Archetypes of Enterprise Social Network Users
Investments in enterprise social networks (ESNs) have increased rapidly in recent years. However, an ESN utilization intensity develops slowly, and there are a few well-grounded approaches to understand ESN usage. To elaborate on different archetypes of ESN users, we conducted a case study that comprised 28 interviews with a large IT services company. We present a model to characterize ESN users and classify them as archetypes based on the following two dimensions: individual openness to ESNs and perceived task-fit. We determine six archetypes of ESN users, namely, power users, limited users, reluctant users, repudiators, hidden champions, and question marks. From a theoretical viewpoint, this study contributes to the discussion around user typology of ESN users and the utilization intensity, acceptance, and value contribution of ESNs. In practice, results provide an orientation to organizations that intend to address both ESN users and the organization to increase the utilization intensity of ESNs
Theory-Based Affordances of Utilitarian, Hedonic and Dual-Purposed Technologies: A Literature Review
The key to an information systemâs (IS) success is its value experienced by the user. A promising approach to enhance user value is to design for the usersâ experiential desires. For example, fulfilled experiential desires enhance the usersâ satisfaction and loyalty. Despite these benefits, few design principles exist for developing IS according to the usersâ experiential desires. Therefore, the aim of this literature review is to aggregate the current state of knowledge concerning the different theoretical perspectives on utilitarian, hedonic and dual-purposed IS. We build a framework that illustrates the relationship between different theoretical perspectives on IS affordances (i.e., motivational, cognitive, affective, and social) and different technology types (i.e., utilitarian, hedonic, dual-purposed). The presented framework offers a starting point for the development of theory-based design principles for experiential affordances of IS. We conclude with a summary of opportunities for future research to extend our knowledge of experientially fulfilling IS
Socialification: Social Software Elements Analysis and Design
The goal of this paper is to initiate a âconversation on the undergraduate teaching of âsocial software analysis and design in applications âwhich are non-social-media specific. This course âcovers the topics required to strategically âââsocialifyâ organizational applications to engage âusers in the most productive way for the âorganization. To capture this effort, we suggest the âterm âsocialificationâ which means the use of social âsoftware design features in non-social-media âapplications. We provide some background and âcourse goals and learning objectives as well as a âcourse structure. We then discuss issues to consider âwhen implementing a course in social software âelements development. We also cover the theoretical âgrounding related to the interdisciplinary process âand explain how it contributes to the design of the âcourse.
Individual Enterprise Social Network Adoption: The Influence of Perceived Network Externalities and Perceived Social Capital Advantage
Empirical evidence indicates that Enterprise Social Networks facilitate intra-organizational knowledge sharing. While organizations continue to invest in Enterprise Social Networks, many implementation projects fail due to insuffi-cient user adoption. Against this background, this paper investigates factors that influence individualsâ adoption of Enterprise Social Networks. We thoroughly reviewed the existing literature and crafted a comprehensive adoption model. Be-sides commonly known adoption factors, we introduce perceived network exter-nalities and perceived social capital advantage to account for the specific context of Enterprise Social Networks. We tested our model using structural equation modeling and empirical survey data of 155 respondents. Our results show that perceived network externalities are by far the strongest predictor for enterprise social network adoption, followed by perceived enjoyment and perceived social capital advantage. In contrast to other studies, we find perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use to be insignificant
Identifying Value-adding Users in Enterprise Social Networks
Enterprise Social Networks (ESN) have been gaining increasing attention both in academia and practice. In previous works, different user types were identified in ESN. However, there is no clear definition of value-adding users, their characteristics and how this type of user can be identified. Based on a literature review, we show that value-adding users are defined in different ways in respect to different objectives, for example spreading knowledge, vivacity of the network or real-time feedback. Each of the value-adding users shows different characteristics that are allocated to the following dimensions: network structure, message, behavior, and social network affinity. Based on the objectives and characteristics, we conduct a single case study, analyze a dataset of a cooperating company, conduct several interviews, and thereby identify value-adding users with respect to objectives. So, we can show that our approach is applicable, useful and that it is a valuable means to take decisions
This project aims to identify the editorial strategy used by PĂșblico to cover the last European Elections, in particular on its Facebook page. Determining which topics deserve attention, the media outlets play an important role on shaping the political and social reality. The role of social networks in news distribution has increased, largely due to the advent of mobile devices, which enable them to reach the audience instantly. At the same time, concerns about fake news also grow because due to social media platforms features that allow content to be passed between users without any factual verification or editorial analysis. To achieve the objective of this work have been identified all the pieces published on PĂșblicoâs website concerning the European Elections, and analyzed the publications made on the respective Facebook page, between 22 and 28 May 2019. The results make it clear that Facebook still be taken as a tool to lead users to the website
