    Modelling the Integrated QoS for Wireless Sensor Networks with Heterogeneous Data Traffic

    The future of Internet of Things (IoT) is envisaged to consist of a high amount of wireless resource-constrained devices connected to the Internet. Moreover, a lot of novel real-world services offered by IoT devices are realized by wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Integrating WSN to the Internet has therefore brought forward the requirements of an end-to-end quality of service (QoS) guarantee. In this paper, the QoS requirements for the WSN-Internet integration are investigated by first distinguishing the Internet QoS from the WSN QoS. Next, this study emphasizes on WSN applications that involve traffic with different levels of importance, thus the way realtime traffic and delay-tolerant traffic are handled to guarantee QoS in the network is studied. Additionally, an overview of the integration strategies is given, and the delay-tolerant network (DTN) gateway, being one of the desirable approaches for integrating WSNs to the Internet, is discussed. Next, the implementation of the service model is presented, by considering both traffic prioritization and service differentiation. Based on the simulation results in OPNET Modeler, it is observed that real-time traffic achieve low bound delay while delay-tolerant traffic experience a lower packet dropped, hence indicating that the needs of real-time and delay-tolerant traffic can be better met by treating both packet types differently. Furthermore, a vehicular network is used as an example case to describe the applicability of the framework in a real IoT application environment, followed by a discussion on the future work of this research

    Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

    With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed

    On the performance of social-based and location-aware forwarding strategies in urban vehicular networks

    High vehicular mobility in urban scenarios originates inter-vehicles communication discontinuities, a highly important factor when designing a forwarding strategy for vehicular networks. Store, carry and forward mechanisms enable the usage of vehicular networks in a large set of applications, such as sensor data collection in IoT, contributing to smart city platforms. This work evaluates the performance of several location-based and social-aware forwarding schemes through emulations and in a real scenario. Gateway Location Awareness (GLA), a location-aware ranking classification, makes use of velocity, heading angle and distance to the gateway, to select the vehicles with higher chance to deliver the information in a shorter period of time, thus differentiating nodes through their movement patterns. Aging Social-Aware Ranking (ASAR) exploits the social behavior of each vehicle, where nodes are ranked based on a historical contact table, differentiating vehicles with a high number of contacts from those who barely contact with other vehicles. To merge both location and social aforementioned algorithms, a HYBRID approach emerges, thus generating a more intelligent mechanism. For each strategy, we evaluate the influence of several parameters in the network performance, as well as we comparatively evaluate the strategies in different scenarios. Experiment results, obtained both in emulated (with real traces of both mobility and vehicular connectivity from a real city-scale urban vehicular network) and real scenarios, show the performance of GLA, ASAR and HYBRID schemes, and their results are compared to lower- and upper-bounds. The obtained results show that these strategies are a good tradeoff to maximize data delivery ratio and minimize network overhead, while making use of mobile networks as a smart city network infrastructure.publishe

    Estratégias de encaminhamento para recolha oportunística de informação em redes móveis de internet das coisas

