Towards Optimal Distributed Node Scheduling in a Multihop Wireless Network through Local Voting
In a multihop wireless network, it is crucial but challenging to schedule
transmissions in an efficient and fair manner. In this paper, a novel
distributed node scheduling algorithm, called Local Voting, is proposed. This
algorithm tries to semi-equalize the load (defined as the ratio of the queue
length over the number of allocated slots) through slot reallocation based on
local information exchange. The algorithm stems from the finding that the
shortest delivery time or delay is obtained when the load is semi-equalized
throughout the network. In addition, we prove that, with Local Voting, the
network system converges asymptotically towards the optimal scheduling.
Moreover, through extensive simulations, the performance of Local Voting is
further investigated in comparison with several representative scheduling
algorithms from the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed
algorithm achieves better performance than the other distributed algorithms in
terms of average delay, maximum delay, and fairness. Despite being distributed,
the performance of Local Voting is also found to be very close to a centralized
algorithm that is deemed to have the optimal performance
Cross-layer Congestion Control, Routing and Scheduling Design in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
This paper considers jointly optimal design of crosslayer congestion control, routing and scheduling for ad hoc
wireless networks. We first formulate the rate constraint and scheduling constraint using multicommodity flow variables, and formulate resource allocation in networks with fixed wireless channels (or single-rate wireless devices that can mask channel variations) as a utility maximization problem with these constraints.
By dual decomposition, the resource allocation problem
naturally decomposes into three subproblems: congestion control,
routing and scheduling that interact through congestion price.
The global convergence property of this algorithm is proved. We
next extend the dual algorithm to handle networks with timevarying
channels and adaptive multi-rate devices. The stability
of the resulting system is established, and its performance is
characterized with respect to an ideal reference system which
has the best feasible rate region at link layer.
We then generalize the aforementioned results to a general
model of queueing network served by a set of interdependent
parallel servers with time-varying service capabilities, which
models many design problems in communication networks. We
show that for a general convex optimization problem where a
subset of variables lie in a polytope and the rest in a convex set,
the dual-based algorithm remains stable and optimal when the
constraint set is modulated by an irreducible finite-state Markov
chain. This paper thus presents a step toward a systematic way
to carry out cross-layer design in the framework of “layering as
optimization decomposition” for time-varying channel models
Beyond Geometry : Towards Fully Realistic Wireless Models
Signal-strength models of wireless communications capture the gradual fading
of signals and the additivity of interference. As such, they are closer to
reality than other models. However, nearly all theoretic work in the SINR model
depends on the assumption of smooth geometric decay, one that is true in free
space but is far off in actual environments. The challenge is to model
realistic environments, including walls, obstacles, reflections and anisotropic
antennas, without making the models algorithmically impractical or analytically
intractable.
We present a simple solution that allows the modeling of arbitrary static
situations by moving from geometry to arbitrary decay spaces. The complexity of
a setting is captured by a metricity parameter Z that indicates how far the
decay space is from satisfying the triangular inequality. All results that hold
in the SINR model in general metrics carry over to decay spaces, with the
resulting time complexity and approximation depending on Z in the same way that
the original results depends on the path loss term alpha. For distributed
algorithms, that to date have appeared to necessarily depend on the planarity,
we indicate how they can be adapted to arbitrary decay spaces.
Finally, we explore the dependence on Z in the approximability of core
problems. In particular, we observe that the capacity maximization problem has
exponential upper and lower bounds in terms of Z in general decay spaces. In
Euclidean metrics and related growth-bounded decay spaces, the performance
depends on the exact metricity definition, with a polynomial upper bound in
terms of Z, but an exponential lower bound in terms of a variant parameter phi.
On the plane, the upper bound result actually yields the first approximation of
a capacity-type SINR problem that is subexponential in alpha
Universal Framework for Wireless Scheduling Problems
An overarching issue in resource management of wireless networks is assessing their capacity: How much communication can be achieved in a network, utilizing all the tools available: power control, scheduling, routing, channel assignment and rate adjustment? We propose the first framework for approximation algorithms in the physical model that addresses these questions in full, including rate control. The approximations obtained are doubly logarithmic in the link length and rate diversity. Where previous bounds are known, this gives an exponential improvement.
