    The Information Warefare Advisor: An Architecture for Interacting with Intelligent Agents Across the Web

    The global spread of digital communications and automated information systems, and the ever widening dependence on these systems for critical economic, political and military needs, has made the protection of these systems, as well as the ability to attack an enemy’s systems, an important part of military strategy and tactics. Information warfare (IW) has grown into a military specialty which seeks to use information and information systems to gain military advantages over an opponent. The US Army War College has several IW experts on its faculty, but during its annual Strategic Crisis Exercise (SCE) these experts are generally not available to assist students with questions on IW background or response planning since they have other duties during the exercise. In order to make the expertise of its faculty available to all students during each SCE, as well as preserve and expand this expertise as faculty come and go, a research project was established between the War College’s Knowledge Engineering Branch and George Washington University to design and demonstrate an architecture for an on-line expert advisor in Information Warfare. The objective of the IW Advisor was to provide any SCE student or War College faculty member the ability to access the captured knowledge and expertise of IW experts through the college’s private intranet using standard off-the- shelf web browser technology

    Multi-agent systems for power engineering applications - part 1 : Concepts, approaches and technical challenges

    This is the first part of a 2-part paper that has arisen from the work of the IEEE Power Engineering Society's Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) Working Group. Part 1 of the paper examines the potential value of MAS technology to the power industry. In terms of contribution, it describes fundamental concepts and approaches within the field of multi-agent systems that are appropriate to power engineering applications. As well as presenting a comprehensive review of the meaningful power engineering applications for which MAS are being investigated, it also defines the technical issues which must be addressed in order to accelerate and facilitate the uptake of the technology within the power and energy sector. Part 2 of the paper explores the decisions inherent in engineering multi-agent systems for applications in the power and energy sector and offers guidance and recommendations on how MAS can be designed and implemented

    Mathematical Approaches in Studying the Ideal Image of the Goal

    The article outlines the possible approaches in the mathematical computations of integrated behavioral units in functional systems supporting homeostasis through in behavioral changes. By an imbalance in the homeostasis system which initiates adaptive behavior we assume: for metabolism – a departure of the parameters from the “normal zone” to the level of a suprathreshold sensitivity of the receptors; for structures of the psychological and social spectra – to the “cognized-not cognized”, “acceptable-not acceptable” levels. For the system analysis of goal-directed behavior dynamics, we present a combination of the “creation – retention” of the ideal image of the goal and the entire effector structure of the integrated behavioral unit by introducing an integrating term, motivational gradient. The integrated Behavioral Unit (BU) is described as a psychophysiological metamer in behavioral continuum, including a mathematical description of the BU as a whole including its elements viz., the ideal image of the goal and the motivational gradient. The hemodynamic equivalent of the motivational gradient (the scalar gradient) and subjective time (the time marker) are used as the BU markers. For the mathematical description, we use the mathematical apparatus of topological spaces and elements of the string theory to open up opportunities for new approaches in psychology and neurobiology

    The transformation of energy networks from passive to active systems requires the embedding of intelligence within the network. One suitable approach to integrating distributed intelligent systems is multi-agent systems technology, where components of functionality run as autonomous agents capable of interaction through messaging. This provides loose coupling between components that can benefit the complex systems envisioned for the smart grid. This paper reviews the key milestones of demonstrated agent systems in the power industry and considers which aspects of agent design must still be addressed for widespread application of agent technology to occur

    Enhancing the Supply Chain Performance by Integrating Simulated and Physical Agents into Organizational Information Systems

    As the business environment gets more complicated, organizations must be able to respond to the business changes and adjust themselves quickly to gain their competitive advantages. This study proposes an integrated agent system, called SPA, which coordinates simulated and physical agents to provide an efficient way for organizations to meet the challenges in managing supply chains. In the integrated framework, physical agents coordinate with inter-organizations\' physical agents to form workable business processes and detect the variations occurring in the outside world, whereas simulated agents model and analyze the what-if scenarios to support physical agents in making decisions. This study uses a supply chain that produces digital still cameras as an example to demonstrate how the SPA works. In this example, individual information systems of the involved companies equip with the SPA and the entire supply chain is modeled as a hierarchical object oriented Petri nets. The SPA here applies the modified AGNES data clustering technique and the moving average approach to help each firm generalize customers\' past demand patterns and forecast their future demands. The amplitude of forecasting errors caused by bullwhip effects is used as a metric to evaluate the degree that the SPA affects the supply chain performance. The experimental results show that the SPA benefits the entire supply chain by reducing the bullwhip effects and forecasting errors in a dynamic environment.Supply Chain Performance Enhancement; Bullwhip Effects; Simulated Agents; Physical Agents; Dynamic Customer Demand Pattern Discovery
