    MULTI AGENT-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL LANDSCAPE (MABEL) - AN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SIMULATION MODEL: SOME EARLY ASSESSMENTS

    The Multi Agent-Based Environmental Landscape model (MABEL) introduces a Distributed Artificial Intelligence (DAI) systemic methodology, to simulate land use and transformation changes over time and space. Computational agents represent abstract relations among geographic, environmental, human and socio-economic variables, with respect to land transformation pattern changes. A multi-agent environment is developed providing task-nonspecific problem-solving abilities, flexibility on achieving goals and representing existing relations observed in real-world scenarios, and goal-based efficiency. Intelligent MABEL agents acquire spatial expressions and perform specific tasks demonstrating autonomy, environmental interactions, communication and cooperation, reactivity and proactivity, reasoning and learning capabilities. Their decisions maximize both task-specific marginal utility for their actions and joint, weighted marginal utility for their time-stepping. Agent behavior is achieved by personalizing a dynamic utility-based knowledge base through sequential GIS filtering, probability-distributed weighting, joint probability Bayesian correlational weighting, and goal-based distributional properties, applied to socio-economic and behavioral criteria. First-order logics, heuristics and appropriation of time-step sequences employed, provide a simulation-able environment, capable of re-generating space-time evolution of the agents.Environmental Economics and Policy,

    Principles and Concepts of Agent-Based Modelling for Developing Geospatial Simulations

    The aim of this paper is to outline fundamental concepts and principles of the Agent-Based Modelling (ABM) paradigm, with particular reference to the development of geospatial simulations. The paper begins with a brief definition of modelling, followed by a classification of model types, and a comment regarding a shift (in certain circumstances) towards modelling systems at the individual-level. In particular, automata approaches (e.g. Cellular Automata, CA, and ABM) have been particularly popular, with ABM moving to the fore. A definition of agents and agent-based models is given; identifying their advantages and disadvantages, especially in relation to geospatial modelling. The potential use of agent-based models is discussed, and how-to instructions for developing an agent-based model are provided. Types of simulation / modelling systems available for ABM are defined, supplemented with criteria to consider before choosing a particular system for a modelling endeavour. Information pertaining to a selection of simulation / modelling systems (Swarm, MASON, Repast, StarLogo, NetLogo, OBEUS, AgentSheets and AnyLogic) is provided, categorised by their licensing policy (open source, shareware / freeware and proprietary systems). The evaluation (i.e. verification, calibration, validation and analysis) of agent-based models and their output is examined, and noteworthy applications are discussed.Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are a particularly useful medium for representing model input and output of a geospatial nature. However, GIS are not well suited to dynamic modelling (e.g. ABM). In particular, problems of representing time and change within GIS are highlighted. Consequently, this paper explores the opportunity of linking (through coupling or integration / embedding) a GIS with a simulation / modelling system purposely built, and therefore better suited to supporting the requirements of ABM. This paper concludes with a synthesis of the discussion that has proceeded.     Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    Agent Based Modeling in Land-Use and Land-Cover Change Studies

    Agent based models (ABM) for land use and cover change (LUCC) holds the promise to provide new insight into the processes and patterns of the human and biophysical interactions in ways that have never been explored. Advances in computer technology make it possible to run almost infinite numbers of simulations with multiple heterogeneously shaped actors that reciprocally interact via vertical and horizontal power lines on various levels. Based upon an extensive literature review the basic components for such exercises are explored and discussed. This resulted in a systematic representation of these components consisting of: (1) Spatial static input data, (2) Actor and Actor-group static input data, (3) Spatial dynamic input, (4) Actor and Actor-group dynamic input data, (5) the model with the rules describing the rules, (6) Spatial static output, (7) Actor and Actor-group static output, (8) Dynamic output of Actor behaviour changes, (9) Dynamic output of actor-group behavioural changes, (10) Dynamic output of spatial patterns, (11) Dynamic output of temporal patterns. This representation proves to be epistemologically useful in the analysis of the relationships between the ABM LUCC components. In this paper, this representation is also used to enumerate the strengths and limitations of agent based modelling in LUCC