A key contribution is showing that the complex interference relationship of the physical model can be simplified into a novel type of amenable conflict graphs, at a small cost. We also show that the approximation obtained is provably the best possible for any conflict graph formulation
New Graph Model for Channel Assignment in Ad Hoc Wireless Networks
The channel assignment problem in ad hoc wireless networks is investigated. The problem is to assign channels to hosts in such a way that interference among hosts is eliminated and the total number of channels is minimised. Interference is caused by direct collisions from hosts that can hear each other or indirect collisions from hosts that cannot hear each other, but simultaneously transmit to the same destination. A new class of disk graphs (FDD: interFerence Double Disk graphs) is proposed that include both kinds of interference edges. Channel assignment in wireless networks is a vertex colouring problem in FDD graphs. It is shown that vertex colouring in FDD graphs is NP-complete and the chromatic number of an FDD graph is bounded by its clique number times a constant. A polynomial time approximation algorithm is presented for channel assignment and an upper bound 14 on its performance ratio is obtained. Results from a simulation study reveal that the new graph model can provide a more accurate estimation of the number of channels required for collision avoidance than previous models
Distributed Algorithms for Spectrum Allocation, Power Control, Routing, and Congestion Control in Wireless Networks
We develop distributed algorithms to allocate resources in multi-hop wireless
networks with the aim of minimizing total cost. In order to observe the
fundamental duplexing constraint that co-located transmitters and receivers
cannot operate simultaneously on the same frequency band, we first devise a
spectrum allocation scheme that divides the whole spectrum into multiple
sub-bands and activates conflict-free links on each sub-band. We show that the
minimum number of required sub-bands grows asymptotically at a logarithmic rate
with the chromatic number of network connectivity graph. A simple distributed
and asynchronous algorithm is developed to feasibly activate links on the
available sub-bands. Given a feasible spectrum allocation, we then design
node-based distributed algorithms for optimally controlling the transmission
powers on active links for each sub-band, jointly with traffic routes and user
input rates in response to channel states and traffic demands. We show that
under specified conditions, the algorithms asymptotically converge to the

Cognitive radio-enabled Internet of Vehicles (IoVs): a cooperative spectrum sensing and allocation for vehicular communication
Internet of Things (IoTs) era is expected to empower all aspects of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to improve transport safety and reduce road accidents. US Federal Communication Commission (FCC) officially allocated 75MHz spectrum in the 5.9GHz band to support vehicular communication which many studies have found insufficient. In this paper, we studied the application of Cognitive Radio (CR) technology to IoVs in order to increase the spectrum resource opportunities available for vehicular communication, especially when the officially allocated 75MHz spectrum in 5.9GHz band is not enough due to high demands as a result of increasing number of connected vehicles as already foreseen in the near era of IoTs. We proposed a novel CR Assisted Vehicular NETwork (CRAVNET) framework which empowers CR enabled vehicles to make opportunistic usage of licensed spectrum bands on the highways. We also developed a novel co-operative three-state spectrum sensing and allocation model which makes CR vehicular secondary units (SUs) aware of additional spectrum resources opportunities on their current and future positions and applies optimal sensing node allocation algorithm to guarantee timely acquisition of the available channels within a limited sensing time. The results of the theoretical analyses and simulation experiments have demonstrated that the proposed model can significantly improve the performance of a cooperative spectrum sensing and provide vehicles with additional spectrum opportunities without harmful interference against the Primary Users (PUs) activities
Cross-layer schemes for performance optimization in wireless networks
Wireless networks are undergoing rapid progress and inspiring numerous applications. As the application of wireless networks becomes broader, they are expected to not only provide ubiquitous connectivity, but also support end users with certain service guarantees.
End-to-end delay is an important Quality of Service (QoS) metric in multihop wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to minimize end-to-end delay through joint optimization of network layer routing and link layer scheduling. Two cross-layer schemes, a loosely coupled cross-layer scheme and a tightly coupled cross-layer scheme, are proposed. The two cross-layer schemes involve interference modeling in multihop wireless networks with omnidirectional antenna. In addition, based on the interference model, multicast schedules are optimized to minimize the total end-to-end delay.
Throughput is another important QoS metric in wireless networks. This dissertation addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented. Based on the interference model, routing, spatial multiplexing, and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. The throughput optimization problem is first addressed in constant bit rate networks and then in variable bit rate networks. In a variable data rate network, transmitters can use adaptive coding and modulation schemes to change their data rates so that the data rates are supported by the Signal to Noise and Interference Ratio (SINR).
