    Object Classification in Astronomical Multi-Color Surveys

    We present a photometric method for identifying stars, galaxies and quasars in multi-color surveys, which uses a library of >65000 color templates. The method aims for extracting the information content of object colors in a statistically correct way and performs a classification as well as a redshift estimation for galaxies and quasars in a unified approach. For the redshift estimation, we use an advanced version of the MEV estimator which determines the redshift error from the redshift dependent probability density function. The method was originally developed for the CADIS survey, where we checked its performance by spectroscopy. The method provides high reliability (6 errors among 151 objects with R<24), especially for quasar selection, and redshifts accurate within sigma ~ 0.03 for galaxies and sigma ~ 0.1 for quasars. We compare a few model surveys using the same telescope time but different sets of broad-band and medium-band filters. Their performance is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations as well as by analytic evaluation in terms of classification and redshift estimation. In practice, medium-band surveys show superior performance. Finally, we discuss the relevance of color calibration and derive important conclusions for the issues of library design and choice of filters. The calibration accuracy poses strong constraints on an accurate classification, and is most critical for surveys with few, broad and deeply exposed filters, but less severe for many, narrow and less deep filters.Comment: 21 pages including 10 figures.     View-based approaches to spatial representation in human vision

    In an immersive virtual environment, observers fail to notice the expansion of a room around them and consequently make gross errors when comparing the size of objects. This result is difficult to explain if the visual system continuously generates a 3-D model of the scene based on known baseline information from interocular separation or proprioception as the observer walks. An alternative is that observers use view-based methods to guide their actions and to represent the spatial layout of the scene. In this case, they may have an expectation of the images they will receive but be insensitive to the rate at which images arrive as they walk. We describe the way in which the eye movement strategy of animals simplifies motion processing if their goal is to move towards a desired image and discuss dorsal and ventral stream processing of moving images in that context. Although many questions about view-based approaches to scene representation remain unanswered, the solutions are likely to be highly relevant to understanding biological 3-D vision

    Segmentation and classification of individual tree crowns

    By segmentation and classification of individual tree crowns in high spatial resolution aerial images, information about the forest can be automatically extracted. Segmentation is about finding the individual tree crowns and giving each of them a unique label. Classification, on the other hand, is about recognising the species of the tree. The information of each individual tree in the forest increases the knowledge about the forest which can be useful for managements, biodiversity assessment, etc. Different algorithms for segmenting individual tree crowns are presented and also compared to each other in order to find their strengths and weaknesses. All segmentation algorithms developed in this thesis focus on preserving the shape of the tree crown. Regions, representing the segmented tree crowns, grow according to certain rules from seed points. One method starts from many regions for each tree crown and searches for the region that fits the tree crown best. The other methods start from a set of seed points, representing the locations of the tree crowns, to create the regions. The segmentation result varies from 73 to 95 % correctly segmented visual tree crowns depending on the type of forest and the method. The former value is for a naturally generated mixed forest and the latter for a non-mixed forest. The classification method presented uses shape information of the segments and colour information of the corresponding tree crown in order to decide the species. The classification method classifies 77 % of the visual trees correctly in a naturally generated mixed forest, but on a forest stand level the classification is over 90 %

    Is countershading camouflage robust to lighting change due to weather?

    Countershading is a pattern of coloration thought to have evolved in order to implement camouflage. By adopting a pattern of coloration that makes the surface facing towards the sun darker and the surface facing away from the sun lighter, the overall amount of light reflected off an animal can be made more uniformly bright. Countershading could hence contribute to visual camouflage by increasing background matching or reducing cues to shape. However, the usefulness of countershading is constrained by a particular pattern delivering ‘optimal’ camouflage only for very specific lighting conditions. In this study, we test the robustness of countershading camouflage to lighting change due to weather, using human participants as a ‘generic’ predator. In a simulated three-dimensional environment, we constructed an array of simple leaf-shaped items and a single ellipsoidal target ‘prey’. We set these items in two light environments: strongly directional ‘sunny’ and more diffuse ‘cloudy’. The target object was given the optimal pattern of countershading for one of these two environment types or displayed a uniform pattern. By measuring detection time and accuracy, we explored whether and how target detection depended on the match between the pattern of coloration on the target object and scene lighting. Detection times were longest when the countershading was appropriate to the illumination; incorrectly camouflaged targets were detected with a similar pattern of speed and accuracy to uniformly coloured targets. We conclude that structural changes in light environment, such as caused by differences in weather, do change the effectiveness of countershading camouflage

    Fine-graind Image Classification via Combining Vision and Language

    Fine-grained image classification is a challenging task due to the large intra-class variance and small inter-class variance, aiming at recognizing hundreds of sub-categories belonging to the same basic-level category. Most existing fine-grained image classification methods generally learn part detection models to obtain the semantic parts for better classification accuracy. Despite achieving promising results, these methods mainly have two limitations: (1) not all the parts which obtained through the part detection models are beneficial and indispensable for classification, and (2) fine-grained image classification requires more detailed visual descriptions which could not be provided by the part locations or attribute annotations. For addressing the above two limitations, this paper proposes the two-stream model combining vision and language (CVL) for learning latent semantic representations. The vision stream learns deep representations from the original visual information via deep convolutional neural network. The language stream utilizes the natural language descriptions which could point out the discriminative parts or characteristics for each image, and provides a flexible and compact way of encoding the salient visual aspects for distinguishing sub-categories. Since the two streams are complementary, combining the two streams can further achieves better classification accuracy. Comparing with 12 state-of-the-art methods on the widely used CUB-200-2011 dataset for fine-grained image classification, the experimental results demonstrate our CVL approach achieves the best performance.Comment: 9 pages, to appear in CVPR 201