Store, carry and forward mechanisms enable the usage of vehicular networks in a large set of applications, such as sensor data collection in IoT, contributing to smart city platforms. This work focuses on two main topics to enhance the forwarding decision: i) forwarding strategies that make use of location-aware and social-based to perform neighborhood selection, ii) and packet selection mechanisms to provide Quality of Service (QoS). The neighborhood selection is performed through multiple metrics, resulting in three forwarding strategies: (1) Gateway Location Awareness (GLA), a location-aware ranking classification making use of velocity, heading angle and distance to the gateway, to select the vehicles with higher chance to deliver the information in a shorter period of time, thus differentiating nodes through their movement patterns; (2) Aging Social-Aware Ranking (ASAR) that exploits the social behaviours of each vehicle, where nodes are ranked based on a historical contact table, differentiating vehicles with a high number of contacts from those who barely contact with other vehicles; (3) and to merge both location and social aforementioned algorithms, a hybrid approach emerges, thus generating a more intelligent mechanism. Allied to the forwarding criteria, two packet selection mechanisms are proposed to address distinct network functionalities, namely: Distributed Packet Selection, that focuses primarily on data type prioritization and secondly, on packet network lifetime; and Equalized Packet Selection, which uses network metrics to calculate a storage packet ranking. To do so, the packet number of hops, the packet type and packet network lifetime are used. In order to perform the evaluation of the proposed mechanisms, both real and emulation experiments were performed. For each forwarding strategy, it is evaluated the influence of several parameters in the network's performance, as well as comparatively evaluate the strategies in different scenarios. Experiment results, obtained with real traces of both mobility and vehicular connectivity from a real city-scale urban vehicular network, are used to evaluate the performance of GLA, ASAR and HYBRID schemes, and their results are compared to lower- and upper-bounds. Later, these strategies' viability is also validated in a real scenario. The obtained results show that these strategies are a good tradeoff to maximize data delivery ratio and minimize network overhead, while making use of moving networks as a smart city network infrastructure. To evaluate the proposed packet selection mechanisms, a First In First Out packet selection technique is used as ground rule, thus contrasting with the more objective driven proposed techniques. The results show that the proposed mechanisms are capable of provide distinct network functionalities, from prioritizing a packet type to enhancing the network's performance.A elevada mobilidade em cenários veiculares urbanos origina descontinuidades de comunicação entre veículos, um fator altamente importante quando se desenha uma estratégia de encaminhamento para redes veiculares. Mecanismos de store, carry and forward (guardar, carregar e entregar) possibilitam a recolha de dados de sensores em aplicações da Internet das coisas, contribuindo para plataformas de cidades inteligentes. Este trabalho é focado em dois tópicos principais de forma a melhorar a decisão de encaminhamento: i) estratégias de encaminhamento que fazem uso de métricas sociais e de localização para efetuar a seleção de vizinhos, ii) e mecanismos de seleção de pacotes que qualificam a rede com qualidade de serviço. A seleção de vizinhos é feita através de múltiplas métricas, resultando em três estratégias de encaminhamento: Gateway Location Awareness (GLA), uma classificação baseada em localização que faz uso de velocidade, ângulo de direção e distância até uma gateway, para selecionar os veículos com maior probabilidade de entregar a informação num menor período temporal, distinguindo os veículos através dos seus padrões de movimento. Aging Social-Aware Ranking (ASAR) explora os comportamentos sociais de cada veículo, onde é atribuída uma classificação aos veículos com base num histórico de contactos, diferenciando veículos com um alto número de contactos de outros com menos. Por fim, por forma a tirar partido das distintas características de cada uma das destas estratégias, é proposta uma abordagem híbrida, Hybrid between GLA and ASAR (HYBRID). Aliado ao critério de encaminhamento, são propostos dois mecanismos de seleção de pacotes que focam distintas funcionalidades na rede, sendo estes: Distributed Packet Selection, que foca em primeiro lugar na prioritização de determinados tipos de pacotes e em segundo lugar, no tempo de vida que resta ao pacote na rede; e Equalized Packet Selection, que usa métricas da rede para calcular a classificação de cada pacote em memória. Para tal, é usado o numero de saltos do pacote, o tipo de dados do pacote e o tempo de vida que resta ao pacote na rede. De forma a avaliar os mecanismos propostos, foram realizadas experiências em emulador e em cenário real. Para cada estratégia de encaminhamento, e avaliada a influência de vários parâmetros de configuração no desempenho da rede. Para além disso, é feita uma avaliação comparativa entre as várias estratégias em diferentes cenários. Resultados experimentais, obtidos usando traços reais de mobilidade e conetividade de uma rede veicular urbana, são utilizados para avaliar a performance dos esquemas GLA, ASAR e HYRID. Posteriormente, a viabilidade destas estratégias é também validada em cenário real. Os resultados obtidos mostram que estas estratégias são um bom tradeoff para maximizar a taxa de entrega de dados e minimizar a sobrecarga de dados na rede. Para avaliar os mecanismos de seleção de pacotes, um simples mecanismo First In First Out é utilizado como base, contrapondo com as técnicas propostas mais orientadas a objectivos concretos.     Secured Scheme for Privacy Preserving and Node Authentication Mechanism for a Special Mobile Ad hoc Network

