An Exact Algorithm for TSP in Degree-3 Graphs via Circuit Procedure and Amortization on Connectivity Structure
The paper presents an O^*(1.2312^n)-time and polynomial-space algorithm for
the traveling salesman problem in an n-vertex graph with maximum degree 3. This
improves the previous time bounds of O^*(1.251^n) by Iwama and Nakashima and
O^*(1.260^n) by Eppstein. Our algorithm is a simple branch-and-search
algorithm. The only branch rule is designed on a cut-circuit structure of a
graph induced by unprocessed edges. To improve a time bound by a simple
analysis on measure and conquer, we introduce an amortization scheme over the
cut-circuit structure by defining the measure of an instance to be the sum of
not only weights of vertices but also weights of connected components of the

Fixed-Parameter Algorithms for Rectilinear Steiner tree and Rectilinear Traveling Salesman Problem in the plane
Given a set of points with their pairwise distances, the traveling
salesman problem (TSP) asks for a shortest tour that visits each point exactly
once. A TSP instance is rectilinear when the points lie in the plane and the
distance considered between two points is the distance. In this paper, a
fixed-parameter algorithm for the Rectilinear TSP is presented and relies on
techniques for solving TSP on bounded-treewidth graphs. It proves that the
problem can be solved in where denotes the
number of horizontal lines containing the points of . The same technique can
be directly applied to the problem of finding a shortest rectilinear Steiner
tree that interconnects the points of providing a
time complexity. Both bounds improve over the best time bounds known for these

A Solution Merging Heuristic for the Steiner Problem in Graphs Using Tree Decompositions
Fixed parameter tractable algorithms for bounded treewidth are known to exist
for a wide class of graph optimization problems. While most research in this
area has been focused on exact algorithms, it is hard to find decompositions of
treewidth sufficiently small to make these al- gorithms fast enough for
practical use. Consequently, tree decomposition based algorithms have limited
applicability to large scale optimization. However, by first reducing the input
graph so that a small width tree decomposition can be found, we can harness the
power of tree decomposi- tion based techniques in a heuristic algorithm, usable
on graphs of much larger treewidth than would be tractable to solve exactly. We
propose a solution merging heuristic to the Steiner Tree Problem that applies
this idea. Standard local search heuristics provide a natural way to generate
subgraphs with lower treewidth than the original instance, and subse- quently
we extract an improved solution by solving the instance induced by this
subgraph. As such the fixed parameter tractable algorithm be- comes an
efficient tool for our solution merging heuristic. For a large class of sparse
benchmark instances the algorithm is able to find small width tree
decompositions on the union of generated solutions. Subsequently it can often
improve on the generated solutions fast
Determinant Sums for Undirected Hamiltonicity
We present a Monte Carlo algorithm for Hamiltonicity detection in an
-vertex undirected graph running in time. To the best of
our knowledge, this is the first superpolynomial improvement on the worst case
runtime for the problem since the bound established for TSP almost
fifty years ago (Bellman 1962, Held and Karp 1962). It answers in part the
first open problem in Woeginger's 2003 survey on exact algorithms for NP-hard
problems.
For bipartite graphs, we improve the bound to time. Both the
bipartite and the general algorithm can be implemented to use space polynomial
in .
We combine several recently resurrected ideas to get the results. Our main
technical contribution is a new reduction inspired by the algebraic sieving
method for -Path (Koutis ICALP 2008, Williams IPL 2009). We introduce the
Labeled Cycle Cover Sum in which we are set to count weighted arc labeled cycle
covers over a finite field of characteristic two. We reduce Hamiltonicity to
Labeled Cycle Cover Sum and apply the determinant summation technique for Exact

