Low-Complexity Quantized Switching Controllers using Approximate Bisimulation
In this paper, we consider the problem of synthesizing low-complexity
controllers for incrementally stable switched systems. For that purpose, we
establish a new approximation result for the computation of symbolic models
that are approximately bisimilar to a given switched system. The main advantage
over existing results is that it allows us to design naturally quantized
switching controllers for safety or reachability specifications; these can be
pre-computed offline and therefore the online execution time is reduced. Then,
we present a technique to reduce the memory needed to store the control law by
borrowing ideas from algebraic decision diagrams for compact function
representation and by exploiting the non-determinism of the synthesized
controllers. We show the merits of our approach by applying it to a simple
model of temperature regulation in a building
On Verifying Complex Properties using Symbolic Shape Analysis
One of the main challenges in the verification of software systems is the
analysis of unbounded data structures with dynamic memory allocation, such as
linked data structures and arrays. We describe Bohne, a new analysis for
verifying data structures. Bohne verifies data structure operations and shows
that 1) the operations preserve data structure invariants and 2) the operations
satisfy their specifications expressed in terms of changes to the set of
objects stored in the data structure. During the analysis, Bohne infers loop
invariants in the form of disjunctions of universally quantified Boolean
combinations of formulas. To synthesize loop invariants of this form, Bohne
uses a combination of decision procedures for Monadic Second-Order Logic over
trees, SMT-LIB decision procedures (currently CVC Lite), and an automated
reasoner within the Isabelle interactive theorem prover. This architecture
shows that synthesized loop invariants can serve as a useful communication
mechanism between different decision procedures. Using Bohne, we have verified
operations on data structures such as linked lists with iterators and back
pointers, trees with and without parent pointers, two-level skip lists, array
data structures, and sorted lists. We have deployed Bohne in the Hob and Jahob
data structure analysis systems, enabling us to combine Bohne with analyses of
data structure clients and apply it in the context of larger programs. This
report describes the Bohne algorithm as well as techniques that Bohne uses to
reduce the ammount of annotations and the running time of the analysis
Coordinated Robot Navigation via Hierarchical Clustering
We introduce the use of hierarchical clustering for relaxed, deterministic
coordination and control of multiple robots. Traditionally an unsupervised
learning method, hierarchical clustering offers a formalism for identifying and
representing spatially cohesive and segregated robot groups at different
resolutions by relating the continuous space of configurations to the
combinatorial space of trees. We formalize and exploit this relation,
developing computationally effective reactive algorithms for navigating through
the combinatorial space in concert with geometric realizations for a particular
choice of hierarchical clustering method. These constructions yield
computationally effective vector field planners for both hierarchically
invariant as well as transitional navigation in the configuration space. We
apply these methods to the centralized coordination and control of
perfectly sensed and actuated Euclidean spheres in a -dimensional ambient
space (for arbitrary and ). Given a desired configuration supporting a
desired hierarchy, we construct a hybrid controller which is quadratic in
and algebraic in and prove that its execution brings all but a measure zero
set of initial configurations to the desired goal with the guarantee of no

In defense of compilation: A response to Davis' form and content in model-based reasoning
In a recent paper entitled 'Form and Content in Model Based Reasoning', Randy Davis argues that model based reasoning research aimed at compiling task specific rules from underlying device models is mislabeled, misguided, and diversionary. Some of Davis' claims are examined and his basic conclusions are challenged about the value of compilation research to the model based reasoning community. In particular, Davis' claim is refuted that model based reasoning is exempt from the efficiency benefits provided by knowledge compilation techniques. In addition, several misconceptions are clarified about the role of representational form in compilation. It is concluded that techniques have the potential to make a substantial contribution to solving tractability problems in model based reasoning
Learning ontology aware classifiers
Many applications of data-driven knowledge discovery processes call for the exploration of data from multiple points of view that reflect different ontological commitments on the part of the learner. Of particular interest in this context are algorithms for learning classifiers from ontologies and data. Against this background, my dissertation research is aimed at the design and analysis of algorithms for construction of robust, compact, accurate and ontology aware classifiers. We have precisely formulated the problem of learning pattern classifiers from attribute value taxonomies (AVT) and partially specified data. We have designed and implemented efficient and theoretically well-founded AVT-based classifier learners. Based on a general strategy of hypothesis refinement to search in a generalized hypothesis space, our AVT-guided learning algorithm adopts a general learning framework that takes into account the tradeoff between the complexity and the accuracy of the predictive models, which enables us to learn a classifier that is both compact and accurate. We have also extended our approach to learning compact and accurate classifier from semantically heterogeneous data sources. We presented a principled way to reduce the problem of learning from semantically heterogeneous data to the problem of learning from distributed partially specified data by reconciling semantic heterogeneity using AVT mappings, and we described a sufficient statistics based solution
Clear Visual Separation of Temporal Event Sequences
Extracting and visualizing informative insights from temporal event sequences
becomes increasingly difficult when data volume and variety increase. Besides
dealing with high event type cardinality and many distinct sequences, it can be
difficult to tell whether it is appropriate to combine multiple events into one
or utilize additional information about event attributes. Existing approaches
often make use of frequent sequential patterns extracted from the dataset,
however, these patterns are limited in terms of interpretability and utility.
In addition, it is difficult to assess the role of absolute and relative time
when using pattern mining techniques.
In this paper, we present methods that addresses these challenges by
automatically learning composite events which enables better aggregation of
multiple event sequences. By leveraging event sequence outcomes, we present
appropriate linked visualizations that allow domain experts to identify
critical flows, to assess validity and to understand the role of time.
Furthermore, we explore information gain and visual complexity metrics to
identify the most relevant visual patterns. We compare composite event learning
with two approaches for extracting event patterns using real world company