    Opportunistic networks are a special type of Mobile Ad hoc network which are wirelessly interlinked nodes with the absence of end to end connectivity. All nodes in an opportunistic network are free to move in an environment. Due to the high degree of mobility of nodes, opportunistic networks differ significantly from the existing traditional networks and it works on store, carry &forward mechanism in which, each node has a communication range. Within its proximity, if any node comes, it can send and receive messages. In an opportunistic network, there is no proper infrastructure available for communication and node have limited storage and computational capabilities. The major problem being faced in an opportunistic network is the identification of normal and malicious nodes because due to the open nature of the opportunistic network, malicious nodes also can join the network and perform some malicious activities like Sybil attack. We propose a remedy to address the authentication and privacy issue that can arise in an opportunistic network. According to the findings of the simulation, the proposed research work satisfies the authentication and privacy criteria of an opportunistic network

    A mobile agent and message ferry mechanism based routing for delay tolerant network

    Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) is a class of networks characterized by long delays, frequent disconnections and partitioning of communication paths between network nodes. Due to the frequent disconnection and network partitioning, the overall performance of the network will be deteriorated sharply. The problem is how to make the network fairly connected to optimize data routing and enhance the performance of a network. The aim of this study is to improve the performance of DTN by minimizing end-to-end delivery time and increasing message delivery ratio. Therefore, this research tackles the problem of intermittent connectivity and network partitioning by introducing Agents and Ferry Mechanism based Routing (AFMR). The AFMR comprises of two stages by applying two schemes: mobile agents and ferry mechanism. The agents' scheme is proposed to deal with intermittent connectivity and network partitioning by collecting the basic information about network connection such as signal strength, nodes position in the network and distance to the destination nodes to minimize end-to-end delivery time. The second stage is to increase the message delivery ratio by moving the nodes towards the path with available network connectivity based on agents' feedback. The AFMR is evaluated through simulations and the results are compared with those of Epidemic, PRoPHET and Message Ferry (MF). The findings demonstrate that AFMR is superior to all three, with respect to the average end-to-end delivery time, message delivery ratio, network load and message drop ratio, which are regarded as extremely important metrics for the evaluation of DTN routing protocols. The AFMR achieves improved network performance in terms of end-to-end delivery time (56.3%); enhanced message delivery ratio (60.0%); mitigation of message drop (63.5%) and reduced network load (26.1 %). The contributions of this thesis are to enhance the performance of DTN by significantly overcoming the intermittent connectivity and network partitioning problems in the network

