Tool flow management in batch manufacturing systems for cylindrical components
The objective of the research is to study the design of and operating strategies
for advanced tool flow systems in highly automated turning systems. A prototype
workstation has been built to aid this process. The thesis consists of three main
parts. In the first part the current flexible manufacturing technology is reviewed
with emphasis laid on tool flow and production scheduling problems. The
'State-of-the-Art' turning systems are studied, to highlight the requirement of the
computer modelling of tool flow systems.
In the second part, the design of a computer model using fast modelling
algorithms is reported. The model design has concentrated on the tool flow system performance forecasting and improving. Attention has been given to the full
representation of highly automatic features evident in turning systems.
A number of contemporary production scheduling rules have been
incorporated into the computer model structure, with the objectives of providing a
frontend to the tool flow model, and to examine the tool flow problems
interactively with the production scheduling rules.
The user-interface of the model employs conversational type screens for tool
flow network specification and data handling, which enhances its user friendliness
greatly. An effective, fast, and easy to handle data base management system for
tool, part, machine data entries has been· built up to facilitate the model
performance.
The third part of the thesis is concerned with the validation and application of
the model with industry supplied data to examine system performance, and to
evaluate alternative strategies. Conclusions drawn from this research and the
recommendations for further work are finally indicated
MORPH: A Reference Architecture for Configuration and Behaviour Self-Adaptation
An architectural approach to self-adaptive systems involves runtime change of
system configuration (i.e., the system's components, their bindings and
operational parameters) and behaviour update (i.e., component orchestration).
Thus, dynamic reconfiguration and discrete event control theory are at the
heart of architectural adaptation. Although controlling configuration and
behaviour at runtime has been discussed and applied to architectural
adaptation, architectures for self-adaptive systems often compound these two
aspects reducing the potential for adaptability. In this paper we propose a
reference architecture that allows for coordinated yet transparent and
independent adaptation of system configuration and behaviour
A document management methodology based on similarity contents
The advent of the WWW and distributed information systems have made it possible to share documents between different users and organisations. However, this has created many problems related to the security, accessibility, right and most importantly the consistency of documents. It is important that the people involved in the documents management process have access to the most up-to-date version of documents, retrieve the correct documents and should be able to update the documents repository in such a way that his or her document are known to others. In this paper we propose a method for organising, storing and retrieving documents based on similarity contents. The method uses techniques based on information retrieval, document indexation and term extraction and indexing. This methodology is developed for the E-Cognos project which aims at developing tools for the management and sharing of documents in the construction domain
Creating Responsive Information Systems with the Help of SSADM
In this paper, a program for a research is outlined. Firstly, the concept of responsive information systems is defined and then the notion of the capacity planning and software performance engineering is clarified. Secondly, the purpose of the proposed methodology of capacity planning, the interface to information systems analysis and development methodologies (SSADM), the advantage of knowledge-based approach is discussed. The interfaces to CASE tools more precisely to data dictionaries or repositories (IRDS) are examined in the context of a certain systems analysis and design methodology (e.g. SSADM)

Learning from AI : new trends in database technology
Recently some researchers in the areas of database data modelling and knowledge representations in artificial intelligence have recognized that they share many common goals. In this survey paper we show the relationship between database and artificial intelligence research. We show that there has been a tendency for data models to incorporate more modelling techniques developed for knowledge representations in artificial intelligence as the desire to incorporate more application oriented semantics, user friendliness, and flexibility has increased.
