Analyzing Networks of Issue Reports
Completely analyzed and closed issue reports in software development projects, particularly in the development of safety-critical systems, often carry important information about issue-related change locations. These locations may be in the source code, as well as traces to test cases affected by the issue, and related design and requirements documents. In order to help developers analyze new issues, knowledge about issue clones and duplicates, as well as other relations between the new issue and existing issue reports would be useful. This paper analyses, in an exploratory study, issue reports contained in two Issue Management Systems (IMS) containing approximately 20.000 issue reports. The purpose of the analysis is to gain a better understanding of relationships between issue reports in IMSs. We found that link-mining explicit references can reveal complex networks of issue reports. Furthermore, we found that textual similarity analysis might have the potential to complement the explicitly signaled links by recommending additional relations. In line with work in other fields, links between software artifacts have a potential to improve search and navigation in large software engineering projects
The impact of central government steering and local network dynamics on the performance of mandated service delivery networks: the case of the Primary Health Care networks in Flanders
This paper focuses on the impact of central – local relations on the performance of local service delivery networks set up by central government. Analyzing network literature leaves us with some questions about the impact of coordination strategies of central government as a possible determinant of network-level effectiveness for this type of network and the possible interaction between central government coordination (as part of the network context) and internal network dynamics and the combined effects hereof on the effectiveness of mandated service delivery networks in particular. Our analysis shows that both levels are important to explain the outcomes of the Primary Health Care networks in Flanders. Our study also leads to some important observations about the meaning of ‘central government coordination’ in this context
True scale-free networks hidden by finite size effects
We analyze about two hundred naturally occurring networks with distinct
dynamical origins to formally test whether the commonly assumed hypothesis of
an underlying scale-free structure is generally viable. This has recently been
questioned on the basis of statistical testing of the validity of power law
distributions of network degrees by contrasting real data. Specifically, we
analyze by finite-size scaling analysis the datasets of real networks to check
whether purported departures from the power law behavior are due to the
finiteness of the sample size. In this case, power laws would be recovered in
the case of progressively larger cutoffs induced by the size of the sample. We
find that a large number of the networks studied follow a finite size scaling
hypothesis without any self-tuning. This is the case of biological protein
interaction networks, technological computer and hyperlink networks, and
informational networks in general. Marked deviations appear in other cases,
especially infrastructure and transportation but also social networks. We
conclude that underlying scale invariance properties of many naturally
occurring networks are extant features often clouded by finite-size effects due
to the nature of the sample data
The Citation Field of Evolutionary Economics
Evolutionary economics has developed into an academic field of its own,
institutionalized around, amongst others, the Journal of Evolutionary Economics
(JEE). This paper analyzes the way and extent to which evolutionary economics
has become an interdisciplinary journal, as its aim was: a journal that is
indispensable in the exchange of expert knowledge on topics and using
approaches that relate naturally with it. Analyzing citation data for the
relevant academic field for the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, we use
insights from scientometrics and social network analysis to find that, indeed,
the JEE is a central player in this interdisciplinary field aiming mostly at
understanding technological and regional dynamics. It does not, however, link
firmly with the natural sciences (including biology) nor to management
sciences, entrepreneurship, and organization studies. Another journal that
could be perceived to have evolutionary acumen, the Journal of Economic Issues,
does relate to heterodox economics journals and is relatively more involved in
discussing issues of firm and industry organization. The JEE seems most keen to
develop theoretical insights
Data Innovation for International Development: An overview of natural language processing for qualitative data analysis
Availability, collection and access to quantitative data, as well as its
limitations, often make qualitative data the resource upon which development
programs heavily rely. Both traditional interview data and social media
analysis can provide rich contextual information and are essential for
research, appraisal, monitoring and evaluation. These data may be difficult to
process and analyze both systematically and at scale. This, in turn, limits the
ability of timely data driven decision-making which is essential in fast
evolving complex social systems. In this paper, we discuss the potential of
using natural language processing to systematize analysis of qualitative data,
and to inform quick decision-making in the development context. We illustrate
this with interview data generated in a format of micro-narratives for the UNDP
