Game-based Platforms for Artificial Intelligence Research

Games have been the perfect test-beds for artificial intelligence research for the characteristics that widely exist in real-world scenarios. Learning and optimisation, decision making in dynamic and uncertain environments, game theory, planning and scheduling, design and education are common research areas shared between games and real-world problems. Numerous open-sourced games or game-based environments have been implemented for studying artificial intelligence. In addition to single- or multi-player, collaborative or adversarial games, there has also been growing interest in implementing platforms for creative design in recent years. Those platforms provide ideal benchmarks for exploring and comparing artificial intelligence ideas and techniques. This paper reviews the game-based platforms for artificial intelligence research, discusses the research trend induced by the evolution of those platforms, and gives an outlook

Telerobot task planning and reasoning: Introduction to JPL artificial intelligence research

A view of the capabilities and areas of artificial intelligence research which are required for autonomous space telerobotics extending through the year 2000 is given. In the coming years, JPL will be conducting directed research to achieve these capabilities, as well as drawing heavily on collaborative efforts conducted with other research laboratories

Artificial Intelligence Research Branch future plans

This report contains information on the activities of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (FIA) at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) in 1992, as well as planned work in 1993. These activities span a range from basic scientific research through engineering development to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out in FIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. All of our work has research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems. FIA acts as the Agency's lead organization for research aspects of artificial intelligence, working closely with a second research laboratory at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and AI applications groups throughout all NASA centers. This report is organized along three major research themes: (1) Planning and Scheduling: deciding on a sequence of actions to achieve a set of complex goals and determining when to execute those actions and how to allocate resources to carry them out; (2) Machine Learning: techniques for forming theories about natural and man-made phenomena; and for improving the problem-solving performance of computational systems over time; and (3) Research on the acquisition, representation, and utilization of knowledge in support of diagnosis design of engineered systems and analysis of actual systems

Artificial intelligence research community and associations in Poland

In last years Artificial Intelligence presented a tremendous progress by offering a variety of novel methods, tools and their spectacular applications. Besides showing scientific breakthroughs it attracted interest both of the general public and industry. It also opened heated debates on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on changing the economy and society. Having in mind this international landscape, in this short paper we discuss the Polish AI research community, some of its main achievements, opportunities and limitations. We put this discussion in the context of the current developments in the international AI community. Moreover, we refer to activities of Polish scientific associations and their initiative of founding Polish Alliance for the Development of Artificial Intelligence (PP-RAI). Finally two last editions of PP-RAI joint conferences are summarized

Evolution of artificial intelligence research in human resources

The objective of the article is to investigate the evolution of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the area of Human Resources (HR). It presents a panorama of the research that used AI in the area of HR, through the quantitative descriptive analysis of journals and proceedings, registered in the base of the Library of Online Knowledge (B-on), in the period between the years of 2000 and 2018. 32 research publications have been identified that address the application of Artificial Intelligence in the Human Resources area. As a didactic support and aiming to facilitate the understanding of the analysis, the period of the 18 years studied was divided into 3 time periods (First decade, Reduction Period and Period of Growth). The study also raised the distribution of AI application in HR topics and the incidence in each of these themes. As a result, it was concluded that there are few researches on AI applied to Human Resources and a dispersed use behaviour. It is expected that the 9 inferences about the results mentioned in this essay will elicit future studies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A Synthesis of Language Ideas for AI Control Structures

    Get PDF
Two well known programming methodologies for artificial intelligence research are compared, the so-called pattern-directed invocation languages and the object-oriented languages. The features and limitations of both approaches are discussed. We show that pattern-directed invocation is a more general formalism, but entails a serious loss of efficiency. We then go on to demonstrate that a language for artificial intelligence research can be created that contains the best features of both approaches.MIT Artificial Intelligence Laborator
