructures dimension and duration putting in question the (post)modern calibrations of our space/time experience. This paper stages an engagement between these artists’ works and Benjamin’s concepts exploring the variations and modifications of the spatial and the temporal that hybrid cross-cultural exchanges require and facilitate
