An Overview of How Semantics and Corrections Can Help Language Learning
International audienceWe present an overview of the results obtained with a computational model that takes into account semantics and corrections for language learning. This model is constructed with a learner and a teacher who interact in a sequence of shared situations. The model was tested with limited sublanguages of 10 natural languages in a common domain of situations
The Parallel Meaning Bank: Towards a Multilingual Corpus of Translations Annotated with Compositional Meaning Representations
The Parallel Meaning Bank is a corpus of translations annotated with shared,
formal meaning representations comprising over 11 million words divided over
four languages (English, German, Italian, and Dutch). Our approach is based on
cross-lingual projection: automatically produced (and manually corrected)
semantic annotations for English sentences are mapped onto their word-aligned
translations, assuming that the translations are meaning-preserving. The
semantic annotation consists of five main steps: (i) segmentation of the text
in sentences and lexical items; (ii) syntactic parsing with Combinatory
Categorial Grammar; (iii) universal semantic tagging; (iv) symbolization; and
(v) compositional semantic analysis based on Discourse Representation Theory.
These steps are performed using statistical models trained in a semi-supervised
manner. The employed annotation models are all language-neutral. Our first

sk_p: a neural program corrector for MOOCs
We present a novel technique for automatic program correction in MOOCs,
capable of fixing both syntactic and semantic errors without manual, problem
specific correction strategies. Given an incorrect student program, it
generates candidate programs from a distribution of likely corrections, and
checks each candidate for correctness against a test suite.
The key observation is that in MOOCs many programs share similar code
fragments, and the seq2seq neural network model, used in the natural-language
processing task of machine translation, can be modified and trained to recover
these fragments.
Experiment shows our scheme can correct 29% of all incorrect submissions and
out-performs state of the art approach which requires manual, problem specific
correction strategies
Big data and the SP theory of intelligence
This article is about how the "SP theory of intelligence" and its realisation
in the "SP machine" may, with advantage, be applied to the management and
analysis of big data. The SP system -- introduced in the article and fully
described elsewhere -- may help to overcome the problem of variety in big data:
it has potential as "a universal framework for the representation and
processing of diverse kinds of knowledge" (UFK), helping to reduce the
diversity of formalisms and formats for knowledge and the different ways in
which they are processed. It has strengths in the unsupervised learning or
discovery of structure in data, in pattern recognition, in the parsing and
production of natural language, in several kinds of reasoning, and more. It
lends itself to the analysis of streaming data, helping to overcome the problem
of velocity in big data. Central in the workings of the system is lossless
compression of information: making big data smaller and reducing problems of
storage and management. There is potential for substantial economies in the
transmission of data, for big cuts in the use of energy in computing, for
faster processing, and for smaller and lighter computers. The system provides a
handle on the problem of veracity in big data, with potential to assist in the
management of errors and uncertainties in data. It lends itself to the
visualisation of knowledge structures and inferential processes. A
high-parallel, open-source version of the SP machine would provide a means for
researchers everywhere to explore what can be done with the system and to

Towards a collocation writing assistant for learners of Spanish
This paper describes the process followed in creating a tool aimed at helping learners produce collocations in Spanish. First we present the Diccionario de colocaciones del español (DiCE), an online collocation dictionary, which represents the first stage of this process. The following section focuses on the potential user of a collocation learning tool: we examine the usability problems DiCE presents in this respect, and explore the actual learner needs through a learner corpus study of collocation errors. Next, we review how collocation production problems of English language learners can be solved using a variety of electronic tools devised for that language. Finally, taking all the above into account, we present a new tool aimed at assisting learners of Spanish in writing texts, with particular attention being paid to the use of collocations in this language
The BURCHAK corpus: a Challenge Data Set for Interactive Learning of Visually Grounded Word Meanings
We motivate and describe a new freely available human-human dialogue dataset
for interactive learning of visually grounded word meanings through ostensive
definition by a tutor to a learner. The data has been collected using a novel,
character-by-character variant of the DiET chat tool (Healey et al., 2003;
Mills and Healey, submitted) with a novel task, where a Learner needs to learn
invented visual attribute words (such as " burchak " for square) from a tutor.
As such, the text-based interactions closely resemble face-to-face conversation
and thus contain many of the linguistic phenomena encountered in natural,
spontaneous dialogue. These include self-and other-correction, mid-sentence
continuations, interruptions, overlaps, fillers, and hedges. We also present a
generic n-gram framework for building user (i.e. tutor) simulations from this
type of incremental data, which is freely available to researchers. We show
that the simulations produce outputs that are similar to the original data
(e.g. 78% turn match similarity). Finally, we train and evaluate a
Reinforcement Learning dialogue control agent for learning visually grounded
word meanings, trained from the BURCHAK corpus. The learned policy shows