Much of the changes deemed now revolutionary are originated in a long and converging progress of manufacturing science and technology, as well as of computer science, information and communication technologies. One of the pioneers and influential thinkers of production engineering who paved the way towards cyber-physical manufacturing was unquestionably Professor Kanji Ueda (1946-2015). After a rigorous review of the submissions by experts, fourteen articles concerning sustainable living and development are published in this Special Issue, written by authors sharing their expertise and approaches to the concept and application of sustainability in their fields. The fourteen contributions to this special issue can be categorized into four groups, depending on the issues that they address.     A Creative Exploration of the Use of Intelligent Agents in Spatial Narrative Structures

    This thesis is an interdisciplinary study of authoring tools for creating spatial narrative structures– exposing the relationship between artists, the tools they use, and the experiences they create. It is a research-creation enterprise resulting in the creation of a new authoring tool. A prototype collaborative tool for authoring spatial narratives used at the Land|Slide: Possible Futures public art exhibit in Markham, Ontario 2013 is described. Using narrative analysis of biographical information a cultural context for authoring and experiencing spatial narrative structures is discussed. The biographical information of artists using digital technologies is posited as a context framing for usability design heuristics. The intersection of intelligent agents and spatial narrative structures provide a future scenario by which to assess the suitability of the approach outlined in this study

    Presuppositions and problems of scientific and humanistic approaches to urban planning

    This thesis sets out to explore some of the ways in which the methods of inquiry employed in urban planning tend to guide the perspective taken on substantive concerns in that field. It endeavours to accomplish this task by showing that there are certain underlying presuppositions that are implicitly rather than explicitly accepted by making use of any method of inquiry, but focuses on aspects of models of social/spatial phenomena as these are employed in urban planning as instruments for prediction and control rather than copies of segments of reality—either making existential claims about it or postulating structural isomorphisms.Urban planning is taken to be a "social practice" within which thought and action are mutually determined through continuous dialectical processes involving the planners and those who are being investigated and affected by plans. The strong presence of a knowledge component in the thought/action continuum of planning makes relevant a range of ontological and epistemological problems linked with the view taken of science and its methods and procedures of inquiry, and with the way the world of man and society and its manifestation in urban life is looked at. It is argued that the way in which society is theorised about has implications for the methods employed in its study and hence for the planning process seen as a process of inquiry.To the extent that alternative theoretical perspectives on societyare possible — indeed,three such perspectives are identified and explored: naturalism, interpretative or humanistic approaches, critical theory of society — there are corresponding approaches to "social practice" including the mode of planning to be adopted in the regulation of societal affairs in the city. Technological and humanistic approaches to urban planning are distinguished, the latter comprising interactionist and critical modes. The technological model derives its strength from a policy science approach which is informed by a view of science akin to positivistic naturalism. It introduces a range of sharp divisions into inquiry — theory from observation, method from substantive content, values and norms from facts as the unassailable foundations of empirical knowledge, ends from means — which are taken to be unacceptable at least in the realm of ethically relevant action that planning consists ofRejection of this conception of a technological planning approach is advocated but this does not necessarily entail rejection of scientific approaches to planning as a whole. Rather, the strictures concern the particular view of science, and its methods and procedures, which informs the technological model. It is that view of the "logic of science" which is held to impose unnecessary restrictions on what is to count as legitimate knowledge of the world, and its replacement seems particularly urgent. The conceptualisations that are to be found in the "newer" philosophy of science are taken to provide plausible alternatives to the "old empiricism", though they do not afford as unified a view of knowledge as may appear at first glance. Such views of science, however, render the application of scientific methods and procedures in urban planning much more credible.The view of knowledge which the author finds most convincing is one that recognises the important role played in it by human contribution; accepts the many culturally given elements in any cognitive endeavour; acknowledges the strong presence of metaphorical elements in theories and models of aspects of reality; concedes that there are alternative equally valid ways of conceptualising experience and that assessment of their validity as correspondence with "objective" facts may have to take second place in the light of considerations such as convenience, instrumental effects, or aesthetic criteria; regards a strict separation of the realm of theory from the realm of observation as untenable; and does not suffer epistemological shock from any consequences of relativism that such views might entail. For this is accepted as part of man's epistemological predicament. Such a perspective on knowledge would have implications for the proliferation of theories and models accounting for the same set of phenomena, and for pluralism and tolerance in goals and methods of inquiry; and implications for the way in which knowledge is to be related to "practice" in the realm of ethics, politics, and planning
