Rapid prototyping with Matlab/Simulink-- A case study.
In order to minimise development time it is important to be able to implement and test control functions at an early stage in a project, even before the electronic hardware of the new product is available. For this purpose, a PC based rapid prototyping system including a graphical modelling/simulation tool and automatic C code generation for real-time simulations with hardware in the loop may be used. In this thesis an evaluation of Matlab/Simulink as a tool for rapid prototyping of control functions in dialysis machines has been done. A comparison has also been done to the tool that is in use today at Gambro Lundia AB, MatrixX/SystemBuild. The sections that have been investigated are block diagram modelling including translation from SystemBuild block diagram, state machine implementation, Graphical User Interface, data acquisition, simulation with hardware-in-the-loop, and code generation. The Matlab/Simulink tool has been tested on a hydraulic system prototype during the evaluation and advantages and disadvantages have been noted. The report gives an overview of howMatlab/Simulink meets the requirements that can be expected of a rapid prototyping tool, for control functions and design tips to avoid problems during the development phase
Semi-automated creation of converged iTV services: From macromedia director simulations to services ready for broadcast

into services ready for broadcast. This is achieved by a series of tools that de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces (UI) and applications for mobile terminals.
The benefits of rapid prototyping are essential for the production of these new types of services, and are therefore discussed in the first section of this paper.
In the following sections, an overview of the
operation of content, service, creation and management sub-systems is presented, which illustrates why these tools compose an important and integral part of a system responsible of creating, delivering and managing converged broadcast and telecommunications services.
The next section examines a number of metadata
languages candidates for describing the iTV services user interface and the schema language adopted in this project. A detailed description of the operation of the two tools is provided to offer an insight of how they can be used to de-skill and speed-up the process of creating digital TV user interfaces and applications for mobile terminals. Finally, representative broadcast oriented and telecommunication oriented converged service components are also introduced, demonstrating how these tools have been used to generate different types of services
MeDICINE: Rapid Prototyping of Production-Ready Network Services in Multi-PoP Environments
Virtualized network services consisting of multiple individual network
functions are already today deployed across multiple sites, so called multi-PoP
(points of presence) environ- ments. This allows to improve service performance
by optimizing its placement in the network. But prototyping and testing of
these complex distributed software systems becomes extremely challenging. The
reason is that not only the network service as such has to be tested but also
its integration with management and orchestration systems. Existing solutions,
like simulators, basic network emulators, or local cloud testbeds, do not
support all aspects of these tasks. To this end, we introduce MeDICINE, a novel
NFV prototyping platform that is able to execute production-ready network func-
tions, provided as software containers, in an emulated multi-PoP environment.
These network functions can be controlled by any third-party management and
orchestration system that connects to our platform through standard interfaces.
Based on this, a developer can use our platform to prototype and test complex

Technologies to develop technology: the impact of new technologies on the organisation of the innovation process.
Companies are under increasing pressure to develop new product more effectively and efficiently. In order to meet this challenge, the organisation of the new product development process has received ample attention both in the academic literature and in the practitioner literature. As a consequence, a myriad of methods to design new products has been developed. These methods aim at facilitating concurrent product design and engineering. However, it is only recently, through the advent of families of new design technologies, that concurrency really becomes possible. In this paper, research on the impact of new design technologies on the product development process is reported and discussed. It is demonstrated that these technologies can have a significant impact on the organisation of innovation processes.Processes;

Hybrid Prototypes to Assist Modeling Automotive Seats
The development of new modular seats is an important issue in the automotive industry.
However, is very time consuming and costly. Virtual models and hybrid prototypes could
accelerate the car seats development process. The hybrid prototypes are mainly manufactured by
rapid prototyping with multi materials. The objective of this paper is to establish a methodology
to develop innovative lightweight multi-functional, modular car seats to be used in Multi-Purpose
Vehicles (MPV), by means of FEA simulation and rapid prototyping additive/subtractive
technologies utilizing multi materials. A case study is presented to validate the developed
methodology. The manufactured hybrid prototype’s reproduces the main functionalities of the

Soft and Hard Implant Fabrication Using 3D-Bioplotting TM
At the Freiburger Materialforschungszentrum we have developed a new process (3DBioplotting
TM) that permits most kind of polymers and biopolymers to be used in 3D scaffold
design, including hydrogels (e.g. collagen, agar), polymer melts (e.g. PLLA, PGA, PCl) and twocomponent systems (e.g. chitosan, fibrin). Cells can be incorporated within the construction

Systems overview of Ono: a DIY reproducible open source social robot
One of the major obstacles in the study of HRI (human-robot interaction) with social robots is the lack of multiple identical robots that allow testing with large user groups. Often, the price of these robots prohibits using more than a handful. A lot of the commercial robots do not possess all the necessary features to perform specific HRI experiments and due to the closed nature of the platform, large modifications are nearly impossible. While open source social robots do exist, they often use high-end components and expensive manufacturing techniques, making them unsuitable for easy reproduction. To address this problem, a new social robotics platform, named Ono, was developed. The design is based on the DIY mindset of the maker movement, using off-the-shelf components and more accessible rapid prototyping and manufacturing techniques. The modular structure of the robot makes it easy to adapt to the needs of the experiment and by embracing the open source mentality, the robot can be easily reproduced or further developed by a community of users. The low cost, open nature and DIY friendliness of the robot make it an ideal candidate for HRI studies that require a large user group
A method to Formalise the Rapid Prototyping Process
