    Architectures for RF Frequency synthesizers

    Frequency synthesizers are an essential building block of RF communication products. They can be found in traditional consumer products, in personal communication systems, and in optical communication equipment. Since frequency synthesizers are used in many different applications, different performance aspects may need to be considered in each case. The main body of the text describes a conceptual framework for analyzing the performance of PLL frequency synthesizers, and presents optimization procedures for the different performance aspects. The analysis of the PLL properties is performed with the use of the open-loop bandwidth and phase margin concepts, to enable the influence of higher-order poles to be taken into account from the beginning of the design process. The theoretical system analysis is complemented by descriptions of innovative system and building block architectures, by circuit implementations in bipolar and CMOS technologies, and by measurement results.     Testing microelectronic biofluidic systems

    According to the 2005 International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors, the integration of emerging nondigital CMOS technologies will require radically different test methods, posing a major challenge for designers and test engineers. One such technology is microelectronic fluidic (MEF) arrays, which have rapidly gained importance in many biological, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. The advantages of these systems, such as operation speed, use of very small amounts of liquid, on-board droplet detection, signal conditioning, and vast digital signal processing, make them very promising. However, testable design of these devices in a mass-production environment is still in its infancy, hampering their low-cost introduction to the market.     Assessment of the Impact of PV-Systems for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development: The Case of Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia

    Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems have shown their potential in rural electrification projects around the Wolaita Zone, especially concerning Solar Home Systems (SHS). With continuing price decreases of PV systems, other applications are becoming economically attractive and growing experience is gained with the use of PV in such areas as social and communal services, agriculture and other productive activities, which can have a significant impact on rural development. There is still a lack of information, however, on the potential and limitations of such PV applications. The main objective of this study is, therefore, to contribute to a better understanding of the potential impact of PV systems on sustainable agriculture and rural development (SARD), especially concerning income-generating activities in Wolaita Zone. In addition, to identify the potential contribution of PV to rural development in order to gain further financial and political commitment for PV projects and programs and to design appropriate PV projects to study area. The preparation of the present study represents Solar photovoltaic systems, through their flexibility in use, offer unique chances for the energy sector to provide “packages” of energy services to remote rural areas such as for rural health care, education, communication, agriculture, lighting and water supply. It is hoped that this document contributes to the generation of ideas and discussions among the different institutions involved in providing these services to rural areas in Wolaita Zone to overcome affordability (cost of the technology relative to farmer income levels), awareness (knowledge about the technology), accessibility (options for obtaining the technology), and lack of customization (capacity to match farmer needs with technological solutions).     Characterization of non-intentional emissions from distributed energy resources up to 500 kHz: A case study in Spain

    Narrow Band Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) systems are currently used for smart metering and power quality monitoring as a part of the Smart Grid (SG) concept. However, non-intentional emissions generated by the devices connected to the grid may sometimes disturb the communications and isolate metering equipment. Though some research works have been recently developed to characterize these emissions, most of them have been limited to frequencies below 150 kHz and they are mainly focused on in-house electronic appliances and lightning devices. As NB-PLC can also be allocated in higher frequencies up to 500 kHz, there is still a lack of analysis in this frequency range, especially for emissions from Distributed Energy Resources (DERs). The identification and characterization of the emissions is essential to develop solutions that avoid a negative impact on the proper performance of NB-PLC. In this work, the non-intentional emissions of different types of DERs composing a representative microgrid have been measured in the 35–500 kHz frequency range and analyzed both in time and frequency domains. Different working conditions and coupling and commutation procedures to mains are considered in the analysis. Results are then compared to the limits recommended by regulatory bodies for spurious emissions from communication systems in this frequency band, as no specific limits for DERs have been established. Field measurements show clear differences in the characteristics of non-intentional emissions for different devices, working conditions and coupling procedures and for frequencies below and above 150 kHz. Results of this study demonstrate that a further characterization of the potential emissions from the different types of DERs connected to the grid is required in order to guarantee current and future applications based on NB-PLC.This work has been financially supported in part by the Basque Government (Elkartek program)

    Is there a large-country advantage in high-tech?

    High-tech is a commonly used catch-word for industries that use a relatively large share of their resources on R&D and develop many new products and processes. It is a widely held view that high- tech is good for growth, and that countries that succeed in high- tech industry perform well. Schumpeterian theory, as well as the more recent “new growth” theories, are often quoted in support of this view. However, the “new growth” theories also suggest that large countries are more likely than small ones to succeed in high-tech. This paper explores empirically the factors behind success or failure in high-tech industry for a sample of OECD countries from the 1960s to the 1980s. It is concluded that although there exists a group of high-tech industries for which the scale of the country seems to matter a lot, this does not extend to all industries where R&D and innovation are important. However, cost competition tends to be more severe in those industries where small countries can compete on equal terms. Thus, small countries do to some extent face a greater challenge in high-tech than large countries
