in the global telecommunication industry. Hence, a dominant approach for subscriber management and retention is churn control, since it is cheaper to retain an existing subscriber than acquiring a new one. Predictive modeling employs the use of data mining techniques to identify patterns and provide a result that a group of subscribers are likely to churn in the near future. However, the effectiveness of subscriber retention strategy in an organization can be further boosted if the reason for churn and the timing of churn can also be predicted. In this paper, we propose a data mining process framework that can be used to predict churn, determine when a subscriber is likely to churn, provides the reason why a subscriber may churn, and recommend appropriate intervention strategy for customer retention using a combination of statistical and machine learning techniques. This experiment is carried out using data from a major telecom operator in Nigeria

Knowledge Representation with Ontologies: The Present and Future

    No full text
Recently, we have seen an explosion of interest in ontologies as artifacts to represent human knowledge and as critical components in knowledge management, the semantic Web, business-to-business applications, and several other application areas. Various research communities commonly assume that ontologies are the appropriate modeling structure for representing knowledge. However, little discussion has occurred regarding the actual range of knowledge an ontology can successfully represent

Integrating CLIPS applications into heterogeneous distributed systems

SOCIAL is an advanced, object-oriented development tool for integrating intelligent and conventional applications across heterogeneous hardware and software platforms. SOCIAL defines a family of 'wrapper' objects called agents, which incorporate predefined capabilities for distributed communication and control. Developers embed applications within agents and establish interactions between distributed agents via non-intrusive message-based interfaces. This paper describes a predefined SOCIAL agent that is specialized for integrating C Language Integrated Production System (CLIPS)-based applications. The agent's high-level Application Programming Interface supports bidirectional flow of data, knowledge, and commands to other agents, enabling CLIPS applications to initiate interactions autonomously, and respond to requests and results from heterogeneous remote systems. The design and operation of CLIPS agents are illustrated with two distributed applications that integrate CLIPS-based expert systems with other intelligent systems for isolating and mapping problems in the Space Shuttle Launch Processing System at the NASA Kennedy Space Center

Action Stories for Counter Terrorism (extended abstract)

Due to the raised terrorist threat worldwide, there is an urgent need to research that assists security and police services to protect the public and key assets and to prevent attacks from taking place. Successful protection and prevention may require potential and known suspects to be monitored or arrested. These operations are high risk because inappropriate surveillance, interview or arrest may have damaging political, public relations and intelligence effects. In addition to better tracking information on which to base suspicions, the security and police services need to have confidence that operations will yield evidence that can demonstrate conclusively that a deceptive activity such as a terrorist attack was in the process of being planned or executed before an operation takes place
