    Natural Language Tutoring and the Novice Programmer

    For beginning programmers, inadequate problem solving and planning skills are among the most salient of their weaknesses. Novices, by definition, lack much of the tacit knowledge that underlies effective programming. This dissertation examines the efficacy of natural language tutoring (NLT) to foster acquisition of this tacit knowledge. Coached Program Planning (CPP) is proposed as a solution to the problem of teaching the tacit knowledge of programming. The general aim is to cultivate the development of such knowledge by eliciting and scaffolding the problem solving and planning activities that novices are known to underestimate or bypass altogether. ProPL (pro-PELL), a dialogue-based intelligent tutoring system based on CPP, is also described. In an evaluation, the primary findings were that students who received tutoring from ProPL seemed to exhibit an improved ability compose plans and displayed behaviors suggestive of thinking at greater levels of abstraction than students in a read-only control group. The major finding is that NLT appears to be effective in teaching program composition skills

    How to Create an Innovation Accelerator

    Too many policy failures are fundamentally failures of knowledge. This has become particularly apparent during the recent financial and economic crisis, which is questioning the validity of mainstream scholarly paradigms. We propose to pursue a multi-disciplinary approach and to establish new institutional settings which remove or reduce obstacles impeding efficient knowledge creation. We provided suggestions on (i) how to modernize and improve the academic publication system, and (ii) how to support scientific coordination, communication, and co-creation in large-scale multi-disciplinary projects.     Developing computer-based assessment as a tool to support enquiry led learning

    A thesis submitted to the University of Bedfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science (MSc) by ResearchThis research explores the possibility of developing Computer-based Assessment (CBA) as a tool to support enquiry-led learning. In this approach learners explore and unpack thoughts and ideas that help them to learn and solve problems. A critical feature of this is feedback and this research focussed on how to design and supply feedback in CBA. Two lines of research were sourced: Computer-assisted Assessment (CM) and Improving Formative Assessment (IFA). Specifically, performance data was collected, analysed and evaluated from the statistical results of 3 CSA tests (approximately 100 undergraduates per test) and from qualitative feedback, the dialogic question and answer responses of (approximately 30 learners x 100 responses) engaged on level 3 activity of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The outcome of the research is the development of Kilauea exemplar, a theoretical model of an enquiry led item type applied in a subject specific domain

    Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programmes, including the Bolsa Família programme, have been extensively studied over recent years. The books, working papers and articles that have been written on the subject, if placed on top of each other, would pile up very high indeed. What excuse do I have for spending my time writing this one and asking you to spend yours reading it? My excuse is twofold. The first excuse is that, in spite of the aforementioned pile of studies, much about the programme is still not common knowledge. In the different forums in which I have been I have seen that many elementary facts about Bolsa Família are still relatively unknown to audiences beyond (some) Brazilian policymakers and government officials. How did the programme come about? What exactly was the Lula government?s role in its creation? What impact has it had on poverty, inequality, education, health and labour supply? Did it have any significant political effects? What are its contradictions and possibilities for the future?
