    A knowledge hub to enhance the learning processes of an industrial cluster

    Industrial clusters have been defined as ?networks of production of strongly interdependent firms (including specialised suppliers), knowledge producing agents (universities, research institutes, engineering companies), institutions (brokers, consultants), linked to each other in a value adding production chain? (OECD Focus Group, 1999). The industrial clusters distinctive mode of production is specialisation, based on a sophisticated division of labour, that leads to interlinked activities and need for cooperation, with the consequent emergence of communities of practice (CoPs). CoPs are here conceived as groups of people and/or organisations bound together by shared expertise and propensity towards a joint work (Wenger and Suyden, 1999). Cooperation needs closeness for just-in-time delivery, for communication, for the exchange of knowledge, especially in its tacit form. Indeed the knowledge exchanges between the CoPs specialised actors, in geographical proximity, lead to spillovers and synergies. In the digital economy landscape, the use of collaborative technologies, such as shared repositories, chat rooms and videoconferences can, when appropriately used, have a positive impact on the development of the CoP exchanges process of codified knowledge. On the other end, systems for the individuals profile management, e-learning platforms and intelligent agents can trigger also some socialisation mechanisms of tacit knowledge. In this perspective, we have set-up a model of a Knowledge Hub (KH), driven by the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT-driven), that enables the knowledge exchanges of a CoP. In order to present the model, the paper is organised in the following logical steps: - an overview of the most seminal and consolidated approaches to CoPs; - a description of the KH model, ICT-driven, conceived as a booster of the knowledge exchanges of a CoP, that adds to the economic benefits coming from geographical proximity, the advantages coming from organizational proximity, based on the ICTs; - a discussion of some preliminary results that we are obtaining during the implementation of the model.

    Due to increasing global competition, companies are challenged to make their production flexible and adaptable. This leads to a steadily increasing complexity of production systems and thus their automation and control processes. At the same time, control processes must be quickly configurable in order to be able to react to short product life cycles. Robot-based adhesive application in automotive body assembly represents one such control and automation process. In car body assembly, industrial robots are increasingly being used for gluing side panels, enabling flow operation in assembly. In the event of a functional change in the production process, such as the replacement of the adhesive to be used, all the given process interrelationships must be analysed again and reconfigured if necessary in order to ensure the quality of the bonded joint. Comprehensive data management systems that provide an overview of all the system parameters and control levers are often not available in companies, so that reconfiguration is based on experience. Correct adjustment of the process parameters thus requires the user to have precise knowledge of the complex interrelationships between the process and bonding parameters, which makes the search for solutions in the event of a process change more difficult and time-consuming. In order to master the complexity of process planning and configuration, a large number of user-supporting solutions exist in the area of product lifecycle management (PLM). However, these neither have the functionality to generate solution and optimization proposals, nor do they map the existing expert knowledge with so-called empirical values about the system behaviour. The advantages of semantic technologies including ontologies, such as their graph structure and suitability for the use of optimization algorithms, illustrate their potential as the basis of a knowledge-based assistance solution. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to develop an ontology-based knowledge management system that can consolidate existing product and process information and add expert knowledge to it. The resulting knowledge graph of the process is then examined using selected optimization algorithms (PMS, Parallel Machine Scheduling). From the analysis, configuration suggestions can be derived, which can be presented to the user with a visualisation interface. Finally, the potential of ontologies as the basis of a knowledge-based assistance system is evaluated based on given results

    Context-aware adaptation in DySCAS

    DySCAS is a dynamically self-configuring middleware for automotive control systems. The addition of autonomic, context-aware dynamic configuration to automotive control systems brings a potential for a wide range of benefits in terms of robustness, flexibility, upgrading etc. However, the automotive systems represent a particularly challenging domain for the deployment of autonomics concepts, having a combination of real-time performance constraints, severe resource limitations, safety-critical aspects and cost pressures. For these reasons current systems are statically configured. This paper describes the dynamic run-time configuration aspects of DySCAS and focuses on the extent to which context-aware adaptation has been achieved in DySCAS, and the ways in which the various design and implementation challenges are met

    158 p.En esta Tesis Doctoral se plantea una arquitectura de gestión genérica y personalizable, capaz de asegurar el cumplimiento de los requisitos de calidad de servicio (QoS) de un sistema de control industrial. Esta arquitectura permite la modificación de los mecanismos de detección y recuperación de los requisitos de QoS en función de diversos tipos de ésta. Como prueba de concepto, la arquitectura de gestión ha sido implementada mediante un middleware basado en sistemas multi-agente. Este middleware proporciona una serie de agentes distribuidos, los cuales se encargan de la monitorización y recuperación de las QoS en caso de su perdida.La incorporación de los mecanismos de reconfiguración incrementa la complejidad de los sistemas de control. Con el fin de facilitar el diseño de estos sistemas, se ha presentado un framework basado en modelos que guía y facilita el diseño de los sistemas de control reconfigurables.     The need to innovate and compete drives organisations to constantly seek new approaches to facilitate business and commerce. As market places become ever more globalised and digital economies grow, these organisations rely more heavily upon systems to design and deliver their products and services. Hence, when developing and operating a global production network the need for systems to interoperate between different domains and contexts within a global production network becomes paramount if organisations are to succeed. This paper puts forwards a reference ontology that has been developed to enable the interoperation of software tools involved in the global production of new product-services systems (PSS). It sets out the levels of the reference ontology, detailing closely the product-service aspects. This has been developed using a formal logic based approach.
