An FPGA Implementation of Kak's Instantaneously-Trained, Fast-Classification Neural Networks
Motivated by a biologically plausible short-memory sketchpad, Kak's Fast Classification (FC) neural networks are instantaneously trained by using a prescriptive training scheme. Both weights and the topology for an FC network are specified with only two presentations of the training samples. Compared with iterative learning algorithms such as Backpropagation (which may require many thousands of presentations of the training data), the training of FC networks is extremely fast and learning convergence is always guaranteed. Thus FC networks are suitable for applications where real-time classification and adaptive filtering are needed. In this paper we show that FC networks are "hardware friendly" for implementation on FPGAs. Their unique prescriptive learning scheme can be integrated with the hardware design of the FC network through parameterization and compile-time constant folding
A Deep Evolutionary Approach to Bioinspired Classifier Optimisation for Brain-Machine Interaction
This study suggests a new approach to EEG data classification by exploring the idea of using evolutionary computation to both select useful discriminative EEG features and optimise the topology of Artificial Neural Networks. An evolutionary algorithm is applied to select the most informative features from an initial set of 2550 EEG statistical features. Optimisation of a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) is performed with an evolutionary approach before classification to estimate the best hyperparameters of the network. Deep learning and tuning with Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) are also explored, and Adaptive Boosting of the two types of models is tested for each problem. Three experiments are provided for comparison using different classifiers: One for attention state classification, one for emotional sentiment classification, and a third experiment in which the goal is to guess the number a subject is thinking of. The obtained results show that an Adaptive Boosted LSTM can achieve an accuracy of 84.44%, 97.06%, and 9.94% on the attentional, emotional, and number datasets, respectively. An evolutionary-optimised MLP achieves results close to the Adaptive Boosted LSTM for the two first experiments and significantly higher for the number-guessing experiment with an Adaptive Boosted DEvo MLP reaching 31.35%, while being significantly quicker to train and classify. In particular, the accuracy of the nonboosted DEvo MLP was of 79.81%, 96.11%, and 27.07% in the same benchmarks. Two datasets for the experiments were gathered using a Muse EEG headband with four electrodes corresponding to TP9, AF7, AF8, and TP10 locations of the international EEG placement standard. The EEG MindBigData digits dataset was gathered from the TP9, FP1, FP2, and TP10 locations
An agent-driven semantical identifier using radial basis neural networks and reinforcement learning
Due to the huge availability of documents in digital form, and the deception
possibility raise bound to the essence of digital documents and the way they
are spread, the authorship attribution problem has constantly increased its
relevance. Nowadays, authorship attribution, for both information retrieval and
analysis, has gained great importance in the context of security, trust and
copyright preservation. This work proposes an innovative multi-agent driven
machine learning technique that has been developed for authorship attribution.
By means of a preprocessing for word-grouping and time-period related analysis
of the common lexicon, we determine a bias reference level for the recurrence
frequency of the words within analysed texts, and then train a Radial Basis
Neural Networks (RBPNN)-based classifier to identify the correct author. The
main advantage of the proposed approach lies in the generality of the semantic
analysis, which can be applied to different contexts and lexical domains,
without requiring any modification. Moreover, the proposed system is able to
incorporate an external input, meant to tune the classifier, and then
self-adjust by means of continuous learning reinforcement.Comment: Published on: Proceedings of the XV Workshop "Dagli Oggetti agli

Link-based formalism for time evolution of adaptive networks
Network topology and nodal dynamics are two fundamental stones of adaptive
networks. Detailed and accurate knowledge of these two ingredients is crucial
for understanding the evolution and mechanism of adaptive networks. In this
paper, by adopting the framework of the adaptive SIS model proposed by Gross et
al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 208701 (2006)] and carefully utilizing the
information of degree correlation of the network, we propose a link-based
formalism for describing the system dynamics with high accuracy and subtle
details. Several specific degree correlation measures are introduced to reveal
the coevolution of network topology and system dynamics.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure
WPU-Net: Boundary Learning by Using Weighted Propagation in Convolution Network
Deep learning has driven a great progress in natural and biological image
processing. However, in material science and engineering, there are often some
flaws and indistinctions in material microscopic images induced from complex
sample preparation, even due to the material itself, hindering the detection of
target objects. In this work, we propose WPU-net that redesigns the
architecture and weighted loss of U-Net, which forces the network to integrate
information from adjacent slices and pays more attention to the topology in
boundary detection task. Then, the WPU-net is applied into a typical material
example, i.e., the grain boundary detection of polycrystalline material.
Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves promising performance
and outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Besides, we propose a new method for
object tracking between adjacent slices, which can effectively reconstruct 3D
structure of the whole material. Finally, we present a material microscopic
image dataset with the goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in image
processing for material science.Comment: technical repor
