    Investigation into Indexing XML Data Techniques

    The rapid development of XML technology improves the WWW, since the XML data has many advantages and has become a common technology for transferring data cross the internet. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate and study the XML indexing techniques in terms of their structures. The main goal of this investigation is to identify the main limitations of these techniques and any other open issues. Furthermore, this research considers most common XML indexing techniques and performs a comparison between them. Subsequently, this work makes an argument to find out these limitations. To conclude, the main problem of all the XML indexing techniques is the trade-off between the size and the efficiency of the indexes. So, all the indexes become large in order to perform well, and none of them is suitable for all users’ requirements. However, each one of these techniques has some advantages in somehow

    Non-hierarchical Structures: How to Model and Index Overlaps?

    Overlap is a common phenomenon seen when structural components of a digital object are neither disjoint nor nested inside each other. Overlapping components resist reduction to a structural hierarchy, and tree-based indexing and query processing techniques cannot be used for them. Our solution to this data modeling problem is TGSA (Tree-like Graph for Structural Annotations), a novel extension of the XML data model for non-hierarchical structures. We introduce an algorithm for constructing TGSA from annotated documents; the algorithm can efficiently process non-hierarchical structures and is associated with formal proofs, ensuring that transformation of the document to the data model is valid. To enable high performance query analysis in large data repositories, we further introduce an extension of XML pre-post indexing for non-hierarchical structures, which can process both reachability and overlapping relationships.Comment: The paper has been accepted at the Balisage 2014 conferenc

    Desirable properties for XML update mechanisms

    The adoption of XML as the default data interchange format and the standardisation of the XPath and XQuery languages has resulted in significant research in the development and implementation of XML databases capable of processing queries efficiently. The ever-increasing deployment of XML in industry and the real-world requirement to support efficient updates to XML documents has more recently prompted research in dynamic XML labelling schemes. In this paper, we provide an overview of the recent research in dynamic XML labelling schemes. Our motivation is to define a set of properties that represent a more holistic dynamic labelling scheme and present our findings through an evaluation matrix for most of the existing schemes that provide update functionality

    Classification of index partitions to boost XML query performance

    XML query optimization continues to occupy considerable research effort due to the increasing usage of XML data. Despite many innovations over recent years, XML databases struggle to compete with more traditional database systems. Rather than using node indexes, some efforts have begun to focus on creating partitions of nodes within indexes. The motivation is to quickly eliminate large sections of the XML tree based on the partition they occupy. In this research, we present one such partition index that is unlike current approaches in how it determines size and number of these partitions. Furthermore, we provide a process for compacting the index and reducing the number of node access operations in order to optimize XML queries

    Open Access Metadata for Journals in Directory of Open Access Journals: Who, How, and What Scheme?

    Open access (OA) is a form of publication that allows some level of free access to scholarly publications. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a repository to which OA journals may apply and upload content to increase discoverability. OA also refers to metadata that is freely available for harvesting. In making metadata open access, standards for schemes and protocols are needed to facilitate interoperability. For open access journals, such as those listed in the DOAJ, providing open access metadata in a form that promotes interoperability is essential for discoverability of their content. This paper investigates what standards exist or are emerging, who within journals is creating the metadata for DOAJ journals, and how are those journals and DOAJ sharing the metadata for articles. Moreover, since creating metadata requires specialized knowledge of both librarians and programmers, it is imperative that journals wanting to publish with OA metadata formulate plans to coordinate these experts and to be sure their efforts are compatible with current standards and protocols

    Pattern based processing of XPath queries

    As the popularity of areas including document storage and distributed systems continues to grow, the demand for high performance XML databases is increasingly evident. This has led to a number of research eorts aimed at exploiting the maturity of relational database systems in order to in- crease XML query performance. In our approach, we use an index structure based on a metamodel for XML databases combined with relational database technology to facilitate fast access to XML document elements. The query process involves transforming XPath expressions to SQL which can be executed over our optimised query engine. As there are many dierent types of XPath queries, varying processing logic may be applied to boost performance not only to indi- vidual XPath axes, but across multiple axes simultaneously.     Terminology server for improved resource discovery: analysis of model and functions

    This paper considers the potential to improve distributed information retrieval via a terminologies server. The restriction upon effective resource discovery caused by the use of disparate terminologies across services and collections is outlined, before considering a DDC spine based approach involving inter-scheme mapping as a possible solution. The developing HILT model is discussed alongside other existing models and alternative approaches to solving the terminologies problem. Results from the current HILT pilot are presented to illustrate functionality and suggestions are made for further research and development

    This paper presents the DIGMAP geo-temporal Web gazetteer service, a system providing access to names of places, historical periods, and associated geo-temporal information. Within the DIGMAP project, this gazetteer serves as the unified repository of geographic and temporal information, assisting in the recognition and disambiguation of geo-temporal expressions over text, as well as in resource searching and indexing. We describe the data integration methodology, the handling of temporal information and some of the applications that use the gazetteer. Initial evaluation results show that the proposed system can adequately support several tasks related to geo-temporal information extraction and retrieval
