Improving Knowledge Retrieval in Digital Libraries Applying Intelligent Techniques
Nowadays an enormous quantity of heterogeneous and distributed information is stored in the digital University. Exploring online collections to find knowledge relevant to a user’s interests is a challenging work. The artificial intelligence and Semantic Web provide a common framework that allows knowledge to
be shared and reused in an efficient way. In this work we propose a comprehensive approach for discovering E-learning objects in large digital collections based on analysis of recorded semantic metadata in those objects and the application of expert system technologies. We have used Case Based-Reasoning
methodology to develop a prototype for supporting efficient retrieval knowledge from online repositories.
We suggest a conceptual architecture for a semantic search engine. OntoUS is a collaborative effort that
proposes a new form of interaction between users and digital libraries, where the latter are adapted to users
and their surroundings
Towards Mass Adoption of Contact Tracing Apps - Learning from Users’ Preferences to Improve App Design
Contact tracing apps have become one of the main approaches to control and
slow down the spread of COVID-19 and ease up lockdown measures. While these
apps can be very effective in stopping the transmission chain and saving lives,
their adoption remains under the expected critical mass. The public debate
about contact tracing apps emphasizes general privacy reservations and is
conducted at an expert level, but lacks the user perspective related to actual
designs. To address this gap, we explore user preferences for contact tracing
apps using market research techniques, and specifically conjoint analysis. Our
main contributions are empirical insights into individual and group
preferences, as well as insights for prescriptive design. While our results
confirm the privacy-preserving design of most European contact tracing apps,
they also provide a more nuanced understanding of acceptable features. Based on
market simulation and variation analysis, we conclude that adding
goal-congruent features will play an important role in fostering mass adoption
Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)
This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio
DRIVER Technology Watch Report
This report is part of the Discovery Workpackage (WP4) and is the third report out of four deliverables. The objective of this report is to give an overview of the latest technical developments in the world of digital repositories, digital libraries and beyond, in order to serve as theoretical and practical input for the technical DRIVER developments, especially those focused on enhanced publications. This report consists of two main parts, one part focuses on interoperability standards for enhanced publications, the other part consists of three subchapters, which give a landscape picture of current and surfacing technologies and communities crucial to DRIVER. These three subchapters contain the GRID, CRIS and LTP communities and technologies. Every chapter contains a theoretical explanation, followed by case studies and the outcomes and opportunities for DRIVER in this field
Implementation Study of Public Policies in Defense Diplomacy: A Path Towards ASEAN Defense Community
The Region of Southeast Asia comprises some very different countries, which differ broadly in the number of people, their riches, the security challenges, and administrative systems those states to encounter. This study purposes of addressing the questions: 1) in what way does the implementation of ASEAN’s defense diplomacy policy? 2) To form an ASEAN defense community, what characteristics needed in the implementation of ASEAN’s defense diplomacy policy? While the term “defense diplomacy” has developed in Southeast Asia in the last decades, but the indication of a defense community did not occur in the establishment of ASEAN as a tool of defense diplomacy. Consequently, this study expects to introduce a new viewpoint concerning defense cooperation in the region. This study also attempts to study further whether there are characteristics of ASEAN defense diplomacy, in which the armed forces perform a part in external policy. The research aims to characterize the policy implementation of defense diplomacy in ASEAN and to analyze the existing characteristics of the defense community, which has used for defense diplomacy towards a Southeast Asia defense community. The study narrows to analyzing merely the utility of ASEAN militaries in diplomacy role, mainly limited only in defense cooperation engagements under the structure of ADMM and ADMM-Plus. The researcher used the triangulation test to validate the data. The data analysis used is Grounded Theory research. The result of the analysis is to recognize the policy implementation of ASEAN defense diplomacy and to find characteristics or element which appears in the environment of policy implementation in the defense community, which needed in the defense cooperation and diplomacy policy, towards the path of ASEAN Defense Community.
