    A Model-Driven Architecture Approach to the Efficient Identification of Services on Service-oriented Enterprise Architecture

    Service-Oriented Enterprise Architecture requires the efficient development of loosely-coupled and interoperable sets of services. Existing design approaches do not always take full advantage of the value and importance of the engineering invested in existing legacy systems. This paper proposes an approach to define the key services from such legacy systems effectively. The approach focuses on identifying these services based on a Model-Driven Architecture approach supported by guidelines over a wide range of possible service types

    Service Elements Valuation Using an Enterprise Architecture Language

    This article defines a service as an architecture of processes, software and infrastructure elements for serving people. An architecture language therefore is a means to structure and analyze the values of service elements and the service as a whole. We provide a value-based perspective, which first includes a review of the concept of value in the context of service architectures for services. Here we conclude that multiple, even competing, values are at stake for different parts of a service. Second, the paper discusses a method for the valuation of a service using competing value constructs. We also demonstrate by a case how a formal architecture language can be used to calculate service values. Finally, the results are discussed and suggestions for further research are given

    Where do we stand in the theory of finance? : a selective overview with reference to Erich Gutenberg

    For the past 20 years, financial markets research has concerned itself with issues related to the evaluation and management of financial securities in efficient capital markets and with issues of management control in incomplete markets. The following selective overview focuses on key aspects of the theory and empirical experience of management control under conditions of asymmetric information. The objective is examine the validity of the recently advanced hypothesis on the myths of corporate control. The present overview is based on Gutenberg's position that there exists a discrete corporate interest, as distinct from and separate from the interests of the shareholders or other stakeholders. In the third volume of Grundlagen der BWL: Die Finanzen, published in 1969, this position of Gutenberg's is coupled with an appeal for a so-called financial equilibrium to be maintained. Not until recently have models grounded in capital market theory been developed which also allow for a firm's management to exercise autonomy vis-à-vis its stakeholder.     Applying Real Options Thinking to Information Security in Networked Organizations

    An information security strategy of an organization participating in a networked business sets out the plans for designing a variety of actions that ensure confidentiality, availability, and integrity of company’s key information assets. The actions are concerned with authentication and nonrepudiation of authorized users of these assets. We assume that the primary objective of security efforts in a company is improving and sustaining resiliency, which means security contributes to the ability of an organization to withstand discontinuities and disruptive events, to get back to its normal operating state, and to adapt to ever changing risk environments. When companies collaborating in a value web view security as a business issue, risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis techniques are necessary and explicit part of their process of resource allocation and budgeting, no matter if security spendings are treated as capital investment or operating expenditures. This paper contributes to the application of quantitative approaches to assessing risks, costs, and benefits associated with the various components making up the security strategy of a company participating in value networks. We take a risk-based approach to determining what types of security a strategy should include and how much of each type is enough. We adopt a real-options-based perspective of security and make a proposal to value the extent to which alternative components in a security strategy contribute to organizational resiliency and protect key information assets from being impeded, disrupted, or destroyed

    An Exploration of Enterprise Architecture Research

    Management of the enterprise architecture has become increasingly recognized as a crucial part of both business and IT management. Still, a common understanding and methodological consistency seems far from being developed. Acknowledging the significant role of research in moving the development process along, this article employs different bibliometric methods, complemented by an extensive qualitative interpretation of the research field, to provide a unique overview of the enterprise architecture literature. After answering our research questions about the collaboration via co-authorships, the intellectual structure of the research field and its most influential works, and the principal themes of research, we propose an agenda for future research based on the findings from the above analyses and their comparison to empirical insights from the literature. In particular, our study finds a considerable degree of co-authorship clustering and a positive impact of the extent of co-authorship on the diffusion of works on enterprise architecture. In addition, this article identifies three major research streams and shows that research to date has revolved around specific themes, while some of high practical relevance receive minor attention. Hence, the contribution of our study is manifold and offers support for researchers and practitioners alike

    Customer lifetime value: a framework for application in the insurance industry - building a business process to generate and maintain an automatic estimation agent

