Continuous time controller based on SMC and disturbance observer for piezoelectric actuators
Abstract – In this work, analog application for the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) to piezoelectric actuators (PEA) is presented. DSP application of the algorithm suffers from ADC and DAC conversions and mainly faces limitations in sampling time interval. Moreover piezoelectric actuators are known to have very large bandwidth close to the DSP operation frequency. Therefore, with the direct analog application, improvement of the performance and high frequency operation are expected. Design of an appropriate SMC together with a disturbance observer is suggested to have continuous control output and related experimental results for position tracking are presented with comparison of DSP and analog control application
Deep Learning for Audio Signal Processing
Given the recent surge in developments of deep learning, this article
provides a review of the state-of-the-art deep learning techniques for audio
signal processing. Speech, music, and environmental sound processing are
considered side-by-side, in order to point out similarities and differences
between the domains, highlighting general methods, problems, key references,
and potential for cross-fertilization between areas. The dominant feature
representations (in particular, log-mel spectra and raw waveform) and deep
learning models are reviewed, including convolutional neural networks, variants
of the long short-term memory architecture, as well as more audio-specific
neural network models. Subsequently, prominent deep learning application areas
are covered, i.e. audio recognition (automatic speech recognition, music
information retrieval, environmental sound detection, localization and
tracking) and synthesis and transformation (source separation, audio
enhancement, generative models for speech, sound, and music synthesis).
Finally, key issues and future questions regarding deep learning applied to
audio signal processing are identified.Comment: 15 pages, 2 pdf figure

Variable domain transformation for linear PAC analysis of mixed-signal systems
This paper describes a method to perform linear AC analysis on mixed-signal systems which appear strongly nonlinear in the voltage domain but are linear in other variable domains. Common circuits like phase/delay-locked loops and duty-cycle correctors fall into this category, since they are designed to be linear with respect to phases, delays, and duty-cycles of the input and output clocks, respectively. The method uses variable domain translators to change the variables to which the AC perturbation is applied and from which the AC response is measured. By utilizing the efficient periodic AC (PAC) analysis available in commercial RF simulators, the circuit’s linear transfer function in the desired variable domain can be characterized without relying on extensive transient simulations. Furthermore, the variable domain translators enable the circuits to be macromodeled as weakly-nonlinear systems in the chosen domain and then converted to voltage-domain models, instead of being modeled as strongly-nonlinear systems directly
Comparative Analysis Of Current Control Methods For Modular Multilevel Converters
Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) are power electronic converters comprised of a series connection of sub-modules. Their modular structure allows for the possibility to design high-voltage converters that are suitable for utility applications due to the modular fail-safe structure with reduced switching frequency requirements. Some areas of interesting research specific to the MMC topology include modulation techniques, control methods, capacitor voltage balancing strategies, and circulating current suppression control. This thesis presents the development of a predictive current control for MMCs that has the benefit of inherently reduced circulating currents within the converter’s phase units. Two other typical MMC current control strategies are implemented for comparison with the predictive current control.
The operation and modeling, multi-loop control design, and digital simulation of a MMC are presented using MATLAB/Simulink software. An effective control scheme is implemented using a cascade control approach, with an outer power controller and an inner current controller. The outer loop is implemented with a conventional synchronous proportional-integral (PI) controller. The inner loop is then implemented with PI, proportional resonant (PR), and predictive controllers and the controller error signal dynamics for each method are observed. The predictive arm-current controller is shown to have significantly reduced circulating currents in the phase units, which reduces arm current distortion and submodule capacitor voltage ripple
Ionization Electron Signal Processing in Single Phase LArTPCs I. Algorithm Description and Quantitative Evaluation with MicroBooNE Simulation
We describe the concept and procedure of drifted-charge extraction developed
in the MicroBooNE experiment, a single-phase liquid argon time projection
chamber (LArTPC). This technique converts the raw digitized TPC waveform to the
number of ionization electrons passing through a wire plane at a given time. A
robust recovery of the number of ionization electrons from both induction and
collection anode wire planes will augment the 3D reconstruction, and is
particularly important for tomographic reconstruction algorithms. A number of
building blocks of the overall procedure are described. The performance of the
signal processing is quantitatively evaluated by comparing extracted charge
with the true charge through a detailed TPC detector simulation taking into
account position-dependent induced current inside a single wire region and
across multiple wires. Some areas for further improvement of the performance of
the charge extraction procedure are also discussed.Comment: 60 pages, 36 figures. The second part of this work can be found at

Key technologies of active power filter for aircraft: a review
Active Power Filter (APF) is not only an advanced technology to improve power quality and purify power system pollution but also a good approach to solve electrical problems of an advanced aircraft such as harmonic, reactive power and unbalanced load. However, there are still some specific problems for the application of aeronautic APF in practice. Based on current research on aeronautic APF, this paper reviews three key technologies where APF can be used in aircraft AC power supply system, including the acquisition method of reference current, the strategy of APF current control and the main circuit topology. Â Consecutively, the features of current aeronautic APF research are summarized, and the future research directions are also suggested
