Solving DCOPs with Distributed Large Neighborhood Search
The field of Distributed Constraint Optimization has gained momentum in
recent years, thanks to its ability to address various applications related to
multi-agent cooperation. Nevertheless, solving Distributed Constraint
Optimization Problems (DCOPs) optimally is NP-hard. Therefore, in large-scale,
complex applications, incomplete DCOP algorithms are necessary. Current
incomplete DCOP algorithms suffer of one or more of the following limitations:
they (a) find local minima without providing quality guarantees; (b) provide
loose quality assessment; or (c) are unable to benefit from the structure of
the problem, such as domain-dependent knowledge and hard constraints.
Therefore, capitalizing on strategies from the centralized constraint solving
community, we propose a Distributed Large Neighborhood Search (D-LNS) framework
to solve DCOPs. The proposed framework (with its novel repair phase) provides
guarantees on solution quality, refining upper and lower bounds during the
iterative process, and can exploit domain-dependent structures. Our
experimental results show that D-LNS outperforms other incomplete DCOP
algorithms on both structured and unstructured problem instances
Parallel local search for solving Constraint Problems on the Cell Broadband Engine (Preliminary Results)
We explore the use of the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/BE for short) for
combinatorial optimization applications: we present a parallel version of a
constraint-based local search algorithm that has been implemented on a
multiprocessor BladeCenter machine with twin Cell/BE processors (total of 16
SPUs per blade). This algorithm was chosen because it fits very well the
Cell/BE architecture and requires neither shared memory nor communication
between processors, while retaining a compact memory footprint. We study the
performance on several large optimization benchmarks and show that this
achieves mostly linear time speedups, even sometimes super-linear. This is
possible because the parallel implementation might explore simultaneously
different parts of the search space and therefore converge faster towards the
best sub-space and thus towards a solution. Besides getting speedups, the
resulting times exhibit a much smaller variance, which benefits applications
where a timely reply is critical
Variable Annealing Length and Parallelism in Simulated Annealing
In this paper, we propose: (a) a restart schedule for an adaptive simulated
annealer, and (b) parallel simulated annealing, with an adaptive and
parameter-free annealing schedule. The foundation of our approach is the
Modified Lam annealing schedule, which adaptively controls the temperature
parameter to track a theoretically ideal rate of acceptance of neighboring
states. A sequential implementation of Modified Lam simulated annealing is
almost parameter-free. However, it requires prior knowledge of the annealing
length. We eliminate this parameter using restarts, with an exponentially
increasing schedule of annealing lengths. We then extend this restart schedule
to parallel implementation, executing several Modified Lam simulated annealers
in parallel, with varying initial annealing lengths, and our proposed parallel
annealing length schedule. To validate our approach, we conduct experiments on
an NP-Hard scheduling problem with sequence-dependent setup constraints. We
compare our approach to fixed length restarts, both sequentially and in
parallel. Our results show that our approach can achieve substantial
performance gains, throughout the course of the run, demonstrating our approach

Parsing of Spoken Language under Time Constraints
Spoken language applications in natural dialogue settings place serious
requirements on the choice of processing architecture. Especially under adverse
phonetic and acoustic conditions parsing procedures have to be developed which
do not only analyse the incoming speech in a time-synchroneous and incremental
manner, but which are able to schedule their resources according to the varying
conditions of the recognition process. Depending on the actual degree of local
ambiguity the parser has to select among the available constraints in order to
narrow down the search space with as little effort as possible.
A parsing approach based on constraint satisfaction techniques is discussed.
It provides important characteristics of the desired real-time behaviour and
attempts to mimic some of the attention focussing capabilities of the human

Any-k: Anytime Top-k Tree Pattern Retrieval in Labeled Graphs
Many problems in areas as diverse as recommendation systems, social network
analysis, semantic search, and distributed root cause analysis can be modeled
as pattern search on labeled graphs (also called "heterogeneous information
networks" or HINs). Given a large graph and a query pattern with node and edge
label constraints, a fundamental challenge is to nd the top-k matches ac-
cording to a ranking function over edge and node weights. For users, it is di
cult to select value k . We therefore propose the novel notion of an any-k
ranking algorithm: for a given time budget, re- turn as many of the top-ranked
results as possible. Then, given additional time, produce the next lower-ranked
results quickly as well. It can be stopped anytime, but may have to continues
until all results are returned. This paper focuses on acyclic patterns over
arbitrary labeled graphs. We are interested in practical algorithms that
effectively exploit (1) properties of heterogeneous networks, in particular
selective constraints on labels, and (2) that the users often explore only a
fraction of the top-ranked results. Our solution, KARPET, carefully integrates
aggressive pruning that leverages the acyclic nature of the query, and
incremental guided search. It enables us to prove strong non-trivial time and
space guarantees, which is generally considered very hard for this type of
graph search problem. Through experimental studies we show that KARPET achieves
running times in the order of milliseconds for tree patterns on large networks

A Parameterisation of Algorithms for Distributed Constraint Optimisation via Potential Games
This paper introduces a parameterisation of learning algorithms for distributed constraint optimisation problems (DCOPs). This parameterisation encompasses many algorithms developed in both the computer science and game theory literatures. It is built on our insight that when formulated as noncooperative games, DCOPs form a subset of the class of potential games. This result allows us to prove convergence properties of algorithms developed in the computer science literature using game theoretic methods. Furthermore, our parameterisation can assist system designers by making the pros and cons of, and the synergies between, the various DCOP algorithm components clear
