XQOWL: An Extension of XQuery for OWL Querying and Reasoning
One of the main aims of the so-called Web of Data is to be able to handle
heterogeneous resources where data can be expressed in either XML or RDF. The
design of programming languages able to handle both XML and RDF data is a key
target in this context. In this paper we present a framework called XQOWL that
makes possible to handle XML and RDF/OWL data with XQuery. XQOWL can be
considered as an extension of the XQuery language that connects XQuery with
SPARQL and OWL reasoners. XQOWL embeds SPARQL queries (via Jena SPARQL engine)
in XQuery and enables to make calls to OWL reasoners (HermiT, Pellet and
FaCT++) from XQuery. It permits to combine queries against XML and RDF/OWL
resources as well as to reason with RDF/OWL data. Therefore input data can be
either XML or RDF/OWL and output data can be formatted in XML (also using

Querying a regulatory model for compliant building design audit
The ingredients for an effective automated audit of a building design include a BIM model containing the design information, an electronic regulatory knowledge model, and a practical method of processing these computerised representations. There have been numerous approaches to computer-aided compliance audit in the AEC/FM domain over the last four decades, but none has yet evolved into a practical solution. One reason is that they have all been isolated attempts that lack any form of standardisation. The current research project therefore focuses on using an open standard regulatory knowledge and BIM representations in conjunction with open standard executable compliant design workflows to automate the compliance audit process. This paper provides an overview of different approaches to access information from a regulatory model representation. The paper then describes the use of a purpose-built high-level domain specific query language to extract regulatory information as part of the effort to automate manual design procedures for compliance audit
Sensor Search Techniques for Sensing as a Service Architecture for The Internet of Things
The Internet of Things (IoT) is part of the Internet of the future and will
comprise billions of intelligent communicating "things" or Internet Connected
Objects (ICO) which will have sensing, actuating, and data processing
capabilities. Each ICO will have one or more embedded sensors that will capture
potentially enormous amounts of data. The sensors and related data streams can
be clustered physically or virtually, which raises the challenge of searching
and selecting the right sensors for a query in an efficient and effective way.
This paper proposes a context-aware sensor search, selection and ranking model,
called CASSARAM, to address the challenge of efficiently selecting a subset of
relevant sensors out of a large set of sensors with similar functionality and
capabilities. CASSARAM takes into account user preferences and considers a
broad range of sensor characteristics, such as reliability, accuracy, location,
battery life, and many more. The paper highlights the importance of sensor
search, selection and ranking for the IoT, identifies important characteristics
of both sensors and data capture processes, and discusses how semantic and
quantitative reasoning can be combined together. This work also addresses
challenges such as efficient distributed sensor search and
relational-expression based filtering. CASSARAM testing and performance

Including widespread geometry formats in semantic graphs using RDF literals
The exchange of building data involves both geometric and non-geometric data. A promising Linked Data approach is to embed data from existing geometry formats inside Resource Description Framework (RDF) literals. Based on a study of relevant specifications and related work, this toolset-independent approach was found suitable for the exchange of geometric construction data. To implement the approach in practice, the File Ontology for Geometry formats (FOG) and accompanying modelling method is developed. In a proof-of-concept web application that uses FOG, is demonstrated how geometry descriptions of different existing formats are automatically recognised and parsed

Extracting ontologies from software documentation: a semi-automatic method and its evaluation
