    Biased compensation recursive least squares-based threshold algorithm for time-delay rational models via redundant rule

    © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media B.V., part of Springer Nature. This paper develops a biased compensation recursive least squares-based threshold algorithm for a time-delay rational model. The time-delay rational model is transformed into an augmented model by using the redundant rule, and then, a recursive least squares algorithm is proposed to estimate the parameters of the augmented model. Since the output of the augmented model is correlated with the noise, a biased compensation method is derived to eliminate the bias of the parameter estimates. Furthermore, based on the structures of the augmented model parameter vector and the rational model parameter vector, the unknown time delay can be computed by using a threshold given in prior. A simulated example is used to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm

    Bias compensation recursive algorithm for dual-rate rational models

In dual-rate rational systems, some output data are missing (unmeasurable) to make the traditional recursive least squares (RLS) parameter estimation algorithms invalid. In order to overcome this difficulty, this study develops a bias compensation RLS algorithm for estimating the missing outputs and then the model parameters. The algorithm based on auxiliary model and particle filter has four steps: (i) to establish an auxiliary model to estimate unmeasurable outputs, (ii) to compensate bias induced by correlated noise, (iii) to add a filter to improve estimation accuracy of the unmeasurable outputs and (iv) to obtain an unbiased parameter estimation. Three examples are selected for simulation demonstrations to give further guarantees on the usefulness of the proposed algorithms. The comparative studies show that the bias compensation RLS is more effective for such systems with dual-rate input and output data

    Control of complex nonlinear dynamic rational systems

Nonlinear rational systems/models, also known as total nonlinear dynamic systems/models, in an expression of a ratio of two polynomials, have roots in describing general engineering plants and chemical reaction processes. The major challenge issue in the control of such a system is the control input embedded in its denominator polynomials. With extensive searching, it could not find any systematic approach in designing this class of control systems directly from its model structure. This study expands the U-model-based approach to establish a platform for the first layer of feedback control and the second layer of adaptive control of the nonlinear rational systems, which, in principle, separates control system design (without involving a plant model) and controller output determination (with solving inversion of the plant U-model). This procedure makes it possible to achieve closed-loop control of nonlinear systems with linear performance (transient response and steady-state accuracy). For the conditions using the approach, this study presents the associated stability and convergence analyses. Simulation studies are performed to show off the characteristics of the developed procedure in numerical tests and to give the general guidelines for applications

    Pioneers of Influence Propagation in Social Networks

    With the growing importance of corporate viral marketing campaigns on online social networks, the interest in studies of influence propagation through networks is higher than ever. In a viral marketing campaign, a firm initially targets a small set of pioneers and hopes that they would influence a sizeable fraction of the population by diffusion of influence through the network. In general, any marketing campaign might fail to go viral in the first try. As such, it would be useful to have some guide to evaluate the effectiveness of the campaign and judge whether it is worthy of further resources, and in case the campaign has potential, how to hit upon a good pioneer who can make the campaign go viral. In this paper, we present a diffusion model developed by enriching the generalized random graph (a.k.a. configuration model) to provide insight into these questions. We offer the intuition behind the results on this model, rigorously proved in Blaszczyszyn & Gaurav(2013), and illustrate them here by taking examples of random networks having prototypical degree distributions - Poisson degree distribution, which is commonly used as a kind of benchmark, and Power Law degree distribution, which is normally used to approximate the real-world networks. On these networks, the members are assumed to have varying attitudes towards propagating the information. We analyze three cases, in particular - (1) Bernoulli transmissions, when a member influences each of its friend with probability p; (2) Node percolation, when a member influences all its friends with probability p and none with probability 1-p; (3) Coupon-collector transmissions, when a member randomly selects one of his friends K times with replacement. We assume that the configuration model is the closest approximation of a large online social network, when the information available about the network is very limited. The key insight offered by this study from a firm's perspective is regarding how to evaluate the effectiveness of a marketing campaign and do cost-benefit analysis by collecting relevant statistical data from the pioneers it selects. The campaign evaluation criterion is informed by the observation that if the parameters of the underlying network and the campaign effectiveness are such that the campaign can indeed reach a significant fraction of the population, then the set of good pioneers also forms a significant fraction of the population. Therefore, in such a case, the firms can even adopt the naive strategy of repeatedly picking and targeting some number of pioneers at random from the population. With this strategy, the probability of them picking a good pioneer will increase geometrically fast with the number of tries

