This valley of perpetual dream : a close commentary on Shelley's The triumph of life : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English at Massey University

The Triumph of Life" is a cryptic final work for Shelley to leave to posterity. It is both unlike and yet like his previous work. It is unlike in that it addresses itself to the non-ideal, to a cruel and devastating present existence.¹ Perhaps only The Cenci approaches the same degree of disillusionment. It is like in that it displays that "tough-minded" Shelleyan scepticism that C. E. Pulos has elucidated so well.² C. E. Pulos, The Deep Truth: A Study of Shelley's Scepticism (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1954). The Shelley who wrote the final line of "Mont Blanc", who included the famous last speech of Demogorgon in Prometheus Unbound, is in this poem given full rein. The debate still rages as to whether he allows any idealism into "The Triumph of Life" at all. This closely structured poem, full of gripping images that remain with one long after the poem has been read, is Shelley at his best. In it, the poet who wrote the "Ode to the West Wind" brings his deep concern with the nature of life to fruition. The issues that emerge from an analysis of the text reflect this concern with the fundamentals of existence. For this reason, I believe it to be - despite its fragmentary nature - a great document on modern life. [From Foreword

Extension of Resistance Law by Approximated Function for Trajectory

    Get PDF
An attempt has been made to extend the approximated function beyond 914 m/sec. With the help of suitable functions to enable the trajectory computation of the projectile without using the retardation coefficients from 1940 Resistance Law Tables. The results obtained with these functions have been compared with those obtained from Primary and Secondary, Ballistic Functions and using associated values defined in Siacci's method

The white dwarf affair: Chandrasekhar, Eddington and the limiting mass.

    Get PDF
A thesis describing and analysing the controversy between Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Arthur Stanley Eddington over the limiting mass of white dwarf stars. The aim of the thesis is to discover why the controversy occurred and to analyse the reasons behind Eddington's rejection of relativistic degeneracy and the limiting mass. The ultimate reason behind Eddington's attack on relativistic degeneracy was found to be Eddington's severe objection to singularities which was apparent long before Chandrasekhar's discovery of the limiting mass and occurred in three separate areas of research undertaken by Eddington during this period: astrophysics, cosmology, general relativity and Dirac's relativistic equation of the electron which led to Eddington's fundamental theory. The thesis will focus on the problem of the limiting mass of white dwarfs between 1929 and 1935 but will use the problem to analyse Eddington's view of singularities within the three different research areas spanning two decades from 1916 to 1936. The Chandrasekhar-Eddington controversy is set within Eddington's earlier controversies with James Jeans and Edward Arthur Milne who together with Eddington founded theoretical astrophysics during the 1920s. The thesis will examine the problem of white dwarfs within the context of the earlier controversies on stellar structure. As well as the technical analysis of the controversy, the thesis will also analyse the social dynamics and interactions within the astronomical community and their impact on the controversies. The aim of this thesis is to create a more complete picture of the Chandrasekhar-Eddington controversy by analysing Eddington's arguments for rejecting relativistic degeneracy, the limiting mass of white dwarfs and singularities not just within the context of astrophysics, but also cosmology, general relativity and quantum mechanics and to provide some new explanations as to why Eddington opposed relativistic degeneracy

Software requirements: Guidance and control software development specification

    Get PDF
The software requirements for an implementation of Guidance and Control Software (GCS) are specified. The purpose of the GCS is to provide guidance and engine control to a planetary landing vehicle during its terminal descent onto a planetary surface and to communicate sensory information about that vehicle and its descent to some receiving device. The specification was developed using the structured analysis for real time system specification methodology by Hatley and Pirbhai and was based on a simulation program used to study the probability of success of the 1976 Viking Lander missions to Mars. Three versions of GCS are being generated for use in software error studies

Popper's views of theory formation compared with the development of post-relativistic cosmological models

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThis dissertation confronts contemporary physical cosmology with Karl Popper's standards of scientific method and theory construction. To the degree to which there are differences, an attempt is made to criticize the major cosmological models in the light of Popper's analysis and, in turn, to explore revisions necessitated in this analysis by the unique problems of cosmology. As background, the major facets of Popper's work are presented in detail: his falsifiability criterion for demarcating scientific theories from metaphysics, his hypothetico-deductive method, and his rejection of induction. Then the origins of general relativity and its competitors are analyzed both as explanatory background to modern cosmology and so as to reveal the history of certain problems pertinent to Popper's scheme: for instance, the use of arguments from simplicity, the ideas of the utility of analogy and models, and the relation of theory to reality. Finally, the great variety of evolutionary, fundamentalistic, and steady-state models available for study is explored in detail as to presupposition and methodology so that their distinctives are revealed and a basis for comparison with Popper's suggestions provided.
