Automatic assessment of creativity in heuristic problem-solving based on query diversity
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.Research, development and innovation are the pillars on which companies rely to offer new products and services capable of attracting consumer demand. This is why creative problem-solving emerges as one of the most relevant skills of the 21st century. Fortunately, there are many creativity training programs that have proven effective. However, many of these programs and methods base on a previous measurement of creativity and require experienced reviewers, they consume time for being manual, and they are far from everyday activities. In this study, we propose a model to estimate the creative quality of users' solutions dealing with heuristic problems, based on the automatic analysis of query patterns issued during the information search to solve the problem. This model has been able to predict the creative quality of solutions produced by 226 users, reaching a sensitivity of 78.43%. Likewise, the level of agreement among reviewers in relation to the creative characteristics is evaluated through two rubrics, and thereby, observing the difficulties of the manual evaluation: subjectivity and effort. Automatically Leveraging MapReduce Frameworks for Data-Intensive Applications
MapReduce is a popular programming paradigm for developing large-scale,
data-intensive computation. Many frameworks that implement this paradigm have
recently been developed. To leverage these frameworks, however, developers must
become familiar with their APIs and rewrite existing code. Casper is a new tool
that automatically translates sequential Java programs into the MapReduce
paradigm. Casper identifies potential code fragments to rewrite and translates
them in two steps: (1) Casper uses program synthesis to search for a program
summary (i.e., a functional specification) of each code fragment. The summary
is expressed using a high-level intermediate language resembling the MapReduce
paradigm and verified to be semantically equivalent to the original using a
theorem prover. (2) Casper generates executable code from the summary, using
either the Hadoop, Spark, or Flink API. We evaluated Casper by automatically
converting real-world, sequential Java benchmarks to MapReduce. The resulting

From Frequency to Meaning: Vector Space Models of Semantics
Computers understand very little of the meaning of human language. This
profoundly limits our ability to give instructions to computers, the ability of
computers to explain their actions to us, and the ability of computers to
analyse and process text. Vector space models (VSMs) of semantics are beginning
to address these limits. This paper surveys the use of VSMs for semantic
processing of text. We organize the literature on VSMs according to the
structure of the matrix in a VSM. There are currently three broad classes of
VSMs, based on term-document, word-context, and pair-pattern matrices, yielding
three classes of applications. We survey a broad range of applications in these
three categories and we take a detailed look at a specific open source project
in each category. Our goal in this survey is to show the breadth of
applications of VSMs for semantics, to provide a new perspective on VSMs for
those who are already familiar with the area, and to provide pointers into the
literature for those who are less familiar with the field
Thesaurus-assisted search term selection and query expansion: a review of user-centred studies
This paper provides a review of the literature related to the application of domain-specific thesauri in the search and retrieval process. Focusing on studies which adopt a user-centred approach, the review presents a survey of the methodologies and results from empirical studies undertaken on the use of thesauri as sources of term selection for query formulation and expansion during the search process. It summaries the ways in which domain-specific thesauri from different disciplines have been used by various types of users and how these tools aid users in the selection of search terms. The review consists of two main sections covering, firstly studies on thesaurus-aided search term selection and secondly those dealing with query expansion using thesauri. Both sections are illustrated with case studies that have adopted a user-centred approach
Reply With: Proactive Recommendation of Email Attachments
Email responses often contain items-such as a file or a hyperlink to an
external document-that are attached to or included inline in the body of the
message. Analysis of an enterprise email corpus reveals that 35% of the time
when users include these items as part of their response, the attachable item
is already present in their inbox or sent folder. A modern email client can
proactively retrieve relevant attachable items from the user's past emails
based on the context of the current conversation, and recommend them for
inclusion, to reduce the time and effort involved in composing the response. In
this paper, we propose a weakly supervised learning framework for recommending
attachable items to the user. As email search systems are commonly available,
we constrain the recommendation task to formulating effective search queries
from the context of the conversations. The query is submitted to an existing IR
system to retrieve relevant items for attachment. We also present a novel
strategy for generating labels from an email corpus---without the need for
manual annotations---that can be used to train and evaluate the query
formulation model. In addition, we describe a deep convolutional neural network
that demonstrates satisfactory performance on this query formulation task when
evaluated on the publicly available Avocado dataset and a proprietary dataset

The navigation system of the JPL robot
The control structure of the JPL research robot and the operations of the navigation subsystem are discussed. The robot functions as a network of interacting concurrent processes distributed among several computers and coordinated by a central executive. The results of scene analysis are used to create a segmented terrain model in which surface regions are classified by traversibility. The model is used by a path planning algorithm, PATH, which uses tree search methods to find the optimal path to a goal. In PATH, the search space is defined dynamically as a consequence of node testing. Maze-solving and the use of an associative data base for context dependent node generation are also discussed. Execution of a planned path is accomplished by a feedback guidance process with automatic error recovery
Genetic Sequence Matching Using D4M Big Data Approaches
Recent technological advances in Next Generation Sequencing tools have led to
increasing speeds of DNA sample collection, preparation, and sequencing. One
instrument can produce over 600 Gb of genetic sequence data in a single run.
This creates new opportunities to efficiently handle the increasing workload.
We propose a new method of fast genetic sequence analysis using the Dynamic
Distributed Dimensional Data Model (D4M) - an associative array environment for
MATLAB developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. Based on mathematical and
statistical properties, the method leverages big data techniques and the
implementation of an Apache Acculumo database to accelerate computations
one-hundred fold over other methods. Comparisons of the D4M method with the
current gold-standard for sequence analysis, BLAST, show the two are comparable
in the alignments they find. This paper will present an overview of the D4M