    Trustworthiness Mechanisms for Long-Distance Networks in Internet of Things

    Aquesta tesi té com a objectiu aconseguir un intercanvi de dades fiable en un entorn hostil millorant-ne la confiabilitat mitjançant el disseny d'un model complet que tingui en compte les diferents capes de confiabilitat i mitjançant la implementació de les contramesures associades al model. La tesi se centra en el cas d'ús del projecte SHETLAND-NET, amb l'objectiu de desplegar una arquitectura d'Internet de les coses (IoT) híbrida amb comunicacions LoRa i d'ona ionosfèrica d'incidència gairebé vertical (NVIS) per oferir un servei de telemetria per al monitoratge del “permafrost” a l'Antàrtida. Per complir els objectius de la tesi, en primer lloc, es fa una revisió de l'estat de l'art en confiabilitat per proposar una definició i l'abast del terme de confiança. Partint d'aquí, es dissenya un model de confiabilitat de quatre capes, on cada capa es caracteritza pel seu abast, mètrica per a la quantificació de la confiabilitat, contramesures per a la millora de la confiabilitat i les interdependències amb les altres capes. Aquest model permet el mesurament i l'avaluació de la confiabilitat del cas d'ús a l'Antàrtida. Donades les condicions hostils i les limitacions de la tecnologia utilitzada en aquest cas d’ús, es valida el model i s’avalua el servei de telemetria a través de simulacions en Riverbed Modeler. Per obtenir valors anticipats de la confiabilitat esperada, l'arquitectura proposada es modela per avaluar els resultats amb diferents configuracions previ al seu desplegament en proves de camp. L'arquitectura proposada passa per tres principals iteracions de millora de la confiabilitat. A la primera iteració, s'explora l'ús de mecanismes de consens i gestió de la confiança social per aprofitar la redundància de sensors. En la segona iteració, s’avalua l’ús de protocols de transport moderns per al cas d’ús antàrtic. L’última iteració d’aquesta tesi avalua l’ús d’una arquitectura de xarxa tolerant al retard (DTN) utilitzant el Bundle Protocol (BP) per millorar la confiabilitat del sistema. Finalment, es presenta una prova de concepte (PoC) amb maquinari real que es va desplegar a la campanya antàrtica 2021-2022, descrivint les proves de camp funcionals realitzades a l'Antàrtida i Catalunya.Esta tesis tiene como objetivo lograr un intercambio de datos confiable en un entorno hostil mejorando su confiabilidad mediante el diseño de un modelo completo que tenga en cuenta las diferentes capas de confiabilidad y mediante la implementación de las contramedidas asociadas al modelo. La tesis se centra en el caso de uso del proyecto SHETLAND-NET, con el objetivo de desplegar una arquitectura de Internet de las cosas (IoT) híbrida con comunicaciones LoRa y de onda ionosférica de incidencia casi vertical (NVIS) para ofrecer un servicio de telemetría para el monitoreo del “permafrost” en la Antártida. Finalmente, se presenta una prueba de concepto (PoC) con hardware real que se desplegó en la campaña antártica 2021-2022, describiendo las pruebas de campo funcionales realizadas en la Antártida y Cataluña.This thesis aims at achieving reliable data exchange over a harsh environment by improving its trustworthiness through the design of a complete model that takes into account the different layers of trustworthiness and through the implementation of the model’s associated countermeasures. The thesis focuses on the use case of the SHETLAND-NET project, aiming to deploy a hybrid Internet of Things (IoT) architecture with LoRa and Near Vertical Incidence Skywave (NVIS) communications to offer a telemetry service for permafrost monitoring in Antarctica. To accomplish the thesis objectives, first, a review of the state of the art in trustworthiness is carried out to propose a definition and scope of the trustworthiness term. From these, a four-layer trustworthiness model is designed, with each layer characterized by its scope, metric for trustworthiness accountability, countermeasures for trustworthiness improvement, and the interdependencies with the other layers. This model enables trustworthiness accountability and assessment of the Antarctic use case. Given the harsh conditions and the limitations of the use technology in this use case, the model is validated and the telemetry service is evaluated through simulations in Riverbed Modeler. To obtain anticipated values of the expected trustworthiness, the proposal has been modeled to evaluate the performance with different configurations prior to its deployment in the field. The proposed architecture goes through three major iterations of trustworthiness improvement. In the first iteration, using social trust management and consensus mechanisms is explored to take advantage of sensor redundancy. In the second iteration, the use of modern transport protocols is evaluated for the Antarctic use case. The final iteration of this thesis assesses using a Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) architecture using the Bundle Protocol (BP) to improve the system’s trustworthiness. Finally, a Proof of Concept (PoC) with real hardware that was deployed in the 2021-2022 Antarctic campaign is presented, describing the functional tests performed in Antarctica and Catalonia