Walking Through Waypoints
We initiate the study of a fundamental combinatorial problem: Given a
capacitated graph , find a shortest walk ("route") from a source to a destination that includes all vertices specified by a set
: the \emph{waypoints}. This waypoint routing problem
finds immediate applications in the context of modern networked distributed
systems. Our main contribution is an exact polynomial-time algorithm for graphs
of bounded treewidth. We also show that if the number of waypoints is
logarithmically bounded, exact polynomial-time algorithms exist even for
general graphs. Our two algorithms provide an almost complete characterization
of what can be solved exactly in polynomial-time: we show that more general
problems (e.g., on grid graphs of maximum degree 3, with slightly more
waypoints) are computationally intractable
Approximation Algorithms for Multi-Criteria Traveling Salesman Problems
In multi-criteria optimization problems, several objective functions have to
be optimized. Since the different objective functions are usually in conflict
with each other, one cannot consider only one particular solution as the
optimal solution. Instead, the aim is to compute a so-called Pareto curve of
solutions. Since Pareto curves cannot be computed efficiently in general, we
have to be content with approximations to them.
We design a deterministic polynomial-time algorithm for multi-criteria
g-metric STSP that computes (min{1 +g, 2g^2/(2g^2 -2g +1)} + eps)-approximate
Pareto curves for all 1/2<=g<=1. In particular, we obtain a
(2+eps)-approximation for multi-criteria metric STSP. We also present two
randomized approximation algorithms for multi-criteria g-metric STSP that
achieve approximation ratios of (2g^3 +2g^2)/(3g^2 -2g +1) + eps and (1 +g)/(1
+3g -4g^2) + eps, respectively.
Moreover, we present randomized approximation algorithms for multi-criteria
g-metric ATSP (ratio 1/2 + g^3/(1 -3g^2) + eps) for g < 1/sqrt(3)), STSP with
weights 1 and 2 (ratio 4/3) and ATSP with weights 1 and 2 (ratio 3/2). To do
this, we design randomized approximation schemes for multi-criteria cycle cover

Fine-Grained Complexity of k-OPT in Bounded-Degree Graphs for Solving TSP
The Traveling Salesman Problem asks to find a minimum-weight Hamiltonian cycle in an edge-weighted complete graph. Local search is a widely-employed strategy for finding good solutions to TSP. A popular neighborhood operator for local search is k-opt, which turns a Hamiltonian cycle C into a new Hamiltonian cycle C\u27 by replacing k edges. We analyze the problem of determining whether the weight of a given cycle can be decreased by a k-opt move. Earlier work has shown that (i) assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis, there is no algorithm that can detect whether or not a given Hamiltonian cycle C in an n-vertex input can be improved by a k-opt move in time f(k) n^o(k / log k) for any function f, while (ii) it is possible to improve on the brute-force running time of O(n^k) and save linear factors in the exponent. Modern TSP heuristics are very successful at identifying the most promising edges to be used in k-opt moves, and experiments show that very good global solutions can already be reached using only the top-O(1) most promising edges incident to each vertex. This leads to the following question: can improving k-opt moves be found efficiently in graphs of bounded degree? We answer this question in various regimes, presenting new algorithms and conditional lower bounds. We show that the aforementioned ETH lower bound also holds for graphs of maximum degree three, but that in bounded-degree graphs the best improving k-move can be found in time O(n^((23/135+epsilon_k)k)), where lim_{k -> infty} epsilon_k = 0. This improves upon the best-known bounds for general graphs. Due to its practical importance, we devote special attention to the range of k in which improving k-moves in bounded-degree graphs can be found in quasi-linear time. For k <= 7, we give quasi-linear time algorithms for general weights. For k=8 we obtain a quasi-linear time algorithm when the weights are bounded by O(polylog n). On the other hand, based on established fine-grained complexity hypotheses about the impossibility of detecting a triangle in edge-linear time, we prove that the k = 9 case does not admit quasi-linear time algorithms. Hence we fully characterize the values of k for which quasi-linear time algorithms exist for polylogarithmic weights on bounded-degree graphs
Solving a "Hard" Problem to Approximate an "Easy" One: Heuristics for Maximum Matchings and Maximum Traveling Salesman Problems
We consider geometric instances of the Maximum Weighted Matching Problem
(MWMP) and the Maximum Traveling Salesman Problem (MTSP) with up to 3,000,000
vertices. Making use of a geometric duality relationship between MWMP, MTSP,
and the Fermat-Weber-Problem (FWP), we develop a heuristic approach that yields
in near-linear time solutions as well as upper bounds. Using various
computational tools, we get solutions within considerably less than 1% of the
optimum.
An interesting feature of our approach is that, even though an FWP is hard to
compute in theory and Edmonds' algorithm for maximum weighted matching yields a
polynomial solution for the MWMP, the practical behavior is just the opposite,
and we can solve the FWP with high accuracy in order to find a good heuristic