    Research Project submited as partial fulfilment for the Master Degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Knowledge Management and Business IntelligenceIn recent years the topic of Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) or in its expanded version, Customer Equity (CE) has become popular as a strategic tool across several industries, in particular in retail and services. Although the core concepts of CLV modelling have been studied for several years and the mathematics that underpins the concept is well understood, the application to specific industries is not trivial. The complexities associated with the development of a CLV programme as a business process are not insignificant causing a myriad of obstacles to its implementation. This research project builds a framework to develop and implement the CLV concept as maintainable business process with the focus on the Insurance Industry, in particular for the nonlife line of business. Key concepts, as churn modelling, portfolio stationary premiums, fiscal policies and balance sheet information must be integrated into the CLV framework. In addition, an automatic estimation machine (AEM) is developed to standardize CLV calculations. The concept of AEM is important, given that CLV information “must be fit for purpose”, when used in other business processes. The field work is carried out in a Portuguese Bancassurance Company which is part of an important Portuguese financial Group. Firstly this is done by investigating how to translate and apply the known CLV concepts into the insurance industry context. Secondly, a sensitivity study is done to establish the optimum parameters strategy. This is done by incorporating and comparing several Datamining concepts applied to churn prediction and customer base segmentation. Scenarios for balance sheet information usage and others actuarial concepts are analyzed to calibrate the Cash Flow component of the CLV framework. Thirdly, an Automatic Estimation Agent is defined for application to the current or the expanding firm portfolio, the advantages of using the SOA approach for deployment is also verified. Additionally a comparative impact study is done between two valuation views: the Premium/Cost driven versus the CLV driven. Finally a framework for a BPM is presented, not only for building the AEM but also for its maintenance according to an explicit performance threshold.O tema do valor embebido do Cliente (Customer Lifetime Value ou CLV), ou na sua versão expandida, valoração patrimonial do Cliente (Customer Equity), adquiriu alguma relevância como ferramenta estratégica em várias indústrias, em particular na Distribuição e Serviços. Embora os principais conceitos subjacentes ao CLV tenham sido já desenvolvidos e a matemática financeira possa ser considerada trivial, a sua aplicação prática não o é. As complexidades associadas ao desenvolvimento de um programa de CLV, especialmente na forma de Processo de Negócio não são insignificantes, existindo uma miríade de obstáculos à sua implementação. Este projecto de pesquisa desenvolve o enquadramento de adaptação, actividades e processos necessários para a aplicação do conceito à Industria de Seguros, especificamente para uma empresa que actue no Sector Não Vida. Conceitos-chave, como a modelação da erosão das carteiras, a estacionaridade dos prémios, as políticas fiscais e informação de balanço terão de ser integrados no âmbito do programa de modelação do valor embebido do Cliente. Um dos entregáveis será uma “máquina automática de estimação” do valor embebido, essa ferramenta servirá para padronizar os cálculos do CLV, para além disso é importante, dado que a informação do CLV será utilizada noutros processos de negócio, como por exemplo a distribuição ou vendas. O trabalho de campo é realizado numa empresa de Seguros tipo Bancassurance pertença de um Grupo Financeiro Português relevante. O primeiro passo do trabalho será a compressão do conceito do CLV e como aplicá-lo aos Seguros. Em segundo lugar, será feito um estudo de sensibilidade para determinar a estratégia óptima de parâmetros através de aplicação de técnicas de modelação. Em terceiro lugar serão abordados alguns detalhes da máquina automática de estimação e a sua utilização do ponto de vista dos Serviços e Sistemas de Negócio ( e.g. via SOA). Em paralelo será realizado um estudo de impacto comparativo entre as duas visões de avaliação do negócio: Rácio de Sinistralidade vs CLV. Por último será apresentado um desenho de processo para a manutenção continuada da utilização deste conceito no suporte ao negócio

    An Assessment Framework to Determine the Strategic Value of IT Architectures in Smart Grids

    Design Science Research (DSR) is a popular new research approach and paradigm, for which a number of research methodologies have been developed. One of the challenges facing researchers wanting to apply this new approach is the choice of research methodology. In this paper we give an account of six DSR methodologies and we compare them using a Design Science Research Methodology Comparison Framework that we adapted from an existing Information Systems Development Methodology Comparison Framework. Based on the outcomes of the comparison, we develop a set of technological rules that forms a contingency-based framework to support Design Science Researchers in choosing an appropriate and well-suited DSR methodology, depending on the contingencies of the situation at hand
