Per-Core DVFS with Switched-Capacitor Converters for Energy Efficiency in Manycore Processors
Integrating multiple power converters on-chip improves energy efficiency of manycore architectures. Switched-capacitor (SC) dc-dc converters are compatible with conventional CMOS processes, but traditional implementations suffer from limited conversion efficiency. We propose a dynamic voltage and frequency scaling scheme with SC converters that achieves high converter efficiency by allowing the output voltage to ripple and having the processor core frequency track the ripple. Minimum core energy is achieved by hopping between different converter modes and tuning body-bias voltages. A multicore processor model based on a 28-nm technology shows conversion efficiencies of 90% along with over 25% improvement in the overall chip energy efficiency
Automated routing and control of silicon photonic switch fabrics
Automatic reconfiguration and feedback controlled routing is demonstrated in an 8×8 silicon photonic switch fabric based on Mach-Zehnder interferometers. The use of non-invasive Contactless Integrated Photonic Probes (CLIPPs) enables real-time monitoring of the state of each switching element individually. Local monitoring provides direct information on the routing path, allowing an easy sequential tuning and feedback controlled stabilization of the individual switching elements, thus making the switch fabric robust against thermal crosstalk, even in the absence of a cooling system for the silicon chip. Up to 24 CLIPPs are interrogated by a multichannel integrated ASIC wire-bonded to the photonic chip. Optical routing is demonstrated on simultaneous WDM input signals that are labelled directly on-chip by suitable pilot tones without affecting the quality of the signals. Neither preliminary circuit calibration nor lookup tables are required, being the proposed control scheme inherently insensible to channels power fluctuations
An Octave-Range, Watt-Level, Fully-Integrated CMOS Switching Power Mixer Array for Linearization and Back-Off-Efficiency Improvement
The power mixer array is presented as a novel power generation approach for non-constant envelope signals. It comprises several power mixer units that are dynamically turned on and off to improve the linearity and back-off efficiency. At the circuit level, the power mixer unit can operate as a switching amplifier to achieve high peak power efficiency. Additional circuit level linearization and back-off efficiency improvement techniques are also proposed. To demonstrate the feasibility of this idea, a fully-integrated octave-range CMOS power mixer array is implemented in a 130 nm CMOS process. It is operational between 1.2 GHz and 2.4 GHz and can generate an output power of +31.3 dBm into an external 50 Ω load with a PAE of 42% and a gain compression of only 0.4 dB at 1.8 GHz. It achieves a PAE of 25%, at an average output power of +26.4 dBm, and an EVM of 4.6% with a non-constant-envelope 16 QAM signal. It can also produce arbitrary signal levels down to -70 dBm of output power with the 16 QAM-modulated signal without any RF gain control circuit
Dynamic Power Management for Neuromorphic Many-Core Systems
This work presents a dynamic power management architecture for neuromorphic
many core systems such as SpiNNaker. A fast dynamic voltage and frequency
scaling (DVFS) technique is presented which allows the processing elements (PE)
to change their supply voltage and clock frequency individually and
autonomously within less than 100 ns. This is employed by the neuromorphic
simulation software flow, which defines the performance level (PL) of the PE
based on the actual workload within each simulation cycle. A test chip in 28 nm
SLP CMOS technology has been implemented. It includes 4 PEs which can be scaled
from 0.7 V to 1.0 V with frequencies from 125 MHz to 500 MHz at three distinct
PLs. By measurement of three neuromorphic benchmarks it is shown that the total
PE power consumption can be reduced by 75%, with 80% baseline power reduction
and a 50% reduction of energy per neuron and synapse computation, all while
maintaining temporary peak system performance to achieve biological real-time
operation of the system. A numerical model of this power management model is
derived which allows DVFS architecture exploration for neuromorphics. The
proposed technique is to be used for the second generation SpiNNaker
neuromorphic many core system
Future benefits and applications of intelligent on-board processing to VSAT services
The trends and roles of VSAT services in the year 2010 time frame are examined based on an overall network and service model for that period. An estimate of the VSAT traffic is then made and the service and general network requirements are identified. In order to accommodate these traffic needs, four satellite VSAT architectures based on the use of fixed or scanning multibeam antennas in conjunction with IF switching or onboard regeneration and baseband processing are suggested. The performance of each of these architectures is assessed and the key enabling technologies are identified