    An enhanced linear Kalman filter (EnLKF) algorithm for parameter estimation of nonlinear rational models

    In this study, an enhanced Kalman Filter formulation for linear in the parameters models with inherent correlated errors is proposed to build up a new framework for nonlinear rational model parameter estimation. The mechanism of linear Kalman filter (LKF) with point data processing is adopted to develop a new recursive algorithm. The novelty of the enhanced linear Kalman filter (EnLKF in short and distinguished from extended Kalman filter (EKF)) is that it is not formulated from the routes of extended Kalman Filters (to approximate nonlinear models by linear approximation around operating points through Taylor expansion) and also it includes LKF as its subset while linear models have no correlated errors in regressor terms. No matter linear or nonlinear models in representing a system from measured data, it is very common to have correlated errors between measurement noise and regression terms, the EnLKF provides a general solution for unbiased model parameter estimation without extra cost to convert model structure. The associated convergence is analysed to provide a quantitative indicator for applications and reference for further research. Three simulated examples are selected to bench-test the performance of the algorithm. In addition, the style of conducting numerical simulation studies provides a user-friendly step by step procedure for the readers/users with interest in their ad hoc applications. It should be noted that this approach is fundamentally different from those using linearisation to approximate nonlinear models and then conduct state/parameter estimate

    Concurrently coupled solid shell-based adaptive multiscale method for fracture

Pago por publicar en abierto.A solid shell-based adaptive atomistic–continuum numerical method is herein proposed to simulate complex crack growth patterns in thin-walled structures. A hybrid solid shell formulation relying on the combined use of the enhanced assumed strain (EAS) and the assumed natural strain (ANS) methods has been considered to efficiently model the material in thin structures at the continuum level. The phantom node method (PNM) is employed to model the discontinuities in the bulk. The discontinuous solid shell element is then concurrently coupled with a molecular statics model placed around the crack tip. The coupling between the coarse scale and the fine scale is realized through the use of ghost atoms, whose positions are interpolated from the coarse scale solution and enforced as boundary conditions to the fine scale model. In the proposed numerical scheme, the fine scale region is adaptively enlarged as the crack propagates and the region behind the crack tip is adaptively coarsened in order to reduce the computation costs. An energy criterion is used to detect the crack tip location. All the atomistic simulations are carried out using the LAMMPS software. A computational framework has been developed in MATLAB to trigger LAMMPS through system command. This allows a two way interaction between the coarse and fine scales in MATLAB platform, where the boundary conditions to the fine region are extracted from the coarse scale, and the crack tip location from the atomistic model is transferred back to the continuum scale. The developed framework has been applied to study crack growth in the energy minimization problems. Inspired by the influence of fracture on current–voltage characteristics of thin Silicon photovoltaic cells, the cubic diamond lattice structure of Silicon is used to model the material in the fine scale region, whilst the Tersoff potential function is employed to model the atom–atom interactions.     Sparse Iterative Learning Control with Application to a Wafer Stage: Achieving Performance, Resource Efficiency, and Task Flexibility

    Trial-varying disturbances are a key concern in Iterative Learning Control (ILC) and may lead to inefficient and expensive implementations and severe performance deterioration. The aim of this paper is to develop a general framework for optimization-based ILC that allows for enforcing additional structure, including sparsity. The proposed method enforces sparsity in a generalized setting through convex relaxations using â„“1\ell_1 norms. The proposed ILC framework is applied to the optimization of sampling sequences for resource efficient implementation, trial-varying disturbance attenuation, and basis function selection. The framework has a large potential in control applications such as mechatronics, as is confirmed through an application on a wafer stage.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figure
