Proceedings of the Joint Automated Reasoning Workshop and Deduktionstreffen: As part of the Vienna Summer of Logic – IJCAR 23-24 July 2014
Preface
For many years the British and the German automated reasoning communities have successfully run independent series of workshops for anybody working in the area of automated reasoning. Although open to the general
public they addressed in the past primarily the British and the German communities, respectively. At the occasion of the Vienna Summer of Logic the two series have a joint event in Vienna as an IJCAR workshop. In the spirit of the two series there will be only informal proceedings with abstracts of the works presented. These are collected in this document. We have tried to maintain the informal open atmosphere of the two series and have welcomed in particular research students to present their work. We have solicited for all work related to automated reasoning and its applications with a particular interest in work-in-progress and the presentation of half-baked ideas.
As in the previous years, we have aimed to bring together researchers from all areas of automated reasoning in order to foster links among researchers from various disciplines; among theoreticians, implementers and users alike, and among international communities, this year not just the British and German communities
Truth maintenance in knowledge-based systems
Truth Maintenance Systems (TMS) have been applied in a wide range of domains, from diagnosing electric circuits to belief revision in agent systems. There also has been work on using the TMS in modern Knowledge-Based Systems such as intelligent agents and ontologies. This thesis investigates the applications of TMSs in such systems.
For intelligent agents, we use a “light-weight” TMS to support query caching in agent programs. The TMS keeps track of the dependencies between a query and the facts used to derive it so that when the agent updates its database, only affected queries are invalidated and removed from the cache. The TMS employed here is “light-weight” as it does not maintain all intermediate reasoning results. Therefore, it is able to reduce memory consumption and to improve performance in a dynamic setting such as in multi-agent systems.
For ontologies, this work extends the Assumption-based Truth Maintenance System (ATMS) to tackle the problem of axiom pinpointing and debugging in ontology-based systems with different levels of expressivity. Starting with finding all errors in auto-generated ontology mappings using a “classic” ATMS [23], we extend the ATMS to solve the axiom pinpointing problem in Description Logics-based Ontologies. We also attempt this approach to solve the axiom pinpointing problem in a more expressive upper ontology, SUMO, whose underlying logic is undecidable
Automated Deduction – CADE 28
This open access book constitutes the proceeding of the 28th International Conference on Automated Deduction, CADE 28, held virtually in July 2021. The 29 full papers and 7 system descriptions presented together with 2 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 76 submissions. CADE is the major forum for the presentation of research in all aspects of automated deduction, including foundations, applications, implementations, and practical experience. The papers are organized in the following topics: Logical foundations; theory and principles; implementation and application; ATP and AI; and system descriptions
Fundamental Approaches to Software Engineering
This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Fundamental Approaches to Software Engineering, FASE 2020, which took place in Dublin, Ireland, in April 2020, and was held as Part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2020. The 23 full papers, 1 tool paper and 6 testing competition papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 81 submissions. The papers cover topics such as requirements engineering, software architectures, specification, software quality, validation, verification of functional and non-functional properties, model-driven development and model transformation, software processes, security and software evolution
Multi-Agent Systems
A multi-agent system (MAS) is a system composed of multiple interacting intelligent agents. Multi-agent systems can be used to solve problems which are difficult or impossible for an individual agent or monolithic system to solve. Agent systems are open and extensible systems that allow for the deployment of autonomous and proactive software components. Multi-agent systems have been brought up and used in several application domains
Dwelling on ontology - semantic reasoning over topographic maps
The thesis builds upon the hypothesis that the spatial arrangement of topographic
features, such as buildings, roads and other land cover parcels, indicates how land is
used. The aim is to make this kind of high-level semantic information explicit within
topographic data. There is an increasing need to share and use data for a wider range of
purposes, and to make data more definitive, intelligent and accessible. Unfortunately,
we still encounter a gap between low-level data representations and high-level concepts
that typify human qualitative spatial reasoning. The thesis adopts an ontological
approach to bridge this gap and to derive functional information by using standard
reasoning mechanisms offered by logic-based knowledge representation formalisms. It
formulates a framework for the processes involved in interpreting land use information
from topographic maps. Land use is a high-level abstract concept, but it is also an
observable fact intimately tied to geography. By decomposing this relationship, the
thesis correlates a one-to-one mapping between high-level conceptualisations
established from human knowledge and real world entities represented in the data.
Based on a middle-out approach, it develops a conceptual model that incrementally
links different levels of detail, and thereby derives coarser, more meaningful
descriptions from more detailed ones. The thesis verifies its proposed ideas by
implementing an ontology describing the land use ‘residential area’ in the ontology
editor Protégé. By asserting knowledge about high-level concepts such as types of
dwellings, urban blocks and residential districts as well as individuals that link directly
to topographic features stored in the database, the reasoner successfully infers instances
of the defined classes. Despite current technological limitations, ontologies are a
promising way forward in the manner we handle and integrate geographic data,
especially with respect to how humans conceptualise geographic space
