Digital libraries on an iPod: Beyond the client-server model

    Get PDF
This paper describes an experimental system that enhanced an iPod with digital library capabilities. Using the open source digital library software Greenstone as a base, this paper more specifically maps out the technical steps necessary to achieve this, along with an account of our subsequent experimentation. This included command-line usage of Greenstone's basic runtime system on the device, augmenting the iPod’s main interactive menu-driven application to include searching and hierarchical browsing of digital library collections stored locally, and a selection of "launcher" applications for target documents such as text files, images and audio. Media rich applications for digital stories and collaging were also developed. We also configured the iPod to run as a web server to provide digital library content to others over a network, effectively turning the traditional mobile client-server upsidedown

'The Coolest Way to Watch Movie Trailers in the World': Trailers in the Digital Age

    Get PDF
At a time of uncertainty over film and television texts being transferred online and on to portable media players, this article examines one of the few visual texts that exist comfortably on multiple screen technologies: the trailer. Adopted as an early cross-media text, the trailer now sits across cinema, television, home video, the internet, games consoles, mobile phones and iPods. Exploring the aesthetic and structural changes the trailer has undergone in its journey from the cinema to the iPod screen, the article focuses on the new mobility of these trailers, the shrinking screen size, and how audience participation with these texts has influenced both trailer production and distribution techniques. Exploring these texts, and their technological display, reveals how modern distribution techniques have created a shifting and interactive relationship between film studio and audience

iPad2 Logical Acquisition: Automated or Manual Examination?

    Get PDF
Due to their usage increase worldwide, iPads are on the path of becoming key sources of digital evidence in criminal investigations. This research investigated the logical backup acquisition and examination of the iPad2 device using the Apple iTunes backup utility while manually examining the backup data (manual examination) and automatically parsing the backup data (Lantern software - automated examination). The results indicate that a manual examination of the logical backup structure from iTunes reveals more digital evidence, especially if installed application data is required for an investigation. However, the researchers note that if a quick triage is needed of an iOS device, then automated tools provide a faster method for obtaining digital evidence from an iOS device. The results also illustrate that the file names in the backup folders have changed between iOS 3 and iOS 4. Lastly, the authors note the need for an extensible software framework for future automated logical iPad examination tools. Keywords: iPad, forensics, logical backup, iOS, manual examination

    IOS Device Forensics

Many people today have an iPhone, iPad or iPod. Not many would realize that valuable information is stored on these devices. When a crime occurs, an iOS Device could hold key information to help solve said crime that criminals are not aware are present on the device. This can include GPS information as well as application history on the device itself. The project I wish to do and complete is to create a class where students can learn the about iOS Forensics. Student will be able to learn the basics of an iDevice, as well as how to work with forensics tools to acquire the information in an efficient manner. The class will also introduce forensic tools that can be used with iOS Devices. These tools can include Open Source and Commercial forensic tools. This class will be offered to both Graduates and Undergraduates at Governors State University. It will act as a beginner’s class, for individuals who want to learn more and have an interest in iOS Forensics

Does use of touch screen computer technology improve classroom engagement in children?

    Get PDF
Many studies have shown that the use of technology in the classroom may influence pupil engagement. Despite the recent widespread use of tablet technology, however, very little research has been carried out into their use in a primary school setting. We investigated the use of tablet computers, specifically Apple’s ‘iPad’, in an upper primary school setting with regard to children’s engagement. Cognitive, emotional and general engagement was higher in lessons based on iPads than those which were not. There was no difference in behavioral engagement. Of particular significance was the increase in engagement seen in boys, which resulted in their engagement levels increasing to levels comparable to those seen in girls. These findings suggest that tablet technology has potential as a tool in the classroom setting
