Introduction
Husserlâs philosophy, by the usual account, evolved through three stages: 1. development of an anti-psychologistic, objective foundation of logic and mathematics, rooted in Brentanian descriptive psychology; 2. development of a new discipline of "phenomenology" founded on a metaphysical position dubbed "transcendental idealism"; transformation of phenomenology from a form of methodological solipsism into a phenomenology of intersubjectivity and ultimately (in his Crisis of 1936) into an ontology of the life-world, embracing the social worlds of culture and history. We show that this story of three revolutions can provide at best a preliminary orientation, and that Husserl was constantly expanding and revising his philosophical system, integrating views in phenomenology, ontology, epistemology and logic with views on the nature and tasks of philosophy and science as well as on the nature of culture and the world in ways that reveal more common elements than violent shifts of direction. We argue further that Husserl is a seminal figure in the evolution from traditional philosophy to the characteristic philosophical concerns of the late twentieth century: concerns with representation and intentionality and with problems at the borderlines of the philosophy of mind, ontology, and cognitive science
Some Ontological Principles for Designing Upper Level Lexical Resources
The purpose of this paper is to explore some semantic problems related to the
use of linguistic ontologies in information systems, and to suggest some
organizing principles aimed to solve such problems. The taxonomic structure of
current ontologies is unfortunately quite complicated and hard to understand,
especially for what concerns the upper levels. I will focus here on the problem
of ISA overloading, which I believe is the main responsible of these
difficulties. To this purpose, I will carefully analyze the ontological nature
of the categories used in current upper-level structures, considering the
necessity of splitting them according to more subtle distinctions or the

A Trope Theoretical Analysis of Relational Inherence
The trope bundle theories of objects are capable of analyzing monadic inherence (objects having tropes), which is one of their main advantage. However, the best current trope theoretical account of relational tropes, namely, the relata specific view leaves relational inherence (a relational trope relating two or more entities) primitive. This article presents the first trope theoretical analysis of relational inherence by generalizing the trope theoretical analysis of inherence to relational tropes. The analysis reduces the holding of relational inherence to the obtaining of certain other facts about entities of the trope theoretical category system. Moreover, I show that the analysis can deal with asymmetric and non-symmetric relations by assuming that all relation-like tropes are quantities. Finally, I provide an account of the spatial location of tropes in the difficult case in which tropes contribute to determining of the location of other entities
Comparison of relativity theories with observer-independent scales of both velocity and length/mass
We consider the two most studied proposals of relativity theories with
observer-independent scales of both velocity and length/mass: the one discussed
by Amelino-Camelia as illustrative example for the original proposal
(gr-qc/0012051) of theories with two relativistic invariants, and an
alternative more recently proposed by Magueijo and Smolin (hep-th/0112090). We
show that these two relativistic theories are much more closely connected than
it would appear on the basis of a naive analysis of their original
formulations. In particular, in spite of adopting a rather different formal
description of the deformed boost generators, they end up assigning the same
dependence of momentum on rapidity, which can be described as the core feature
of these relativistic theories. We show that this observation can be used to
clarify the concepts of particle mass, particle velocity, and
energy-momentum-conservation rules in these theories with two relativistic

A Graph Rewriting Approach for Transformational Design of Digital Systems
Transformational design integrates design and verification. It combines âcorrectness by constructionâ and design creativity by the use of pre-proven behaviour preserving transformations as design steps. The formal aspects of this methodology are hidden in the transformations. A constraint is the availability of a design representation with a compositional formal semantics. Graph representations are useful design representations because of their visualisation of design information. In this paper graph rewriting theory, as developed in the last twenty years in mathematics, is shown to be a useful basis for a formal framework for transformational design. The semantic aspects of graphs which are no part of graph rewriting theory are included by the use of attributed graphs. Introduction to the Douglass C. North Memorial Issue
This is the accepted version of the following article: Geoffrey M. Hodgson, âIntroduction to the Douglass C. North memorial issueâ, Journal of Institutional Economics, (early view) 1 December 2016, which has been published in final form at DOI: https://doi.org/10.1017/S1744137416000400 ©Cambridge UniversityPress 2016This introduction considers the highly influential contribution of Douglass C. North to economic history and institutional economics, as it developed from the 1960s until his death in 2015. It sketches the evolution of his arguments concerning the roles of institutions, organizations and human agency. Northâs conception of the economic actor became progressively more sophisticated, by acknowledging the role of ideology and adopting insights from cognitive science. Eventually he abandoned the proposition that institutions are generally efficient, to propose instead that sub-optimal institutional forms could persist. A few noted criticisms of Northâs work are also considered here, ranging from those which are arguably off the mark, to others that retain some force. The contributions to this memorial issue are outlined at the end of this introduction.Peer reviewe
World-Sheets from N=4 Super Yang-Mills
We examine whether the free energy of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) in
four dimensions corresponds to the partition function of the AdS_5 x S^5
superstring when corresponding operators are inserted into both theories. We
obtain a formal free energy of N=4 U(N) SYM in four dimensions generated by the
Feynman graph expansion to all orders of the 't Hooft coupling expansion with
arbitrary N. This free energy is written as the sum over discretized closed
two-dimensional surfaces that are identified with the world-sheets of the
string. We compare this free energy with a formal partition function of the
discretized AdS_5 x S^5 superstring with the kappa-symmetry fixed in the
killing gauge and in the expansion corresponding to the weak 't Hooft coupling
expansion in the SYM. We find common properties on both sides, although further
studies are required to obtain a more precise comparison. Our result suggests a
mechanism for how the world-sheet appears dynamically from N=4 SYM, thus
enabling us to derive how the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring is reproduced in the
