    LTE Optimization and Resource Management in Wireless Heterogeneous Networks

    Mobile communication technology is evolving with a great pace. The development of the Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile system by 3GPP is one of the milestones in this direction. This work highlights a few areas in the LTE radio access network where the proposed innovative mechanisms can substantially improve overall LTE system performance. In order to further extend the capacity of LTE networks, an integration with the non-3GPP networks (e.g., WLAN, WiMAX etc.) is also proposed in this work. Moreover, it is discussed how bandwidth resources should be managed in such heterogeneous networks. The work has purposed a comprehensive system architecture as an overlay of the 3GPP defined SAE architecture, effective resource management mechanisms as well as a Linear Programming based analytical solution for the optimal network resource allocation problem. In addition, alternative computationally efficient heuristic based algorithms have also been designed to achieve near-optimal performance

    Traffic modelling in WLANs and cellular networks.

    Over the past several years there has been a considerable amount of research in the field of traffic modelling for WLANs and Cellular Networks as well as the integration of these networks. To date, the focus of published work has been largely on the operation of delay sensitive calls. Because the voice calls are no longer the only service in wireless and cellular systems, multi-service traffic networks now consist of integrated services with distinctive Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Therefore, a number of different schemes have been proposed to deal with this problem. Most of these schemes only consider mobility and multi-service traffic characteristics. However, few studies have considered the impact of buffering of voice calls in integrated voice and data services. Therefore, we aim to make a critical investigation of existing traffic models and offer generic traffic schemes for WLAN and Cellular networks in order to analyse the impact of buffering of voice calls in hybrid networks. For this purpose, an analytical model for performance evaluation of a single server network with voice and data traffic is considered. In this system, voice is given priority but can be buffered in a limited way. The analysis shows that this approach can be used in fast mobile systems

    Real-Time Misbehavior Detection in IEEE 802.11e Based WLANs

    The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) specification in the IEEE 802.11e standard supports heterogeneous backoff parameters and arbitration inter-frame space (AIFS), which makes a selfish node easy to manipulate these parameters and misbehave. In this case, the network-wide fairness cannot be achieved any longer. Many existing misbehavior detectors, primarily designed for legacy IEEE 802.11 networks, become inapplicable in such a heterogeneous network configuration. In this paper, we propose a novel real-time hybrid-share (HS) misbehavior detector for IEEE 802.11e based wireless local area networks (WLANs). The detector keeps updating its state based on every successful transmission and makes detection decisions by comparing its state with a threshold. We develop mathematical analysis of the detector performance in terms of both false positive rate and average detection rate. Numerical results show that the proposed detector can effectively detect both contention window based and AIFS based misbehavior with only a short detection window.Comment: Accepted to IEEE Globecom 201

    A Novel Voice Priority Queue (VPQ) Schedule and Algorithm for VoIP over WLAN Network

    The VoIP deployment on Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), which is based on IEEE 802.11 standards, is increasing. Currently, many schedulers have been introduced such as Weighted Fair Queueing (WFQ), Strict Priority (SP) General processor sharing (GPS), Deficit Round Robin (DRR), and Contention-Aware Temporally fair Scheduling (CATS). Unfortunately, the current scheduling techniques have some drawbacks on real-time applications and therefore will not be able to handle the VoIP packets in a proper way. The objective of this research is to propose a new scheduler system model for the VoIP application named final stage of Voice Priority Queue (VPQ) scheduler. The scheduler system model is to ensure efficiency by producing a higher throughput and fairness for VoIP packets. In this paper, only the final Stage of the VPQ packet scheduler and its algorithm are presented. Simulation topologies for VoIP traffic were implemented and analyzed using the Network Simulator (NS-2). The results show that this method can achieve a better and more accurate VoIP quality throughput and fairness index over WLANs
