    An Innovative 3D Ultrasonic Actuator with Multidegree of Freedom for Machine Vision and Robot Guidance Industrial Applications Using A Single Vibration Ring Transducer

    This paper presents an innovative 3D piezoelectric ultrasonic actuator using a single flexural vibration ring transducer, for machine vision and robot guidance industrial applications. The proposed actuator is principally aiming to overcome the visual spotlight focus angle of digital visual data capture transducer, digital cameras and enhance the machine vision system ability to perceive and move in 3D. The actuator Design, structures, working principles and finite element analysis are discussed in this paper. A prototype of the actuator was fabricated. Experimental tests and measurements showed the ability of the developed prototype to provide 3D motions of Multidegree of freedom, with typical speed of movement equal to 35 revolutions per minute, a resolution of less than 5μm and maximum load of 3.5 Newton. These initial characteristics illustrate, the potential of the developed 3D micro actuator to gear the spotlight focus angle issue of digital visual data capture transducers and possible improvement that such technology could bring to the machine vision and robot guidance industrial applications

    The first generation of surgical robots are already being installed in a number of operating rooms around the world. Robotics is being introduced to medicine because it allows for unprecedented control and precision of surgical instruments in minimally invasive procedures. So far, robots have been used to position an endoscope, perform gallbladder surgery and correct gastroesophogeal reflux and heartburn. The ultimate goal of the robotic surgery field is to design a robot that can be used to perform closed-chest, beating-heart surgery. The use of robotics in surgery will expand over the next decades without any doubt. Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a revolutionary approach in surgery. In MIS, the operation is performed with instruments and viewing equipment inserted into the body through small incisions created by the surgeon, in contrast to open surgery with large incisions. This minimizes surgical trauma and damage to healthy tissue, resulting in shorter patient recovery time. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the state-of-art, to present new ideas, original results and practical experiences in this expanding area. Nevertheless, many chapters in the book concern advanced research on this growing area. The book provides critical analysis of clinical trials, assessment of the benefits and risks of the application of these technologies. This book is certainly a small sample of the research activity on Medical Robotics going on around the globe as you read it, but it surely covers a good deal of what has been done in the field recently, and as such it works as a valuable source for researchers interested in the involved subjects, whether they are currently “medical roboticists” or not

    One Tone, Two Ears, Three Dimensions: An investigation of qualitative echolocation strategies in synthetic bats and real robots

    Institute of Perception, Action and BehaviourThe aim of the work reported in this thesis is to investigate a methodology for studying perception by building and testing robotic models of animal sensory mechanisms. Much of Artificial Intelligence studies agent perception by exploring architectures for linking (often abstract) sensors and motors so as to give rise to particular behaviour. By contrast, this work proposes that perceptual investigations should begin with a characterisation of the underlying physical laws which govern the specific interaction of a sensor (or actuator) with its environment throughout the execution of a task. Moreover, it demonstrates that, through an understanding of task-physics, problems for which architectural solutions or explanations are often proposed may be solved more simply at the sensory interface - thereby minimising subsequent computation. This approach is applied to an investigation of the acoustical cues that may be exploited by several species of tone emitting insectivorous bats (species in the families Rhinolophidae and Hipposideridae) which localise prey using systematic pinnae scanning movements. From consideration of aspects of the sound filtering performed by the external and inner ear or these bats, three target localisation mechanisms are hypothesised and tested aboard a 6 degree-of-freedom, binaural, robotic echolocation system.In the first case, it is supposed that echolocators with narrow-band call structures use pinna movement to alter the directional sensitivity of their perceptual systems in the same whay that broad-band emitting bats rely on pinnae morphology to alter acoustic directionality at different frequencies.Scanning receivers also create dynamic cues - in the form of frequency and amplitude modulations - which very systematically with target angle. The second hypothesis investigated involves the extraction of timing cues from amplitude modulated echo envelopes

    Robot kinematics: applications in virtual reality based pedagogy and sensor calibration

    Conventions exist to describe the kinematics of a robot concisely, providing information about both its form and pose (position and orientation). Although mathematically convenient, the physical correlation between the parameters of these conventions and the robot that they represent is not necessarily intuitively obvious. Those who are new to the field of robotics may find it especially difficult to visualize these relationships. After presenting relevant background information on kinematics, robotics, virtual reality, and inertial sensors, this thesis investigates the effectiveness of using desktop virtual reality tools to help university-level students with the visualization of fundamental concepts in robot kinematics. Specifically, it examines how the new “Rotation Tool” assists students in the visualization of fixed and mobile frame compound rotations while verifying their non-commutative nature. It also explains how the new “Build-A-Robot” aids students in identifying the role that each of the Denavit-Hartenberg parameters plays in the description of the position and orientation of a serial manipulator’s component links. To enable flexible, real-time user interaction, Build-A-Robot employed a novel approach wherein MATLAB was used to directly manipulate the fundamental geometry of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) objects. Survey feedback and examination results are presented which indicate the students’ increased understanding that resulted after using both of these tools. This improvement was especially apparent among students who struggled to understand the concepts when traditional teaching methods alone were used. Tolerances in the manufacturing and assembly of robot arms introduce errors to the nominal kinematic models specified by manufacturers. This thesis also considers the impact of non-ideal kinematic parameters on the motion of the end-effector of a SCARA robot, which was used to calibrate an attached dual-axis accelerometer. Two novel, in-place calibration routines that employ dynamic accelerations are presented and validated using experimental data
