    Vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines

    A vectorial formalism for analysis and design of polyphase synchronous machines without reluctance and saturation effects is described. We prove the equivalence of such a machine with a set of magnetically independent machines, which are electrically and mechanically coupled. Specific problems of polyphase machines can thus be favorably analyzed with this concept. Rules of conception and constraints on electric supply can be deduced. Moreover the vectorial approach, which generalizes the complex phasor method, can also be used to control n-leg Voltage Source Inverters. This methodology is applied to 3-phase and 6- phase synchronous machines

    An adaptive disturbance rejection control scheme for voltage regulation in DC micro-grids

The disturbances being non-deterministic in nature, the voltage regulation control by the storage systems relies mostly on dual loop architecture with an outer voltage and inner current loop. Improvement in controller dynamics can be achieved through feed forward of disturbance profile but at expense of additional sensors and communication in the grid. This work explores the application of an adaptive disturbance rejection control scheme for disturbance estimation (without using additional sensors) employing an extended state and proportional integral observer (PI+ESO). The proposed observer aim to achieve robust disturbance estimation under grid parameter uncertainty. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme over the conventional one will be put forward through H8 and H2 norm analysis of the system.     A Systematic Control Design Method with Active Damping Control in Voltage Source Converters

    This paper proposes a systematic control design method for active damping control of grid-connected voltage source converters (VSCs). The proposed control method considers the conventional cascaded control loops and improves them by including additional states feedback-based active damping. In such a way, all control gains are lumped into one control gain matrix based on the proposed formulation. The lumping of all control gains into one matrix leads to a linear optimization problem, so different techniques can be used to calculate control gains. This work calculates them by using a simple but effective optimal control theorem as a noteworthy feature. The proposed control method can overcome the challenges of designing multiple control loops, evaluating wide time scale dynamics, and tuning required control parameters. Moreover, direct relationships between the proposed tuning parameters and system well-known stability and performance indicators such as maximum damping factor, minimum damping ratio, and the control efforts are identified, providing good physical insight. Finally, the proposed control structure and optimal gain calculations ensure power converter robustness against uncertainties in the grid’s short-circuit ratio (SCR) and different operating-point conditions. When the grid’s SCR changes from 10 (strong grid condition) to 1 (ultra-weak grid condition), the system under the proposed control method maintains good stability margins and simultaneously provides a fast dynamic response by facilitating the implementation of a high-bandwidth phase-locked loop (PLL).     Using Nyquist or Nyquist-Like Plot to Predict Three Typical Instabilities in DC-DC Converters

    By transforming an exact stability condition, a new Nyquist-like plot is proposed to predict occurrences of three typical instabilities in DC-DC converters. The three instabilities are saddle-node bifurcation (coexistence of multiple solutions), period-doubling bifurcation (subharmonic oscillation), and Neimark bifurcation (quasi-periodic oscillation). In a single plot, it accurately predicts whether an instability occurs and what type the instability is. The plot is equivalent to the Nyquist plot, and it is a useful design tool to avoid these instabilities. Nine examples are used to illustrate the accuracy of this new plot to predict instabilities in the buck or boost converter with fixed or variable switching frequency.Comment: Submitted to an IEEE journal in 201

    A DC-DC Multiport Converter Based Solid State Transformer Integrating Distributed Generation and Storage

    abstract: The development of a Solid State Transformer (SST) that incorporates a DC-DC multiport converter to integrate both photovoltaic (PV) power generation and battery energy storage is presented in this dissertation. The DC-DC stage is based on a quad-active-bridge (QAB) converter which not only provides isolation for the load, but also for the PV and storage. The AC-DC stage is implemented with a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) single phase rectifier. A unified gyrator-based average model is developed for a general multi-active-bridge (MAB) converter controlled through phase-shift modulation (PSM). Expressions to determine the power rating of the MAB ports are also derived. The developed gyrator-based average model is applied to the QAB converter for faster simulations of the proposed SST during the control design process as well for deriving the state-space representation of the plant. Both linear quadratic regulator (LQR) and single-input-single-output (SISO) types of controllers are designed for the DC-DC stage. A novel technique that complements the SISO controller by taking into account the cross-coupling characteristics of the QAB converter is also presented herein. Cascaded SISO controllers are designed for the AC-DC stage. The QAB demanded power is calculated at the QAB controls and then fed into the rectifier controls in order to minimize the effect of the interaction between the two SST stages. The dynamic performance of the designed control loops based on the proposed control strategies are verified through extensive simulation of the SST average and switching models. The experimental results presented herein show that the transient responses for each control strategy match those from the simulations results thus validating them.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Electrical Engineering 201

    Observer-Based State-Space Current Control for a Three-Phase Grid-Connected Converter Equipped With an LCL Filter

    This paper presents a state-space current control method for active damping of the resonance frequency of the LCL filter and setting the dominant dynamics of the converter current through direct pole placement. A state observer is used, whereupon additional sensors are not needed in comparison with the conventional L filter design. The relationship between the system delay and instability caused by the resonance phenomenon is considered. Nyquist diagrams are used to examine the parameter sensitivity of the proposed method.     Adaptive design of delta sigma modulators

    In this thesis, a genetic algorithm based on differential evolution (DE) is used to generate delta sigma modulator (DSM) noise transfer functions (NTFs). These NTFs outperform those generated by an iterative approach described by Schreier and implemented in the delsig Matlab toolbox. Several lowpass and bandpass DSMs, as well as DSM\u27s designed specifically for and very low intermediate frequency (VLIF) receivers are designed using the algorithm developed in this thesis and compared to designs made using the delsig toolbox. The NTFs designed using the DE algorithm always have a higher dynamic range and signal to noise ratio than those designed using the delsig toolbox

    Frequency-Adaptive Multi-Resonant LQG State-Feedback Current Controller for LCL-Filtered VSCs under Distorted Grid Voltages

    This paper combines the well-known linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control and frequency-adaptive resonators and presents a frequency-adaptive multiresonant LQG state-feedback current controller for LCLfiltered voltage-source converters connected to a distorted grid. The paper also provides a design guideline and procedure based on robust control criteria which, in combination with the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) technique, offers flexibility in the control structure and automatizes the design of the controller.
