From mindless masses to small groups: Conceptualizing collective behavior in crowd modeling.
Computer simulations are increasingly used to monitor and predict behavior at large crowd events, such as mass gatherings, festivals and evacuations. We critically examine the crowd modeling literature and call for future simulations of crowd behavior to be based more closely on findings from current social psychological research. A systematic review was conducted on the crowd modeling literature (N = 140 articles) to identify the assumptions about crowd behavior that modelers use in their simulations. Articles were coded according to the way in which crowd structure was modeled. It was found that 2 broad types are used: mass approaches and small group approaches. However, neither the mass nor the small group approaches can accurately simulate the large collective behavior that has been found in extensive empirical research on crowd events. We argue that to model crowd behavior realistically, simulations must use methods which allow crowd members to identify with each other, as suggested by self-categorization theory
Chemotaxis-based spatial self-organization algorithms
Self-organization is a process that increases the order of a system as a result of local interactions among low-level, simple components, without the guidance of an outside source. Spatial self-organization is a process in which shapes and structures emerge at a global level from collective movements of low level shape primitives. Spatial self-organization is a stochastic process, and the outcome of the aggregation cannot necessarily be guaranteed. Despite the inherent ambiguity, self-organizing complex systems arise everywhere in nature. Motivated by the ability of living cells to form specific shapes and structures, we develop two self-organizing systems towards the ultimate goal of directing the spatial self-organizing process. We first develop a self-sorting system composed of a mixture of cells. The system consistently produces a sorted structure. We then extend the sorting system to a general shape formation system. To do so, we introduce morphogenetic primitives (MP), defined as software agents, which enable self-organizing shape formation of user-defined structures through a chemotaxis paradigm.
One challenge that arises from the shape formation process is that the process may form two or more stable final configurations. In order to direct the self-organizing process, we find a way to characterize the macroscopic configuration of the MP swarm. We demonstrate that statistical moments of the primitives' locations can successfully capture the macroscopic structure of the aggregated shape. We do so by predicting the final configurations produced by our spatial self-organization system at an early stage in the process using features based on the statistical moments. At the next stage, we focus on developing a technique to control the outcome of bifurcating aggregations. We identify thresholds of the moments and generate biased initial conditions whose statistical moments meet the thresholds. By starting simulations with biased, random initial configurations, we successfully control the aggregation for a number of swarms produced by the agent-based shape formation system. This thesis demonstrates that chemotaxis can be used as a paradigm to create an agent- based spatial self-organization system. Task Allocation in Foraging Robot Swarms:The Role of Information Sharing
Autonomous task allocation is a desirable feature of robot swarms that collect and deliver items in scenarios where congestion, caused by accumulated items or robots, can temporarily interfere with swarm behaviour. In such settings, self-regulation of workforce can prevent unnecessary energy consumption. We explore two types of self-regulation: non-social, where robots become idle upon experiencing congestion, and social, where robots broadcast information about congestion to their team mates in order to socially inhibit foraging. We show that while both types of self-regulation can lead to improved energy efficiency and increase the amount of resource collected, the speed with which information about congestion flows through a swarm affects the scalability of these algorithms

Physical crowds and psychological crowds: applying self-categorization theory to computer simulation of collective behaviour
Computer models are used to simulate pedestrian behaviour for safety at mass events. Previous research has indicated differences between physical crowds of co-present individuals, and psychological crowds who mobilise collective behaviour through a shared social identity. This thesis aimed to examine the assumptions models use about crowds, conduct two studies of crowd movement to ascertain the behavioural signatures of psychological crowds, and implement these into a theoretically-driven model of crowd behaviour.
A systematic review of crowd modelling literature is presented which explores the assumptions about crowd behaviour being used in current models. This review demonstrates that models portray the crowd as either an identical mass with no inter-personal connections, unique individuals with no connections to others, or as small groups within a crowd. Thus, no models have incorporated the role of self-categorisation theory needed to simulate collective behaviour.
The empirical research in this thesis aimed to determine the behavioural effects of self-categorisation on pedestrian movement. Findings from a first study illustrate that, in comparison to a physical crowd, perception of shared social identities in the psychological crowd motivated participants to maintain close proximity with ingroup members through regulation of their speed and distance walked. A second study showed that collective self-organisation seemed to be increased by the presence of an outgroup, causing ingroup members to tighten formation to avoid splitting up.
Finally, a computer model is presented which implements the quantified behavioural effects of self-categorisation found in the behavioural studies. A self-categorisation parameter is introduced to simulate ingroup members self-organising to remain together. This is compared to a physical crowd simulation with group identities absent. The results demonstrate that the self-categorisation parameter provides more accurate simulation of psychological crowd behaviour. Thus, it is argued that models should implement self-categorisation into simulations of psychological crowds to increase safety at mass events
A complex systems approach to education in Switzerland
The insights gained from the study of complex systems in biological, social, and engineered systems enables us not only to observe and understand, but also to actively design systems which will be capable of successfully coping with complex and dynamically changing situations. The methods and mindset required for this approach have been applied to educational systems with their diverse levels of scale and complexity. Based on the general case made by Yaneer Bar-Yam, this paper applies the complex systems approach to the educational system in Switzerland. It confirms that the complex systems approach is valid. Indeed, many recommendations made for the general case have already been implemented in the Swiss education system. To address existing problems and difficulties, further steps are recommended. This paper contributes to the further establishment complex systems approach by shedding light on an area which concerns us all, which is a frequent topic of discussion and dispute among politicians and the public, where billions of dollars have been spent without achieving the desired results, and where it is difficult to directly derive consequences from actions taken. The analysis of the education system's different levels, their complexity and scale will clarify how such a dynamic system should be approached, and how it can be guided towards the desired performance