    Mecanismos de rede para swarms de drones em ambientes de monitorização aquática

    With the development of intelligent platforms for environment sensing, drones present themselves as a fundamental resource capable of responding to the widest range of applications. Monitoring aquatic sensing environments is one such application and the communication between them becomes a key aspect for both navigation and sensing tasks. Testing an aquatic environment with a high number of Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) is very costly, requiring a lot of time and resources. Therefore, simulation platforms become elements of great importance . In this dissertation a simulator is developed containing a modular architecture, based on a delay tolerant network, being capable of simulating aquatic environments as similar as possible to real aquatic environments. In addition to the developed simulator, this dissertation presents methods and strategies of cluster formation, allowing the aquatic drones to select, in a distributed way, the gateways of each cluster that will be responsible for forwarding collected data towards the gateway on land. Two gateway selection methods were implemented, one focused on the energy of aquatic drones, and one considering different metrics such as link quality, centrality and energy. The proposed methods were evaluated across several cases and scenarios, with clusters built and changed in a dynamic way, and it was observed that the election of gateways with a method based on several metrics, together with appropriated control strategy, provides a better outcome of the network behaviour throughout the aquatic monitoring tasks.Com o desenvolvimento de plataformas inteligentes que permitem monitorizar vários ambientes, os drones apresentam-se como um recurso fundamental capaz de responder às mais vastas aplicações. A monitorização de meios aquáticos com recurso a drones é uma destas aplicações e a comunicação entre os mesmos torna-se um aspeto fundamental, tanto em tarefas de navegação como em tarefas de sensorização. Testar um ambiente aquático com um elevado número de drones aquáticos é muito caro, requer muito tempo e vários recursos, por isso, plataformas de simulação tornam-se elementos de grande importância. Nesta dissertação é desenvolvido um simulador, com uma arquitetura modular, tendo por base uma rede tolerante a atrasos, sendo capaz de simular ambientes aquáticos o mais semelhante possível a ambientes aquáticos reais. Para além do simulador desenvolvido, esta dissertação propõe métodos e estratégias de formação de clusters de drones, permitindo que os drones aquáticos elejam, de uma forma distribuída, os gateways de cada cluster que serão responsáveis por encaminhar os dados recolhidos pelos drones em direção à estação em terra. Foram implementados dois métodos de eleição de gateway, um focado na energia dos drones aquáticos, e outro capaz de considerar diferentes métricas, tais como a qualidade de ligação, a centralidade e a energia. Os métodos propostos foram avaliados através de vários cenários em que os clusters são construídos e alterados de forma dinâmica, e foi observado que a escolha de gateways com um método baseado em várias métricas, e juntamente com uma estratégia de controlo apropriada, proporciona um melhor comportamento da rede ao longo das tarefas de monitorização aquática.Mestrado em Engenharia Eletrónica e Telecomunicaçõe

    Predictive smart relaying schemes for decentralized wireless systems

    Recent developments in decentralized wireless networks make the technology potentially deployable in an extremely broad scenarios and applications. These include mobile Internet of Things (IoT) networks, smart cities, future innovative communication systems with multiple aerial layer flying network platforms and other advanced mobile communication networks. The approach also could be the solution for traditional operated mobile network backup plans, balancing traffic flow, emergency communication systems and so on. This thesis reveals and addresses several issues and challenges in conventional wireless communication systems, particular for the cases where there is a lack of resources and the disconnection of radio links. There are two message routing plans in the data packet store, carry and forwarding form are proposed, known as KaFiR and PaFiR. These employ the Bayesian filtering approach to track and predict the motion of surrounding portable devices and determine the next layer among candidate nodes. The relaying strategies endow smart devices with the intelligent capability to optimize the message routing path and improve the overall network performance with respect to resilience, tolerance and scalability. The simulation and test results present that the KaFiR routing protocol performs well when network subscribers are less mobile and the relaying protocol can be deployed on a wide range of portable terminals as the algorithm is rather simple to operate. The PaFiR routing strategy takes advantages of the Particle Filter algorithm, which can cope with complex network scenarios and applications, particularly when unmanned aerial vehicles are involved as the assisted intermediate layers. When compared with other existing DTN routing protocols and some of the latest relaying plans, both relaying protocols deliver an excellent overall performance for the key wireless communication network evolution metrics, which shows the promising future for this brand new research direction. Further extension work directions based on the tracking and prediction methods are suggested and reviewed. Future work on some new applications and services are also addressed
