QCMATH: Mathematica modules for electronic structure calculations

We introduce \textsc{qcmath}, a user-friendly quantum chemistry software tailored for electronic structure calculations, implemented using the Wolfram Mathematica language and available at \url{https://github.com/LCPQ/qcmath}. This software, designed with accessibility in mind, takes advantage of the symbolic capabilities intrinsic to Mathematica. Its primary goal is to provide a supportive environment for newcomers to the field of quantum chemistry, enabling them to easily conceptualize, develop, and test their own ideas. The functionalities of \textsc{qcmath} encompass a broad spectrum of methods, catering to both ground- and excited-state calculations. We provide a comprehensive overview of these capabilities, complemented by essential theoretical insights. To facilitate ease of use, we offer an exhaustive blueprint of the software's architecture. Furthermore, we provide users with comprehensive guides, addressing both the operational aspects and the more intricate programming facets of \textsc{qcmath}.Comment: 9 page

Curated routes: the project of developing experiential tracks in sub-urban landscape

    Get PDF
The Curated Routes project reflects on the visiting routes’ ability to make apparent the internal characteristics of urban environments. The project’s name allude to the intellectual function of curation and the materiality of routes. Curate deals with the practice of arranging material –tangible or intangible- in a way that a new understanding of an area is revealed. The word routes refers to the linear associations that link places and guide movement. The Curated Routes aim to reinforce the development of bonding ties between people and urban environments by re-constructing the way we visit and explore a place. The overall goal of the project is to outline the conceptual guidelines of a visitors’ guide that could later be used for the development of the informatics model. The project follows the methodology that the context-aware routes apply, though particular attention is paid to the second phase of the process where an innovative approach is applied. The introduction of the “chronotope” filters enables us to “knit” the terrestrial route to a range of informative storylines, and hence to develop different interpretations of an urban environment

e-Counterfeit: a mobile-server platform for document counterfeit detection

This paper presents a novel application to detect counterfeit identity documents forged by a scan-printing operation. Texture analysis approaches are proposed to extract validation features from security background that is usually printed in documents as IDs or banknotes. The main contribution of this work is the end-to-end mobile-server architecture, which provides a service for non-expert users and therefore can be used in several scenarios. The system also provides a crowdsourcing mode so labeled images can be gathered, generating databases for incremental training of the algorithms.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

The evolving landscape of learning technology

    Get PDF
This paper provides an overview of the current and emerging issues in learning technology research, concentrating on structural issues such as infrastructure, policy and organizational context. It updates the vision of technology outlined by Squires’ (1999) concept of peripatetic electronic teachers (PETs) where Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) provide an enabling medium to allow teachers to act as freelance agents in a virtual world and reflects to what extent this vision has been realized The paper begins with a survey of some of the key areas of ICT development and provides a contextualizing framework for the area in terms of external agendas and policy drivers. It then focuses upon learning technology developments which have occurred in the last five years in the UK and offers a number of alternative taxonomies to describe this. The paper concludes with a discussion of the issues which arise from this work

Six decades of research on 2D materials: progress, dead ends, and new horizons

    Get PDF
The present paper guides the reader through six decades of research on 2D materials, thereby putting special focus on the use of these materials for electronic devices. It is shown that after a slow start and only little activity over many years, since 2004 the exploration of 2D materials advanced at an enormous pace. While some of the high expectations raised in the so-called golden era of graphene did not fulfil, other electronic applications for 2D materials that originally were not on the agenda gain increasing attention now. One of the main research topics in the field of 2D materials during the early 2000s was high-performance graphene transistors. This effort, however, led to a dead end due the consequences of the missing bandgap in graphene. On the other hand, the semiconducting 2D materials show potential for different device concepts including stacked-channel 2D nanosheet MOSFETs and 2D memristors. The former may become the transistor architecture of choice at the end of the CMOS roadmap and 2D memristors represent a promising device concept for future neuromorphic computing, a type of information processing that shows great potential for artificial intelligence applications where energy efficiency is a key requirement

Improving Knowledge Retrieval in Digital Libraries Applying Intelligent Techniques

    Get PDF
Nowadays an enormous quantity of heterogeneous and distributed information is stored in the digital University. Exploring online collections to find knowledge relevant to a user’s interests is a challenging work. The artificial intelligence and Semantic Web provide a common framework that allows knowledge to be shared and reused in an efficient way. In this work we propose a comprehensive approach for discovering E-learning objects in large digital collections based on analysis of recorded semantic metadata in those objects and the application of expert system technologies. We have used Case Based-Reasoning methodology to develop a prototype for supporting efficient retrieval knowledge from online repositories. We suggest a conceptual architecture for a semantic search engine. OntoUS is a collaborative effort that proposes a new form of interaction between users and digital libraries, where the latter are adapted to users and their surroundings

International Legal Collections at U.S. Academic Law School Libraries

    Get PDF
This study examines how law librarians are participating in the process of creating new fields of international legal research and training. It investigates the current state of international legal collections at twelve public and private U.S. academic law school libraries, illuminating in the process some of the significant shifts that characterize the nature of professional librarianship and information science in the twenty-first century. Included in the study is a discussion of the reference works, research guides, and databases that make up these international legal collections. This is followed by a brief assessment of the trends and challenges that librarians face who work in the field of professional legal education and scholarship
